    Thanks for the great HOWTO.

I already tried it on myself as windows 7 came out, but I only manged to get the touchscreen going.

Now: I only had problems with the misc driver
One of the unknown devices was the hardware for the misc driver, when I tried it with the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller device I got a bluescreen on reboot

    Used it on a cf-18D (mk2)
And downloading the drivers only took about an hour, getting it all installed was the larger task :)

On older models, only two "unknown" devices show (the Hotkey driver and the Tablet Buttons driver). For some newer models, the misc driver may need to be installed to an additional "unknown" device that shows in the Device Manager. At least one some models, the "Device Instance ID" for the misc "unknown" device is "ACPI\MAT0021" (under Details).

Updating the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller is also reported to do the trick on other Toughbook models, such as the CF-Y2.

Just completed the installation of win7 (with SP1) on my CF18 mk4 touchscreen, all working fine. As far as I remember I used:
For wifi lan Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG: vista driver from Intel,
For sound SigmaTel C-Major Audio: XP driver,
For video Intel R915GM/GM, S910GM: sp34749, did not try the vista upgrade driver, google sp34749 or try vista upgrade driver for cf18 mk4/mk5,
For hotkey plus: the vista upgrade driver (tablet button drivers of 1st post are for digitizers not for touchscreen, for the 2nd unknown device I used successfully the hotkey plus driver for CF18 mk4/mk5 vista upgrade),
For gps fix: the vista fix, the XP fix works as well, did not try win7,
For screen rotation: the XP sofware, maybe vista will work,
For software keyboard: the vista software,
For all other devices and softwares: the win7 drivers for CF19 mk3 as per 1st post.
All the above, more or less in same order as 1st post.
So far all looks working as before under XP: Wlan, sound, touchscreen, tablet buttons, screen rotation and auto rotation, gps, did not try/install the SD card reader yet... Much faster and confortable under win7! Maybe because of the new installation, but it really worths the move.
Not sure I am 100% accurate but keep trying it will work. The tricky part for me was to understand the 2nd unknown device ACPI\MAT0020 was the hotkey plus device: vista upgrade hotkey plus driver for cf18 mk4/mk5 touchscreens works (before I tried the Wacon driver with no success, so uninstalled it). I did force the Misc driver as well, as per 1st post but harder... not sure it is mandatory as win7 was telling me I had the best driver?
    Thanks so much RCX!

Pedro, the next time you can't figure out what the "Unknown" device is take a look at the Driver install sheet and on the far right it tells you what it is.

Ive been trying this method to get win7 professional on a CF-19.

i did it with no issues with a 500gb HDD.

Ive now installed a 120GB SSD and i can go through the whole process but i still have the second unknown device in the device manager.
as far as i could tell everything was working. then i tried to update the sound driver and it stopped working. I uninstalled it and restarted and allowed windows to provide the driver (this is what i have done before) and its working again but now the Fn+F4 or Fn+F5 shortcuts dont work.

im going to do the whole thing again and avoid the sound driver thing as it seemed to work before. the only thing i dont get is why the second unknown device wont go away. either the tablet buttons driver doesnt work or something else is replacing it?

also ive never managed to get the bottom side to side scroll on the mouse pad to work but thats another less important thing.

also i couldnt work out exactly what sound card i had and i didnt really understand the realtek part of the install. These bits im pretty sure i just avoided before and i had no issues.

how can i get a full spec of my model ?
    CF-19CHB06BE

and lastly, i used to be able to press the key button on the front and it would bring up the logoff/task manager screen (as if pressing control+alt+delete). but now it doesnt. it seems to make sense that if this is related to the tablet buttons driver then the remaining unknown device is still the tablet button driver. So if this is the case do i need to just go through drivers until it works?

    any ideas? thanks

Get the hardware ID for the unknown device.
Tablet PC buttons driver is MAT001F
    Hotkey driver is MAT0019
    Misc driver is MAT0021
    TPM 1.2 is IFX0102

Looking thru the device manager on my CF-19 Mk2 with Win7 I don't see ACPI/MAT0020 listed in any hardware ID.

