Can anyone advise....was this intended....or is it the result of the upgrade going wrong??

But checking the forum quickly with my iPhone isn't the best experience.
I'll try to find the old old looks again.

 

This is really unfortunate and I'm being polite. Worse, there are no other options at the bottom of the page. I'm holding Blair personally responsible for this

EDIT: It strikes me that this can't be the final look. There are no adds visible and we know that isn't going to persist.

 

The theme is only temporary, it should get better in the next few days.

Two changes that I don't like are as follows:

1. I preferred the cleaner and simpler previous vbulletin default.

2. Having the avatars at the top instead of to the left seems to waste a lot of space, and it makes scrolling through posts more difficult. I preferred the avatar and all that information to be condensed on the left side so that you could see it more easily if you chose to, or that it would not seem to be in the way if you chose to ignore it.

 

Trust me guys I had nothing to do with this . Let's hope it gets better

 

Well I think they have a few bugs to fix
1 . Will not let me edit a post
2 . Will not upload a picture
3 . Can only " Quick Reply" ...I get nothing when I click " Go Advanced"

 

If you go to the setting tab at the top right of this page and then to General Setting and under Miscellaneous Options click on vBulletin 4 default style...it does not have all them orange_george colors

 

Once the bugs are out, and I relearn how to find things, it looks good to me.

Kind of like OSX the first time you see it. Nobody can deny that it looks more polished than Windows and is more responsive. And if you learn how to use it, it does all the same things as Windows, but if you are used to Windows, then it is aggravating to re-learn navigating the OS.

 

If you keep the converted settings the change is the same as visiting another country on holiday....it's different & you start to like it because it's different. So....

Hi guys, what you are currently seeing is vB4 forum right out of the box. There is much visual changes and customizations to be done.

Upgrading forums isnt as easy as installing a patch. Its like trying to upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows 7 and hoping everything is compatible.

 

I can see (just) that some genuine improvements will soon be here.
Sadly these low-contrast soft pastels make everything too hard to read for an old fella like me. And it's a bit too MyLittlePony-ish for my taste anyway.
Not sure why anyone but an advertiser would want the actual content of a forum page to fade into the background...

 

They upgraded the 405th a while back, it's still screwed up in looks.

My original comments were posted in jest. At the third time of logging in & trying both skins, it puts far too much strain on the eye's.


Hopefully, this temporary theme is temporary....as in the next five minutes....& someone is taking note of YOUR comments in the ABOVE discussion.

While I do understand that this is a for-profit page, waiting on all the advertising and Java to run has made my fast broadband connection seem like dialup!

Personally, I am more inclined to pay attention to less advertising, then more, more, more...

ADDED NOTE: The thing I really dislike about the ads are they will not let me scroll down until every single one if loaded!! Apparently sometimes the Ad server is running very slowly!

 

When you reach a certain age you like what you are used to. I thought for a while that everyone liked it! Whew!

I care naught for facebooks and all that other touchy feelie shtuff.

Enough complaining.

I have it set now for vB4 default style, running Ubuntu/ Chromium (Chromes daddy or mama) with adblock engaged. And getting by.

Most everyone agrees that the layout now sucks, especially on vertically-challenged screens. We're trying to get the admins to change the layout back to the left-side avatar ASAP. In the mean time, if you hate the orange text, change to vb4 default theme at the far bottom left hand dropdown. It doesn't melt your eyes as quickly.

 

I dont know if its just me, probably is, with the new look forum its taking agaes for the pages to load, its ok on Iphone with tapatalk but on PC with IE8 a real long time !!

 

Yeah it's heavier, on my phone (regular browser, no tapatalk) it loads much slower than before the upgrade. On my PC I can't notice a difference though. Do you have another browser that you can try?

 

No ive only got IE8, I'm also not getting reply info even though the box is ticked with instant email notification selected, I did get an email this morn saying I had a private message then when I looked there was no new PM, the email was notifying me of a read message revived 3 days ago !

 

Are you using vB4 Default?? it looks to be loading faster. The e-Mail notification is out of sync with updated posts....it's work in progress. This is phase one of a two-phase Implementation, so it will take time to get sorted.

