Hello, Just received my cf-29 mk5 and was wondering what the users are using for mapping software(Garmin-MS streets).

Are there any FREE software programs out there to use and not buy?

One more question, how waterproof is the cf-29 with the regular keyboard?

    Thanks

Mapfactor - PC Navigator 11 Free is a NICE program, especially if you have WWAN! :)

Downloaded it ages ago but haven't really used it yet. Exiting the program seems a bit strange don't you think?

Playing with OpenCPN 2.5.0 and the C-Map charts just now to see if it's worth keeping.

    I like free stuff!

When I exit, I just tap the touchscreen one more time and it disappears...

    Buddy... Do some searching...

You do get what you pay for. But it depends on what is most important to you!

Look up Capt. Dogfish' posts. He gives a great explaination of the various software.

In short... For street navigation... Streets and Trips (Cheap) gives fair street nav but the POI and trip planning features are awesome. I prefer IGuidance as it is VERY touchscreen friendly. I don't need the POI and trip stuff as I drive mostly local and want to be able to pop my screen with my finger instead of using the touchpad.

Look some of it up... There is a ton of info here... Including topo map software.

For USGS free topo maps look at USAPhotomaps. I'm running it on Ubuntu and XPPro. It works and shows me "what I am used to". 7 1/2 min. topog.

TB was right Capt Dogfish has some great ideas and a bunch of everyday experience. Some play with GPS...he works with it.

+1 for iGuidance for actual mapping/routing. I like the uncluttered interface as well.

S&T works well for trip planning, not so much for actual in-vehicle use.