A quick Google search shows that to be the Hotkey Plus Driver. Some Mk's and operating systems show that driver and a Hotkey Plus Manager Application. Other Mk's don't show that driver but, have a Tablet Buttons Driver and Tablet Buttons Manager Driver. I think those names may be interchangeable. I have no idea which driver from which Mk would work. I think I'd try the Mk1 Vista driver first.

i got the vista CF-19 mk1 tablet button driver

copied the .inf file to system32 and ran the reg file and it has got my Fn shortcuts working but the unknown device is still there. Im wondering if this is why the buttons on the front dont work?
the only thing is i dont know what driver is for those buttons. i wouldve thought tablet buttons but obviously not.

i never had this problem before but i think that was before they updated all the drivers.

Did you install the Tablet Buttons Manager Driver? I don't know if it has a setup.exe or if you update it from the device manager.

i followed the guide. the setup doesnt work so i manually copied the file and ran the reg file

    Tablet Buttons Driver
    Open the Device Manager
At this point, there should be just one "unknown" device
Right click on the unknown device and select "Update Driver"
Manually select the driver using steps similar to the following:
Choose to browse your computer for driver software
Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
Click the "Have Disk..." button on the next screen
On the "Install From Disk" dialog, click "Browse"
You will want to use the folder containing the driver MeiTBtn.inf (found in the top level of the driver archive file extract; do not use the one in the amd64 folder)
Wait for the driver installation to complete; if the install fails, try the other unknown device
    Manually copy meitbrc.dll to C:\WINDOWS\system32
Run MeiTBSet_STANDARD.reg to update the registry

then i restarted to laptop. I think it suggests it after altering the registry

    I have installed Win7 on a cf-18 mk4.

To make things as painless as possible, make sure u do the following:

Follow all the instructions in order,
make sure u get all the cf-19 k drivers as per the file list.
the only problem I had, and it seems I was not the only one, use the video driver posted by radek, the "Intel_R__82852_82855_GM_GME_Graphics_Controller__Microsoft_Corporation_-_XDDM_". My video card is a 945gms, but it seems to work.

When I tried to do thisthe first time, I made the mistake of trying to use cf-18 winxp drivers, and it all ended in tears. Make sure you do everything in order, because I found out the hard way that I couldnt update or uninstall the panasonic msic driver without getting blue screens.

The other issue that many people seem to have is the tablet buttons and display rotation.
Install the correct drivers in the correct order as per page 1 to get the tablet buttons to work
Make sure video rotation is ticked under the settings for the video driver.

The good news is that the trusty old cf-18 is loving windows 7, handling simple non lge picture related tasks in office 2010 with ease.

    Ciao Windows XP tablet,

Thank you for your report. Glad to hear that you've got it working. Is your display touchscreen or digitizer?

82852/82855 drivers should not be used on non-82852/82855 video adapters. If the system has a 945 GM, you use the standard 945 GM driver from Intel (which will also eliminate the need for all the rigmarole hacking the 82852/82855 driver install).

Both in the download instructions and the installation steps, the qualifier of being for Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics devices is listed. Perhaps that's not worded clearly enough? Only the oldest of the CF-18 series has the 82852/82855 adapter; the adapters in newer ones have graphics adapters that are much better supported under Windows 7.

The biggest problem is that with a bad driver setup, you won't get 1024 x 768 resolution and will instead be stuck at 800 x 600.

    Have fun! :)

I have a CF-18 DHAMBKM touch screen model. I followed lal the steps precisely, and I still have some problems.

I cannot get the WLAN to function. The network adapter has an exclamation mark in device manager. When I try to locate the driver in the WLAN driver folder, I find the NETw5s32.inf file. I then get a list over several possible network adapters. Which one should I choose? Which network adapter do I have? Is there a way to find out?

