    Something wrong with my Connection....
    I`ll start again....

I have just bought a Bargain CF-74c for Astrophotography/Telescope control and was wondering if there was any way of fitting GPS functionality to the 74 mk1?
I have seen on a few sites advertising the mk1 that they offer optional WWAN,
Would a GOBI 2000 card with GPS work in the CF-74c.?
I`ve not taken delivery of the TB yet so am unsure of capabilities.
I am a complete Toughbook virgin so please be nice..!!
    Best regards.
    Joe.

First, post your complete model #. Second, the WWAN is located in a bump on the display lid. If you don't have the bump, you don't have the circuit board and antenna necessary for WWAN. Lastly, not sure if a Gobi 2000 card will work in that model CF-74. Welcome to the jungle. :)

    I sold it..
Have now purchased a CF-28s with all the trimmings so I`m now happy....or am I..?

If anyone here has a 1 GIG MOBO for sale I would pay top dollar for such an item.

That will depend on how you plan to use the computer. You swapped to a semi rugged to a fully rugged so you got the good heavy duty case, but on the hardware side you went backwards from a core duo, up to 4gb ram to Pentium 3 600,800,1000 MHz and maxes at 768mb ram on the 800,1000 MHz models

I only intend using it for controlling my Telescope mount and guiding program/camera long exposure control.
I really needed something that could withstand the rigours of being outdoors all night when not being used in the observatory and the cf-28 I was offered has the emmissive keyboard and Gps which will be really useful for my polar alignment.
Besides,,,I have a Quad core tower I use mainly so the TB will only be used for my Astrophotography.

From previous users the GPS is hard to find, but it's not that good in finding signals. I have seen reports from users here under a clear sky they had problems getting a good fix.

I haven't seen the needed specs of your software needs but it sounds like a 28 will work. Now how good is your battery? The CF-28 has been out of production for a while now and all of the original batteries are old. I got two that still hold close to a hour. You also have the option of a media bay battery. Since they were used on the CF-29 finding one in better shape say 2hrs may be plausible.

Now they do have aftermarket batteries. I have seen reports of one good/one bad from the same seller also some after just a few months don't work over a hour.

The 28 battery has a smart chip in it that degrades the battery over time. So rebuilding right now on a "dead" battery won't work, but if you have one that isn't reading dead, aka flashing red, you may be able to re-cell it and get some usable life out of it.

If you do decide to re-cell, CAUTION, it can be dangerous and have the cells explode if done wrong.

Let me know if you get it done. Not sure you if can send a pm, don't see that option in user cp, otherwise I would have sent you one. Maybe I don't have enough posts?

I think you can now, if not it will be soon. You have a minimum amount of posts before you can PM.
