The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

I won't name any names here, it wouldn't be fair to boostedB5 to single him out as he is only one of many. I noted yesterday that a newcomer was posting questions and comments all over the place about how disorganized and rambling our threads were. He specifically mentioned that it was impossible to find drivers on the forum, too much off topic discussion.
This morning I see that our new friend has actually looked around a little bit and found the drivers and manuals thread, the FIRST reference on Alex's cleaned up FAQ, and asked a question based on his research which I will now answer. boosted, one of the drivers you mention "28M2XP.t1.zip", is for a Mark2 CF-28 running XP. The different sources sometimes have different filenames for the drivers, but a little research will usually get it figured out. The driver files with .zip extensions need to be extracted to a destination folder on your hard drive, usually /drivers or /util1, then you run the setup from there. The exe. files are self installing. Read the recent posts on CF-18 drivers for a description in more depth.
Finally, one last trip to the woodshed. The drivers and manuals thread was meant to avoid some of the very problems you were having yesterday. Over 4500 people have viewed the thread, read it, got the point, and asked their questions in the main forum. Only two have not gotten the point. (this is a hint) I'm glad you found the thread, I don't want the thread to end up with the same problems some of the others have due to our general lack of discipline when it comes to staying on topic. Please delete your post in the D&M thread and move your question to the main forum.
Again , welcome to the forum, forgive me for being cranky, and lets get your new Toughbook the way you want it.

Oh Cap, you bring joy to my heart. There is something about hitting fifty (which I did several years ago...). It is as though someone flips a switch on your "I don't care about your silly problem" meter and things that used to bug the living crap out of me just don't matter as much any more...or at least I tolerate them better. If these young 'uns (Lord I never thought I would hear myself say that!) would just slow down and read before engaging mouth, they would learn so much more in an even quicker fashion. I hope we get to meet one day, my sister lives in Dracut and it has been a while since I visited her at her place. "Let me square the yards, while we may, old man, and make a fair wind of it homeward."

    Capt. Dogfish -

I am probably included in your "rant" as well - but I also have a couple questions - you guys were great and answered my questionabout adding the USB mouse - I did it and didn't affect the mouse/touchscreen like it did on my CF-72 previously - BUT - now it won't go into standby mode like it did before I installed it - any ideas?? have tried unplugging it and no dice there either:confused:

    littlebrother,
Believe me, you have not heard me rant. I kept Rick (Toughbook) up all one night trying to keep me from getting banned for life after I went after a moderator.
Any way, just a guess, is it possible the mouse constantly sends a signal of some sort which keeps the computer from going to sleep? Is it a cable USB mouse or a wireless one with a little radio plugged into the USB socket?

I have lurked these forums for months, and only found a need to register this past week. While there is chatter and things amidst the information, its very easy to find. In my case i also would have found my answer without registering this time, but somehow i missed it even though i was in the proper threads,

If someone cannot find an answer it is because he/she is blind or lazy.

Thought we have always prided ourselves on not flaming noobs... I have noticed lately that some newcomers seem to start asking question without even Reading the stickies. Yes.. I know we get a little of topic at times... But so does every other forum. We are no different in that regard.

But it would help if people searched and read before besieging everyone with their (usually) simple problems/questions. Just my .02 cents.

Alex just did an awesome job (Long overdue by the way!) of putting together a fantastic grouping of what everyone should read....

I wonder if we can make that mandatory?

i havent used VB in years (I'm an SMF guy) but there used to be a plugin to allow you to force new users to read certain threads before they can post. Other ways to do it as well, but thats a start.

    We can't force anyone to read the sticky’s or to read what has been posted previously here but;

The sticky’s do work very well

It’s very unusual now to have to warn a new member on asking for copied restore disks since Toughbook made up the warning post last February

At the same time a Driver link was done up by Cap ,and that has saved us a lots of time as well

I will admit that finding information on specific problems can be hard at times
We are a bit unusual as we do tend to go off topic at times, and I think that we are the only section of the NBR forum like this
As Cap says this works for us, and if we were to change the way we do things here the 30 or so regular core contributors would loose interest as the forum would become just a normal boring technical forum, we would loose the creativity, and the fun that we have here

The Faq threads are our best effort into gathering info, as the forum contributors have researched old threads to extract the important information

This is a time consuming effort on their part , and I will give credit to
    Modly, capt.dogfish, mnementh,Toughbook, ohlip,and onirakkiss
for the long hours spent on these

I am currently working on my first contribution which is a faq on the popular cf-18 tablet
Its coming along slowly as I end up sidetracked answering questions on our main threads

That’s the way that I am, and I won’t change that either lol

In defence of us Dumb noobs, I came on, lurking for a while, read all of the 'read me first' sections, and still didn't find what I was lookin' for. . . .at first. Unfortunately too many people are used to getting it all without working for it.
Really just want to say thanks for this great repository of knowledge!