Further, I can't get the display rotation utility to work. I suspect this is due to the fact that the video controller entity in the device manager has an exclamation mark beside as well. I have tried to stick very close to the manual provided by rcx... but obviously not good enough. ANY tips / or advise deeply appreciated, I don't want to throw my CF-18 in the garbage... PLEASE!

Further: Altohough most of the tablet keys work, the display rotation key does not... And there is no sign of the the stylus pen calibration tool with 16 dots...

Please, can somebody suggest where I should start searching? Or do I have to do the whole driver installation procedure again...?

    • Is your video adapter an Intel 82852/82855, a 945 GM, or something else? If all of the other tablet keys work, the issue is likely with the video driver setup.
    • Did you try running Windows Update to see if it detected anything for the WLAN driver? (As per the first post, don't use Windows Update to update an Intel 82852/82855 driver.)

As to the video adapter: I simply don't know. But I followed your rigmarole steps closely, and all of a sudden, the video adapter "mounted" correctly so that I am able to rotate the screen through Win 7 (Right click, Graphics options, Rotate). In the Video adapter settings in Device Manager, I have to instances of 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics controller, as well as one (disabled, as per instructions) instance of 945GM. So I suspect is a 82852/82855 version.

I checked the Windows Update as per your instructions, and I hid it.

The wireless switch does NOT work. It doesn't work properly through the program menu either.
The tablet keyboard key does NOT work.
The display rotation key does NOT work.

One thought: I have an American model - but I selected the MUI language version for all drivers that I installed (I live in Norway and have selected Norwegian keyboard setup). Could this be the problem?

For everybody with non working tablet buttons, if you have a touchscreen model you most likely need the "Hotkey plus" driver and manager, the "tablet button" driver and manger won't work on non-digitizer models.
I altough had to install the "Display rotation tool" for touchscreen models.
(I used the XP SP3 versions)
Now every button does what it should do (CF-18 mk2) :)

Hi guys, I follow carefully every step-by-step instruction!
    My CF-18 Mk1 have a new life!
Everything work perfectly and the notebook seem faster and more reactive than before (XP tablet).

Just a question, there's a method for create a driver-complete installation disk starting from the right installation (like using nlite for XP) with Windows 7?

Thanks in advance for the answers and thanks for the great guide!!

Hello, could somebody tell me exactly WHICH touchpad/touchscreen/mouse driver that should be used on a TOUCHSCREEN (i.e., not a DIGITIZER) model?

I followed the above steps closely, and I am "almost there", but my touchscreen behaves improperly. For the moment, I do not think it is broken.

Thanks for that it did not work so I had to wipe it and start again, I did all this and it did it again, but what I have found now is that the screen will rotate on the front button only when I have the math input screen starting when windows loads up, if I disable the math input screen on startup then my front panel button to rotata the screen does not work.

All I do now is close the window on startup and all works ok, but would love to know why it will only rotate the screen on the front panel button with this configuration...

Guys a Fanstaic Forum for information on the Toughbook...

I would like to try to my CF-18 Mk1 but :

Maximum memory 768 Mo in the CF-18 FAQ
Hard drive is with IDE so it is possible to install sata hard drive ?

So i think you have CF-18D and not like me CF-18B .

    But thanks ;)

With only 768 memory it will run slower and no you can not put a SATA hard drive in this caddy...sorry

My CF-18 mk1 has 1280 MB memory. So 768 is NOT the maximum amount of internal memory.

The 768mb comes from the factory published limit when the Mk1 came out, not even sure if 1 GB sticks were available then. I have had my Mk1 with a 1 GB stick too so I know it will work.

    Hi, new user here.

Good thread - used this to get Windows 7 running on my CF-18.
I then upgraded it to Windows 8 Release Preview with the option to keep all my files and settings. It didn't really like that, lots of Panasonic Misc Driver Not Available Errors.