It's the style / the way it all looks...that style has less color. You can change it at the bottom of this forum

 

It's a user style setting that changes the appearance of how pages are displayed. If you scroll to the bottom of this page....is the majority of the text on the page blue & black?? if so, you are already using vB4 Default....if the majority of the text is orange & black you are using vB4Converted ....toughasnails posted a "How To Change It" using the user settings tab in post 10 of this thread.

@Liteace: I've just realised that toughasnails has posted while I was typing the above so....

The old software contained a tool bar at the bottom of the page that allowed settings to be changed....no such tool bar on the new software....hence capt.dogfish's comments in post 5....That has now been changed & the tool bar allows two forum skins....vB4Converted & vB4 Default....But, using the bottom tool bar only saves the settings for the current session (A Bug) so....if you want to change settings that are saved in your user profile you need to go through the user tab settings route as explained in post 10.

EDIT 2 : Update on the Update of an Update....logged in & out three times....no save me settings using the bottom tool bar....but it saves the settings going through the user profile settings.

 

Looking better here guy's.

If you are logged-In & using vB4 Default through the saved user profile settings there is NO waiting for advertising to load....NO advertising....

Ive not changed any settings, the logging in and out 3 times has speeded things up a little, how did you get rid of the the advertising ?

All these ads really suck. Keep popping up every time I check messages, between messages, or switch back to the forum. Too much hassle to keep hanging out here.

How often are you guys getting ads? I have had one or two pop up but not every screen. I am running firefox with a few addon's to block ads too though.

 

I'm using IE8 without an adblocker....pages are loading quicker but you need to hit page refresh continually to block out the adds.

The world is constantly changing....resistance is futile....go with the flow.... NO.... I don't mean buy a Stinkpad.

I have been on about 50 pages and only seen one ad so far. If they up it where I do see them I will just have to add script killer/adblock, or go into firefox setting and have it load no pictures at all.

 

Personally, I would give it time for the dust to settle before making too many changes....tuesday night/wednesday morning (GMT) things were looking a lot better....but it looks like the bug fixes have created other problems....no pain....no gain.

 

I have to say I haven't had any ads pop up after the first one. And I'm on IE8 without any anti-spam-pop-up-things other than standard settings.

 

It could be you have spoken too soon....the e-Mail notification is back....when I tried to log back in the system hangs forcing a shut-down & restart. ....I like change.

 

I hope someone posts a "Before it sucked bunge" skin for this forum... soon.

In the pipeline dude....we are nothing if not "UNITED" in our confidence that the NBR Admin crew will get this "RIGHT".

 

If you are using the lovely "ORANGE" skin(with advertising)you can replace it with a lovely "BLUE" skin(without advertising) via the user settings.

scroll to the "Top" of this page & select "Settings" (next to "Log Out" button)>>

You are now in the "User Settings" page....In the Left Hand column "My Settings" options box, select the "General Settings" tab>>

Scroll down the page to "Miscellaneous Options" selection box & choose the "Forum Skin" tab>>

Change the skin style to "vB4 Default"....now scroll to the bottom of the page & select "Save Changes">>

"Right Click" on the "Desk Top" & select "Refresh" from the options list>>

You "SHOULD" now be "BLUE" with "NO" advertising.

Has it worked....or are you now navigating the "Dull Forum".

Edit: Yes CAP....I should have said....works for IE8 browser....AFTER you have logged in....sometimes.

 

I set vB4 Default at the bottom left of this page the same day they changed the forum, or the first time I logged on, whatever. No ads yet, decent blue color motif, kind of like early Windows, just can't find "User CP". Chrome browser.

K. I'm now using VB4 default; my eyes have stopped bleeding. But the whole top-heavy page layout is terribly wasteful of desktop real estate, as others have said. It's almost like working in a WORD document; I half expect Clippy to pop up saying "Hey... it looks like you're trying to flame that spammer back to the stoneage... would you like some help with that?"

AllUrGroceries, please add my voice to the list of people you need to hunt down later... errr, people who really want to go back to the side-heavy layout.

I realize we are involved in a viewing format war; people who view on smartphones are going to prefer a portrait-aspect friendly page layout, while those viewing on a real computer are going to prefer a landscape-aspect friendly layout. The difference is that for those who are viewing on a smartphone or tablet, changing to a landscape viewing mode is as easy as turning the device 1/4 turn; those of us using a laptop or desktop face a much more difficult task doing so.
