I'm probably way behind the curve, but new user michaeldcoates turned me on to this. I have been sending a lot of drivers to people lately, no knock on Modly or Rob, but the earlier models had somewhat arcane file names making it hard for a newbie to pick out the right drivers for his or her model. So I have made up bundles for the CF-27 which I was burning to disk and snail mailing due to size and all those .exe file extensions Outlook is so fond of deleting.

You just upload the bundle, enter the destination email, enter your email or an alias if you wish, but you won't get email delivery confirmation, press send, and "Bobs your uncle" it gets there. For free! You all probably already now about this already. I didn't.

Funny... I saw the link and thought of a NY suicide service...
-
Rick,
I didn't get till I saw your other post.

Sometimes my sense of humor is rather, "Out There!"
-
PFFF!!! My server is better!! haha
-
I don't know, your server is sure down ALOT! First this coming Tuesday, then...well, who knows but I'm sure it will be A LOT!!
-
Rob, as I said, no knock on you or Modly, but do you have the time to pull out all the drivers for a specific model of CF-27, label them, bundle them up with descriptions and manuals and send them out? Have at it.

And to Doobi... I know you're kidding, but as of right now the server uptime (WITHOUT REBOOTS) is 320 days, 12 hours, 40 minutes and 2 seconds and counting! (Not to mention the uptime on my SAN and router)
Eat that! Jerk! -
Also, that WAN1 for 107 days - yeah - that's Comcast for ya lol and even at that I only recorded it being out for 24 seconds, same with the LAN.
I take pride in my high availability server -
Rob,
I'll take you up on that in the next couple of days. I sent them all to Modly, but that was a long time and the better part of a continent away.

Thanks! -
It's funny cos i've been using yousendit for about 5 years now, maybe i can teach you old dogs a few new tricks!
Best part for me is that you may only be able to email it to one person but you can get the url for the upload and give it to anyone. The file lasts for 14 days before it is taken off the server. -
Rob... I have several PCs that are basicaly sitting around doing nothing except making the local elec company rich... I sure would like to set up my own network and have a domain that I would like to use. (MrToughbook.com) I should probably ask Panasonic is they have any objection I suppose but if not that... Then another... Anyway... I assume that you are your own domain, yes? You are your own server, forewall, etc. I'd love to be able to get a few pointers as far as first steps so I could set up my own. I usually would just go out on the Internet and start digging... But you have done such an awesome job with yours I'd like to copy it if you don't mind... Well.. Not copy it but doing something similar.
Then I wouldn't have to use Verizon's limited storage space and instead could use my own. I am particularly worried about the firewall and how to correctly set it up. I can figure out how to route the DNS stuff I think. How much am I looking at spending to do it right? I have the server already... A 3.4GHz CPU I built a little over a year ago... It's just sitting in my media room waiting for me to fly a plane.... -
Well first of all I don't have a P4 cpu... the CORRECT way to go about it would be to get a XEON server (so assuming that you have a Xeon server setup, then you're all good).
2nd, you should use SAS (serial attached scsi) (NOT THE SAME AS SATA) hard drives in a RAID 5 format (4 drives).
3rd, you want to purchase a legal copy of windows server 2003 STANDARD (NOT small business or enterprise!!!)
4th. You would want to invest in a good firewall (Netgear prosafe's are about $130, or you could got with a higher end prosafe (like I got) for about $450 or a watchgaurd firebox X5 for about $500).
5th, you NEED to have a static IP. You would have to contact your ISP to make sure that it is indeed okay to host websites on that line and you would purchase either 1 static or a block of 5 statics depending on what you wanna do (I only have one) and I have comcast business.
6th, you need to decide if you want to build your site on .asp or .php -- if you use asp and .net you would need to use IIS (Internet information services) 6.0 (built into server 2003 standard). If you wanna use .php to build your site you would want to use Apache (either 1.3.33 or 2.0.x) (I have 1.3.33)... as far as the database server is concerned, generally if you are using Apache then you would use mysql (free). if you are using IIS you would typically use Microsoft SQL 2005 (expensive).
7th, you really wanna invest in a good battery backup. If you get a 1500VA one you can typically run a xeon server with 4 hard drives and all the networking equipment (router, modem, switch, access point etc...) for about a half hour. If you invest in a 3000VA or more (like I have), you can more than double your run time to about an hour or more (mine I tested running for 84 minutes)... the 1500VA APC battery backups typically cost $200, while the higher end 2200 or 3000VA batteries cost upwards of $1000.
As far as physical server setup, I purchased a 2 post 7' relay rack with 2 cantilever shelves on the bottom to place my Dell SC1420 Xeon server and the 3000VA battery backup. I bought a monitor stand that also has the pull out keyboard and mouse under it ($280 freakin' dollars JUST FOR THAT PIECE) and a normal shelf for other non-rack mountable networking equipment.
The pictures that you see on robsnetworks.com is actually 2 physically separated networks, one being my moms network, and the other being mine. -
Rick, I did a lookup on your domain name and I can see that you've already registered it to yourself (GOOD MOVE)... As far as the DNS is concerned, I don't host my DNS (cuts down on a crapload of traffic), I use zoneedit.com (which I pay like $5/year/domain for)... in the past 5 years they have NEVER gone down, so I can vouch on their reliability.
I hate working with DNS... it's a pain in my rear. -
You have been PM'ed! -
Rob.... Thanks for the very detailed info.... It looks like this will be something I work toward... Not work ON... If you know what I mean... I guess I need to start buying pieces...
-
For sure... I've spent well over $15,000 total over the last few years on my network, so it ain't cheap that's for sure
Free FTP service, it works!
