The non-WWAN W8 has a simcard slot built into the lid. Does anyone know if there are antennas already in the non-WWAN W8? or which Gobi WWAN card the CF-W8 uses? Is it easy to get to without completely disassembling the laptop?

The WWAN card fits in the lid under the rectangular cover where the SIM card slot is. The antenna are also under that cover. If it is like the CF-T5, open the SIM cover and remove the 2 screws. On the LCD side remove the 2 rubber bumpers at the top of the screen. There is a screw under each bumper. Remove them and then remove the rectangular cover. There are 2 dip switches to set. There is a diagram showing settings for WWAN1, WWAN2 and WWAN3. I don't know the proper setting for the Gobi card but, it shouldn't be hard to figure out.

I installed a Novatel EU860D in my CF-T5. There was no diagram for the switches. I found that either 1-on, 2-off or 1-off, 2-on would show WWAN in the BIOS. I used the Mobilink 3 software from the Panasonic Canada site to install on Windows 7. It also updates the firmware to allow connections at 7.2 mbps. The software is not available on the US site.

Thank you for the info. Also, I got impatient, and removed those screws already. Here are a couple pics:

Wow! These pics are too big!! Must google for resizing tags. Couldn't find working tags, so I just resized the images. Sorry for the enormous images.

If the Gobi2000 works, it also has GPS. Does any one know if any devices are blacklisted in the BIOS?

I believe Panasonic has a habit of disabling GPS in their Gobis.

Is GPS disabled in their cards or is there just no software that takes advantage of it? I have GPS available in my Panasonic GOBI 2000 as well as the internal GPS but I used the generic WWAN GOBI software from the canada site once I got it activated. It also allows SMS/MMS from the sim.

You guys realize that this part is available directly from Heartland for $132 right?

    GOBI 2000 Card – 1100984 - $132.12

Why would you spend $230 for it???!?! I bought one and popped it in my CF-31 and it worked just dandy! Also the BIOS is locked out so you can't just pop any card in and go. You have to download the special program and re-write the BIOS for GOBI support :)

    Hi there, new guy here!

I live in the UK but got myself a Panny CF-W8 whilst in the USA since it was a) readily available and b) seriously discounted.

How would I go about taking advantage of the SIM card slot?

No, thanks, problem is Panasonic CSA software tells it's not correct modem and doesn't allow to load firmware for carrier :)
I will try again today, maybe some sort of manual setup.

BaRRmaley: If you are in Ukraine as per your details, you have no need for the CSA at all.

The CSA is *ONLY* for use in the USA (and Canada for some networks I'm led to believe).

I think I've already tried these drivers.
There is VID/PID problem - need to be changed in device or drivers.

... so with all this discussion, I suppose I shouldn't buy one of the "HP" Gobi2000 cards off eBay for my CF-30... the surefire way is through Heartland... grrrr.

    Hi all,

Managed to get a hold of a gobi 1000 wwan with my cf-w8, installed it, sofar so good, however, card is recognized by vodafone software, but when inserting a sim card it says that the simcard is not inserted,

Have found out, that if i set dip switch 1 to on, it sees the card, and if both are on, the card is gone from the system, if all are off the card is gone, not recognized.

Can anyone help me with this ?

Am i missing a dip switch somewhere on my CF-w8, only found 1 place with 2 dips in the area of the sim card reader.

Or could it be that the card is locked for a provider, question than is how to find out ?

First, what country are you in? There are only four switch settings. Off, WWAN1, WWAN2 and WWAN3. One of the three settings should work. Is the Gobi card a Panasonic card or for another manufacturer?

    @ db04p71,

I am in the Netherlands, and the card as far as i can see is a ex panasonic card ordered from toughdepot, so as far as know it came from a panasonic toughbook.
Where should i find the four switch settings. Off, WWAN1, WWAN2 and WWAN3 you mention ?

It's the 2 dip switches that you see by the Gobi card. There are only 4 combinations, off-off, on-off, off-on and on-on. I believe there is a diagram, maybe under the Gobi card, but I might be thinking of a different model. Currently, I have an EU-860D in my CF-W8. It appears to work with either on-off or off-on. Forum member Pinecone may be able to help you with getting Gobi and Vodaphone to work. He's in the UK.

    @ db04p71

Its not that the gobi doesnt work, it is recognized by the vodafone software, the odd thing is that when the sim is inserted the software doesnt recognize it is inserted, and says insert sim card, have tested the sim with a pcmcia card and has no problems.

I hope Pinecone can help me

Perfect timing - just tuned into this thread :)

Firstly, (forgive me for checking the basics!) you need to at least reboot the device. Sometimes I have to turn it off and back on before the SIM card is recognised after booting back up.

Secondly, apparently you haven't posted enough for me to be able to send a PM. Let me know an email address and I'll ping across the Panasonic connection manager for the Gobi 1000.

A non 3G-unit...probably why the connection manager is reporting model not supported. Failing that.....

Create a new dial up connection.
    Set it to dial *99***1#
Go into Device Manager > Modems > Gobi Properties > Advanced > Extra Initialisation command, and enter this:
    at+cgdcont=1,ip,"<APNHERE>"
Substitute <APNHERE> for the APN of the network you're using (keeping the double quotation marks).
Dial up using the username/password for the network (usually web//web but maybe different in NL).

Let me know if that works!

Another question. Is the SIM card for a Vodaphone WWAN account or is it a card from a cell phone? AFAIK, a cell phone SIM card will not work.

tried tips, no luck.. check email Pinecone for errors..

and connection manager states the pc isnt supported ..

thats odd, when the vodafone software detects its, but only says place sim card, if i dont get that, it would say no device supported, and not even give the option for simcard
