Well, after digging through some more of these incredible educational threads, I replaced the good keyboard in the 800mhz machine with a nice rubberized backlite unit from Bob Johnson (it cleaned up beautifully), and then put the keyboard from the 800 into the 600.
I read that it was a little tight to put the rubberized board in and it was. Had to trim a little of the foam off the cable cover and gently use a screwdriver to set the front tabs. Everything went together nicely. I will say that for some reason, on both computers, the screws for the hinge cover piece were nasty to work with on the keyboard edge. Came close to stripping them out even with the right screwdrivers. (Yeah, I read that thread and have the good ones!)
Not being able to leave well enough alone, I decided to swap the touchscreens because I liked one better than the other. Of course the better one was on the 600 ( is there a better way to refer to them than 600 or 800?). anyway, that turned out to be a real goat roping contest since the 800 has the RIM antenna. BUT, all's well that ends well and they both power up with no sparks or nasty smells and the keyboards actually work!!
Couldn't have and WOULDN'T have done it without the pioneering work that you guys have already done. So -- 5000 attaboys to each of you!!
