And I managed to get the sticky stuff off..
you know, the adhisive for the thermal wrap on the HDD.
I'm currently "attempting" (being the operative word here) to ghost (or rather Acronis, after the much praise this forum has given it) my stock 40GB HDD to my recently aquired 320GB WD Scorpio.
So myself being a inept muppet as of late, I can't even seem to get the 40GB to plug into my desktop for the sync.
I picked up a 2.5" ATA to IDE (for a better idea pictures say a mouthful http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ers+and+gender+changers-_-Rosewill-_-12119245 ) the one I'm using already has the one pin out so no issue with bending the wrong one as the link may suggest.
So I poped out the IDE cable & power to my dvd drive (secondary on the same cable as my primary drive) as I only have the one IDE and all the rest of my desktop is running SATA.
Double checked the power and the adaptor was plugged in to both ends correctly, and I checked over the stock CF-18 HDD for any possible master/salve switchs didn't find any)
Booted 'er up and ....nothing, quick jump into the bios see's that nothing new aside from the dvd is disconnected, but now it won't boot into the OS.
Tried twice, same results, then for ____ & giggles, threw in the 320HDD to see what would happen, said nothing there tried to boot into os this time then blue screened and I got demoralized and disconnected everything and logged in here and begain scanning through the posts.
I know I'm missing something, at the moment though I'm not sure what... cuz if I was sure I'd probably be trying to fix it and get it done instead of writing this post... well maybe not, I might be rummaging through the fridge aimlessly then putting on Punisher: Warzone for some good late night boob tube watchin, BUT I'd like to THINK if i knew what I was doing wrong I wouldn't be doing it!
So any suggestions? I suppose I should get the thermal wrap back on the drive soon before the sticky stuff either doesn't adhere anymore or makes a mess.
Also, yes, I'm fully aware I am a twit as of late, thank you for your understanding![]()

Ur dvd-drive is on the same 40pin cable as ur hdd? So check, that ur dvd-drive is jumpered as a slave.
-
the DVD was/is currently jumpered as a slave, If this is the cause of the problem I'm guessing since my OS drive is on the same (and only) IDE connection, that I won't be able to use the adaptor i got.
since I have no way of setting the lappy drives to slave's.
any other ideas then on how to complete the clone? -
So only to understand (I'm not an native english speaker):
Ur PC has an SATA-hdd but u have also an PATA-port, where u had connected ur DVD-drive as an slave and ur PATA-hdd from ur Toughbook as an master (have a look on the sticker on the drive).
Now u want to boot from ur dvd to create an image of ur PATA-hdd on an SATA-drive.
Which version of ACRONIS are u using?
Had u tried the EMERGENCY DISK and the SAFE VERSION? -
This is what I use:

Well, maybe not this exact one, but one of these. I put the new larger hard drive into the external, plug the usb into the toughbook it will be going into, then clone the drive. After it's done, you remove the smaller drive from the laptop and install the larger drive. Real simple!! I would suggest picking one up as they are cheap and with acronis, will save alot of hair!!

got kinda busy and forgot to update with how it all panned out.
so here goes.
Tried a few sets of the jumpers and to no avail so I ended up selfing everything for awhile as was busy with other projects. Over the holiday season ended up snagging someones 1TB external drive for an evening.
I figured the worst I had to lose was my time.
I plugged in the external HDD and ran Acronis and did a clone to the new drive. Worked like a charm. no ISO image just a direct clone of my HDD.
I made a boot disk on a USB stick as i wasn't sure if i would be able to boot from the external HDD even tho it showed in under HDD in the bios when it was connected.
Swapped out my stock drive for the 320GB i picked up and booted up.
First attempt trying to boot from the external failed (as kind of expected but worth a shot) not sure if it was just a setting i missed but it just said no bootable HDD available and i couldn't see the external in the bios anymore with the new drive in.
Poped in the boot disk USB stick and everything loaded up and got the transfer started from the external to the new drive.
After awhile everything was completed and I could boot from the 320 with everything how it was with the old smaller drive.
all in all took about 2hrs -4hr's (a good portion was wiping the external drive and restoring it back to a blank 1TB which just creeped along all night.)
anyway to summerize,
connected external drive,
ran acronis 2010 ->tools & util -> clone disk
then created 'bootable rescue media' on a usb flash drive
swapped internal drives
booted from flash
clone disk from external to internal
completed
thanks for everyones input
hope this may be of some help in the future. -
sounds like your pc was trying to boot from the laptop drive before the proper drive...
I have a 2.5" - usb adaptor for cloning, makes life a lot easier to just plug and go while windows is already up! -
I was looking at picking up one of those, however, I was not prepared to wait for it to be shipped, in the end it didn't matter as I did not get to cloning the drive for a few months. Now that it has transfered over I see little use for it as I do not see myself upgrading this drive in the future (short of purchasing a new toughbook) and in that case probably will look at having a larger drive installed at the time of purchase.
Fiddled for a few hours..
