    my random thoughts...
1 - hours, in a device with no moving or wearing parts, hours is a bit of a mot point, general overall condtion is more important!
If you are that worried, I belive you can get some time reading by interrogating the SMART data on the hard drive, if the driveis original then this will approximate the hours of the laptop.

2 - upgrading the mobo, as a glib comment, id say no, there will be manylittle differences between the generations, if you want a faster machine, flog the slow ones and you should have eough to buy 2 better specones :)

To answer the OP's question, you simply hit F2 when it is booting to get into the BIOS... It will say it on the main page there. Be sure to not change any settings unless you are 1000000% positive on what you are doing as if you change somethings you can make the machine not boot.

    Thanks

Look around the forum for Mnem's lecture on the life expectancy of electronic components, it might give you pause. All of the electronic bits in your computer degrade over time, most especially those involved in the display. Operating hours are probably not the most important consideration, but they are certainly not a moot point.
What Rob said on finding hours, post CF-28 models report total hours in the bios.

Ahh I may beg to differ I think only MK4 and up post 28 models show hours, at least on the 18s and 29s ;)

You can also find the hours by going to start, all programs, panasonic then click system information. Scroll down to read off total of use. I, of course, am speaking of 19s and 18s which are the only ones I ever touched.

I stand corrected. I've only had two CF-29s and never looked on the MK-2 for hours. It's not there! They are reported on the MK-4.

where are you located? I usually put north of boston as my location too, being in melrose.

anyway, if anyone still needs to find out how many hours are on a machine(assuming it has the original hard drive), toughbook or not, simply download hdtune

    http://www.hdtune.com/

    the free version

install it, open it, and go to the health tab. at the bottom it says "power on time" and a number. that number is hours. cheers.
