Just found this forum while looking for a refurb CF 29. My CF 17 is getting a bit dated, though it functions perfectly and is adequate for it's task. I think it's 10 years old and been rattling around in the back of my work van the whole time. I swapped the CMOS battery a few years ago but other than that it's never been opened up. Now that the main battery is toast again, I'm thinking it's time to get a new computer. Mostly because the refurb CF 29s can cost about as much as a replacement battery for the CF 17.

My question: (I searched, really I did) Is there a trusted source for these things? I'm not interested in getting the cheapest. I need a decent, reliable refurb.

    TIA,

    John

    Better units are around

You have to stay away from the sellers that have thousands for sale though

It was the same when the Australia cf-18's hit the market just over a year ago , they were well used and buyers took their chances with those lease returns

The positive thing is that all cf-29's have come down in price as the market is flooded with them

Some of the members here that resell the cf-29 series updated modified and clean units are selling them at around $1000 now

    What are your requirements ?

One model to stay away from is the "SBC" CF-29HTM50BM . Many ebayers are selling these one's and also tiger direct. Touchscreen and batteries are the big problem with these. The price looks good but when you get it , it has a bad paint job, the touchscreen does not work and the battery is toast. Do a search and see for yourself Notebook Reviews - Laptop Reviews and Netbook News.

Thanks guys. My requirements? Serial port. For reals. My 17 (300Mhz, 4.3GB, 64MB, 98SE) is pulling the freight, so you gotta believe my needs are on the shallow end of minimal. XP would be nice. Then I could retire my aggravating Aspire One. I just want something I can trust, although the 17 will probably outlive me and I can keep it as a backup.

I must give your credit.... your on here asking about a CF-29 BEFORE you buy one, most don't . Myself I would look at a CF-29L or M (MK4) or CF-29N or P(MK5) . These are 1.6MHz. If you need more info check this out CF-29 - ToughWiki

I got mine off ebay but i feel i lucked out. i looked for about a week and found many i liked but were missing battery or something of the like. if you are computer savy, and have a legal copy of windows, id look for a whiped one, as they are cheaper and the drivers can be easily had online. you are doing the right thing by researching first, as opposed to jumping in with your eyes cosed like i did LoL

    PS

i did see the SBC toughbooks on ebay and they were all beaten up bad,so yea, be very careful what you get and make sure the pics you are looking at are the ones of the actual unit you are bidding on!

I won't put up any links here as the sharks that follow the forum would snap up the deals

That seller has had some interesting items
I have seen his listings before

The issue for us in north america is shipping and duty from the UK
+ The pricing is not as good as the usa, even myself in Canada find that the market is smaller and our prices ar a bit higher than the us

I purchased a few small items over the years from the uk , the last was a restore disk set for a cf-18

The prices might be OK on your side but in the USA/Canada they are high  ...after you add the shipping $40.00 ,BATTERY $50.00 ,HDD $30.00 , CADDY $80.00, POWER SUPPLY $25.00 and CD/DVD ROM $75.00 . That's $300.00+ plus duty at customs the cost of the 29 and it's only a MK3...$600.00 . I do feel sorry for you guys and can understand why I am asked " do you ship overseas" all the time :)
