I'm just going to post this since after trying all the Microsoft operating systems on my two CF-27s over the last year, I've noticed the same glitch (for lack of a better word) when it comes to getting the audio working on the Mk. 2 models and nobody has mentioned it.
I used the following two files which you can Google for if you need them - ydsxg_v1038_w9598.exe and cf27_mk2_w2k_sound.exe.
On Windows 98 or Me
When you first install Windows, the Yamaha sound driver that gets installed does not play any sounds.
You need to install the ydsxg_v1038_w9598.exe file by unpacking it to the default c:/utils/drivers/sound directory and then going to the device manager and updating the driver using the "specify a location" search.
BUT the sound still will not play even after a reboot and now you'll get a yellow exclamation mark in device manager to tell you that the device isn't working.
So what you need to do then is reboot, hold down F8 and go into Safe Mode and then delete EVERYTHING in the "sound" section of device manager- all 14 or so devices.
Then power off the Toughbook. Do not restart or you'll have to go through it all again. It has to be switched off completely and then restarted.
When Windows starts, the Yamaha sound card will be working and you'll even have extra tabs under the power management section (on the screen saver tab) to play with.
On Windows 2000 or XP
You'll probably get the same problem as with Windows 98/Me. Follow the steps above but this time you only need to delete the already marked devices with yellow exclamation marks.
Again you need to update the cf27_mk2_w2k_sound.exe drivers from where you unpacked them, delete all the non-working Windows 2000 or XP sound drivers that it kindly loaded for you, power off then restart.
But you may need to do it again 2 or 3 times no matter if you chose to power off completely or restart with XP because it is hell bent on forcing you to have its built in drivers rather than the ones you want. I tried this with XP Home and Pro and the same thing occurred. Eventually it just gives up and the real drivers will load but you will lose them again if you don't shut down completely after that session.
So the secret is to power off completely once the drivers are working and you hear sound playing and then you can restart as many times as you like in future because they are well and truly fixed.![]()
Something else for Windows Me users
If you can't get the touchscreen working with the drivers labelled t5setup.exe which work perfectly with Windows 98 then use the cf27_mk2_w2k_tscreen.exe drivers instead. Why Windows 2000 drivers work perfectly and the Windows 95/98 drivers don't work at all I have no idea.
The mouse pointer will stay on screen and flicker during any screensaver you use with Windows Me too and there's nothing you can do about it.
The pros outweigh the cons though because Windows Me will allow you to use any size of USB thumbdrive without needing additional drivers to load all your lovely programs. Windows 98se needs drivers for just about every USB device and most of the new USB drives don't have them.

I found 3 installation drivers for sound but only 1 was correct and mixed all pretty much totally. I could solve this just by deleting all audio device from my computer's properties and then shutdown and restart so then before loading windows, it note me about unknown audio device and then select the folder of unpacked ydsxg_v1038_w9598.exe and only then it worked for me and installed all files properly and you should see Yamaha DS-XG audio config in control panel. A pity that it's pretty hardly compatible with soundblaster. I encounter many times specially with dos games that soundblaster won't work for music.
EDIT: LOL!!!! NOW I GOT MY SOUNDCARD WORK 100%! Previously I all the time got messages like FM chip not detected or soundblaster not detected. Now I when I did rightclick My computer -> properties and then setup of the Yamaha DS-XG and there I changed IRQ and DMA settings manually and also I noticed there is FM which was 03a8h and changed it to the 0388h and then it started to work and now i can use FM chip (Ad-Lib) in every game!!!
WOW!!!

I just used the "setup" in my old DOS games to change the channels and IRQs. I was quite amazed to get Quake, Blood and Ignition all running perfectly.
I couldn't cope with Windows 98se on my Toughbook though because it wouldn't run the latest version of Opera properly (which resizes the webpage to the screen so no need to scroll). -
Hello,
This is my first post, I have a CF-27EJ6K3AE and also have the sound problem.
But i am finding your instructions a little difficult to follow.
I have downloaded the ydsxg_v1038_w9598.exe and unpacked it to its default location.
then in 'Sound, video and game controllers' i have 3 devices:
Wave device for voice modem
YAMAHA DS-XG Legacy Sound System
YAMAHA DS-XG PCI Audio CODEC
I am updating the 'Legacy sound system' only.
When i shut down and restarted i did not get the yellow exclamation mark.
I restarted again in safe mode but not sure what you are refering to when you say "delete EVERYTHING in the "sound" section of device manager- all 14 or so devices."
I have looked at hte list of available drivers and i have 4 in total dated:
9-24-1999
11-25-1999
9-24-1999
and the one it defaults too 1-26-2000
Thanks for any help you can give. -
As a reminder.... There are lots of sites that kindly offer drivers for our Toughbooks.... The only ones to trust come from PANASONIC... not off the wall places. These are drivers... I've seen some places that tack other stuff onto the drivers... Avoid this.... Read the stickies and download from the suggested sites.

I downloaded the drivers from the web site CF27user recommended www.toughbookdrivers.com.
The bit i dont understand from Dr Blood's post is "delete EVERYTHING in the "sound" section of device manager- all 14 or so devices". -
Are you saying you don't understand WHY to do that, or that you don't understand/know HOW to do that?
-
I'll second what Toughbook said. The drivers and manuals sticky specifically suggests that you get your drivers from Panasonic sites and that you use third party sites only as a last resort. I'm sure that any of the Panasonic sites will have all of the proper drivers for your CF-27, and I have them posted on both Modly's site and on Toughbooktalk.com.

Using the sticky thread i have downloaded from 'http://www.panasonic.co.uk' as recommened in capt.dogfish post.
The recommended file based on my model number search was '27eaw95.zip' as being the audio driver (CF-27EJ6K3AE) running windows 98 second edition.
updated the driver choosing the have disk, specify location option.
I do not get the yellow exclamation or the 14 devices i am supposed to delete while in safe mode. -
