In that never ending search for the Holy Grail of Internet software "Free" i have had a couple of successes lately

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free_and_open_source_software_packages

Wikipedia has this extensive listing of free and open source software. This is a good place to start.

It did not list a couple of my favorites like these:

    AntiVir antivirus software http://www.free-av.com/

MyDefrag a most excellent defrag and HD optimizer http://www.mydefrag.com/

Openoffice.org free word processor, spreadsheet, database software etc.
    http://www.openoffice.org/

TweakNow.com reg cleaner and startup manager
    http://www.tweaknow.com/

Filezilla FTP file transfer software i use a lot
    http://filezilla-project.org/

Many of these I found by readig PCMag.com's article on "The Best Free Software of 2009"
    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2338803,00.asp

    Enjoy

Thanks Toyo those are good ones.

Here is one i found when i needed a paint program to change the colors in a bit map image.

Paint.net is a upgrade for the Microsoft Windows paint program with some of the nicer tools found in photoshop.
It is open source and a donation ware program where you can voluntarily help keep the upgrades comming.

I needed the magic wand feature to select a particular color and replace it with another that this software includes.

    Have fun

Charlottemoo started a thread similar to this a while back... I was trying to find it to link them but can't seem to locate it.
