Hello,
Was trying to find some old threads regarding gaming on the Toughbook.
I personally have a CF29, and tried installing a couple games the other day. One was Quake, and the other was a boat racing game. Both installed easily enough, but when I went to play, they began to load up, the screen flashed, and it returned to my desktop, like I never even tried launching the game.
Is this just my cue that my machine will not run a game like this, with its limited graphics, or am I missing something?
Any help would be appreciated.
Scott

You will not find anything about "gaming" on a Toughbook anywhere around here... At least for the past few years. (As long as I have been here)
If you want to play games... You need another laptop... If you want to survive a nuclear blast... Then buy a Toughbook! Toughbooks are NOT gaming notebooks... They "survive"....
From your other posts you may have other issues if you are still on the same Toughbook that keeps restarting at random.... -
Thanks for the reply. I suspected as much- guess that explains why there are no threads about this anywhere.
I actually have the bugs worked out on this machine. Had to reinstall the OS once, but have not had any major problems since.

Hi Scott,
you don't mention what speed or version the machine is?
The big restriction on the CF-29 (well, my Mk3) is that the built-in Intel graphics don't support some of the latest OpenGL features - I think one that's missing is 'Pixel shader'.
Because of this, you are stuck with games released before that feature was a requirement.
Examples of games that run fine are Quake2 & Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
There are no doubt masses of others but I happen to like Quake 2..
If you have any problems, just make sure you have the latest graphics driver from Intel.com
The basic Windows drivers do not include the OpenGL stuff.
If you want to find out if a specific game will run, have a look at this site:
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest
It does a mini-benchmark and compares the machine results to the minimum spec for that particular game.
Anything older than the games in the list should just work.
Remember the Pentium M CPU is more efficient than desktop CPUs of a similar age; my 1.4GHz CF-29 Mk3 comes out as equivalent to a 2.1GHz P4 in that test.
One big tip - get a wireless optical mouse, playing Quake 2 using the mousepad is no fun... -

Jenkins, thank you very much for that great information!

Well, I can say that Gens, the PC version of Sonic R, and Narbacular Drop all seem to work fine on my CF-29. (And Narbacular Drop is FREE! It's kinda like Portal but older.)

Sure, you won't be able to play the latest and greatest games, but if you like the older games you can still have fun. I used MAME on my CF-28S, and I used to play Quake years ago on my old PII 366 Dell laptop that had worse graphics than a CF-28 or CF-29. If the games don't require hardware 3D support, you should be OK.

Actually... The stock solitaire and pinball games work great on the Toughbook... I stand corrected.

Really? Mine plays fine... Less carpel with the touchscreen!

Connor is only lagging because he can't decide where to play the cards...
He's a little slow, you know
