I have struggled through, what seems to be, the way to update everything after the initial OS installation.
1. Turn off auto updates.
2. Download (on another PC) MS Update KB932823 and put it in a folder.
3. Download IE8 and put it into another folder.
4. Download SP3 and put it into another folder.
Transfer all of this onto your freshly loaded laptop via a USB key. Install the first MS update, then IE8 and then SP3. You will, of course, reboot after each installation.
Once all that is installed you need to turn back on auto update in the system. Then let it download the first activex-control. Reboot. Then run your update again. Let it churn for 45 minutes... It will take this long to get all the updates you need. Once you do this batch of updates... It shouldn't take as long.
After many hair pulling hours, I thought I would write this post so even I can refer to it when needed. I seen posts similar to this sprinkled around the site but no one thread devoted to it. With support for XP Pro ending in April 2014, I can't imagine people will still want to use it as a serious OS... But just in case, you may want to download all the updates now.

Hi Rick
Have you tried this? WSUS Offline Update - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection All I do is run the recovery media then this flash drive off line update. This will take care of everything....IE8, SP3, MP11, C++ Runtime Libraries, Silverlight, Update root certificates, Net frameworks and Office file converters. This is some really slick code that will save lots of hair

Nick... I haven't... I will try that on my next build... If I have one! LOL

I am wanting to try this "slick trick" and wondering about sequence. I've downloaded the file referenced above, and getting ready to put onto a usb stick and try her out. It is a "zipped file". Do I open it on the usb drive and unzip it first on the usb data stick? .... and then just run it on the fresh install of xp?
Most appreciate & best regards....time to sell off these 29's and get a few 19's ...thank you very much for this lnk! This will be very helpful!! -
You just got it about right. I got my recent Toughbook up with no problem with XP but the procedure is a lot different (and works pretty much instantly). A lot of the core files Windows needs to communicate with Windows Update are in the Cumulative Internet Explorer 8 Updates which you will have to hunt for. You will have to install each CIE8 update manually since every month MS changes the files needed to communicate with WU. It's what I get for still running 4 XP systems, half are desktops.
Here is the December one: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41404
1. Install SP3.
2. Install IE8.
3. Install the most recent CIE8 updates (as of writing December).
4. Update as you prefer (I generally start with Automatic Updates first since it installs a few files before going to Windows Update on IE). -
Thank you very much! I was interested in the referenced lik above: WSUS Offline Update - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection
It seems to imply that after a Factory Panasonic Image is installed, that the linked program can run "offline"
My question is regarding the offline linked "zipped" file. Wondering how to properly run that program.
Cheers.... -
Ok hope I got it all here....
Download offline updates and extract to your flash drive
Open this offline update folder and click on Update generator.exe
Click on the legacy product tab and choose English… I also check… clean up download directories, Include service packs, verify downloaded updates, includes C++ and runtime libraries and .net frameworks.
This will download all updates to this offline update folder. I used a 8gb flash drive on a 29 mk3 and XP was able to see the drive. Some XP versions may not see flash drive larger than this.
Now plug in the flash drive in the PC to be updated and click on the client folder then click on the update installer exe… I check mark…. Backup existing system files, update root C++ and runtime libraries, update windows media player, verify installation packages, automatic reboot and recall, and finally shutdown on completion. Now click the start button
Let her rip…Attached Files:

Just a quick thank you to ToughBook and Arkor for posting the information on XP and the file sequence. Just did a factory restore to a new disk, and it all worked great!

Thank you very much for the information...I just tried above with a factory restore MK2 CF-29, kept getting the blue screen of death...when I tried to get on the internet to add things and update...I could NOT get the above program to work, however it's probably just me. I kept getting bsod and restarting of system. Finally gave up and installed ubuntu on the system...I know everything is working/kosher because I am typing this on the forum with an ubuntu install...xp is great when it works....
