    PIII 600 mhz, 13" touchscreen, 128mb RAM on board (w/ 256mb stick)

There's no such thing as a xxFN so you may be reading that wrong. Don't know what the B stands for other than it refers to the wireless capabilities which could have been changed since factory.

i am running ubuntu and is it possible for the touchscreen to work in ubuntu?
and is it possible to add or replace the ram with a larger stick?

how about the cpu is it possible to upgrade? i cannot find anything pointing to any networking besides 56k. I am running a pcmcia wifi card for now.

can the cf28 handle usb 2.0 cards via the pcmcia?

The factory never made any Toughbooks that ended in N, which tells the type of keyboard. If it has that, it was added by somebody other than Panasonic. The F represents an MUI windows install which doesn't really matter.

You can't upgrade the CPU by itself - it's soldered on. Can't remember about max ram size on that one but someone else here can help with that as well as touchscreen on linux. Somewhere on here are some topics about adding in LAN and there are a lot of topics about modding in some wireless.

That white sticker is an after-market sticker. If you peel that off, you will see the model number given by the factory. That is the one you should be looking at first. As ZF said though, that is just a starting point as upgrades/downgrades could have been made after that. Also, when you go to panasonic's site, it only seems to work on IE, so if you are using a different browser, ie Firefox, it will not work.

nothing under the sticker :( just a grey square. and it doesn't look like it has a touch screen. The surface of the screen is a bit to solid to be a resistive touchscreen and i tried the evtouch drivers no touch :(

However it appears touchscreen on/off alternative in bios but i have not seen anything pointing to there being a touch screen on my laptop.

is it possible to swap the harddrive with a standard laptop 2,5 drive or is it only possible with original drives.

I do not want to spend too mutch money on my cf28 because i got it for 600 SEK would be equal to 99$ USD

The last letter is the continent code. Perhaps it was shipped elsewhere other than North America?

They've been known to append extra characters to the end, perhaps for customer-specific configurations. I've seen "-BKB" on some, probably denoting a backlit keyboard. The last batch of 27s I got have "-98" or "-NT", undoubtedly denoting the OS that they shipped with.

You're right about the extra characters, they meant something appended from the original factory model. Most of the extra characters were added after it left the factory (by Heartland or Panergy for instance) when something changed. Like changing a white chicklit to a rubberized keyboard sometimes added on BKB to the end and SIR meant a sierra wireless modem. That was on the older units though and the only extra characters I remember seeing on the 28s was BKB. When 98 or NT was added on it meant an OS upgrade from what was standard.

The last letter (M in the case of CF-28MBFAZE M) actually does point out the keyboard. For instance, E = UK layout (as in CF-28MBFAZE E, F = French, G = German layout, L = Belgian, P = Spanish, T = Italian, 4 = Dutch, and 5 = Portugese layout. There are a few more like the Asian ones but there was never an N.

well ive forgot to mention i have a norwegian keyboard. but it's great for me because i swedish so the layouts are almost identical.

But are you people shure about my touchscreen? do i have one?
I cant get it to work under ubuntu in that case. I could install xp but with a 600mhz and 376mb ram i am not so shure if it would be a pleasant experience.

However it runs fast and smoothly on ubuntu.

    Grav - FOR SHAME!

I know you want to get rid of your girlfriend's ex, but really... handing him a laptop full of firecrackers with an Arabic keyboard and "hiring" him to meet your "uncle" Balthazar at the airport simply is not acceptable...

you bigot :) Actually it might seem like a strange request outside of the "D".. But what you probably don't realize is Arabic is the second language here!

Actually (unlike most of my fellow Texans), I am QUITE aware of the worldwide popularity of languages (GASP!) other than English. Arabic is a close 4th behind English, and then ONLY because we include all EU nations which speak "The Queen's English" in with our own statistics (Those who've been to London know full well it's a different language). Even so, we STILL rank only third in the world; slightly behind Spanish and WAY behind (Like 3:1 behind) Mandarin Chinese. Some lists will group Hindi in with Arabic; (Huh? Yes - its true) and THEN we fall to a pretty distant 4th place. At least we beat out the Russians in the language race...

So... I may be a bigot, but it's not about languages. I was just trying to think of the maximum trouble you could get into with an Arabic keyboard; and that scenario seemed pretty good in this psychotic land...

    Vaya con huevos!

Gravitar could sell an arabic keyboarded laptop in Dearborn for quite a pretty penny though!

Installed xp and got the touch working great.
It actually preforms better then what a 600mhz usually does wich is great!

However is there any possybillity to rotate the screen? It cant be done with the xp drivers and not with the silicon motion LynxEM driver i found.

Is there any drivers that could make that possible?

Unfortunately, the arabic one from Heartland is about $500 but you might be able to find one cheaper elsewhere.

Heh.. well I did a lot of travelling last year, and me and my tattered copy of Al-Kitaab Fii Tacallum Al-Arabiyya (hooked on phonics, arabic-style) were practically inseparable.. It passed through many an airport security checkpoint. Never got questioned about it, and no strip searches!