So I did a clean install and followed these instructions again. ALMOST everything is working fine.

When I first did the upgrade I had the option of using the on screen touch keyboard that comes with Windows 8 (good on screen keyboard btw) on both the desktop and start screens. Could select it from the settings menu.
However, after the clean install I can use it OK on the desktop but not on the start screen (where it is really needed as that is the touch interface).

I believe this may be tied in to the fact that the front bezel buttons don't work. When I tried to install the meitbman driver it said that it only worked for 32 bit systems and that this OS wasn't supported.

Anyone had any luck getting them working in Windows 7 or 8? Are they ACPI Fixed Feature Device (off the top of my head) in device manager?

New to this forum, so I apologise if asking stupid questions!

I own several CF-18s for a certain specialised purpose. I recently traded up to some Mk4 touchscreens and one Mk3 touchscreen. The Mk3 is a CF-18FHHFBBE. The Mk4s are all different system models, but have the same basic features, one being a CF-18KHHEBBE. All the machines have replacement 160 GB HDDs and additional RAM up to 1.5 GB.

The Mk3 is in reall good condition and the previous ower has tried to install Windows 7. Hence, my gravitation to this thread. Now, I have cloned a seperate HDD from another M3 [now sold] and all functions work with the XP HDD. But, with 7, I have awful screen display and note that Display Adapter is "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter". Also, three listed "Other Devices", two listed as "Unknown" and one as "Video Controller".

I therefore tried to follow the "display" parts of post no.1 initially and evntually downloaded "infinst_autol.exe" file version 1.1.47.0. Seemed to installed OK, but does not seem to make any difference )i.e. I can't find it), so clearly I am doing something wrong.

With regard to everything else, the sound is there, but not good. The front left side lights and switch works (wireless) but wifi still works when switched off here. On right side, brightness light lit, but does not work. Four other buttons do not work (so no keyboard or screen rotation when in tablet mode). Finally, mouse works, but no touchscreen.

So, any help [keeping it quite simple please] would be very much apreciated. If I could get a fully functional CF-18 on Windows 7, it would give me a lot more scope for my future plans for these machines.

    Many thanks,
    Aerovision

Welcome to the Panasonic Toughbook Forum
What you need to do is download all the drivers first from the links from the first page then do a full install of W7. When it comes to unzipping the drivers you really need to watch where you unzip them. One of the most important driver to install is the Misc driver...this driver is needed so you can install a few other drivers (see page 1)

Thanks. So start again is the suggestion?

Can someone just tell me exactly which display / video drivers / files I need to download from Intel please for the Mk3 and Mk4 Touchscreen CF-18?

    Many thanks,

The touchscreen and digitizer models are going to use the same chipset for the same mark.
    Mk1,2 and 3 use a Intel 855GM - UMA up to 64MB (chipset/intergrated graphics)

    The Mk4 and 5 use a Intel 915GMS - UMA up to 128MB (chipset/intergrated graphics)

So you need to look for what will work best for those chipsets.

Install 855GM Series Video Driver on Windows 7 - Tutorial

windows 7 driver Intel 855GM - Google Search

windows 7 driver Intel 915gma - Google Search

There are a few links for you to read. You may also need to read up on "how to force install a driver on windows 7"

Also for the 915 series there are modded drivers available for better performance.

You may have to look at the older releases and do some reading on this site to find them.

Thanks to toughasnails and ADOR for your help so far.

Drivers all downloaded (most CF-19 Mk.3 ones are the UK versions, for info) and going through the installation process, but stuck on item 3.

Followed the points to the letter, but at point 9, instead of getting an "Update Driver Warning", I get "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date. Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller". There is no override option.

I am pionting at c:\util2\drivers\newmisc, which is where newmisc.inf unloaded to.

I am trying to install this on a CF-18K, touchscreen, Windows 7 Professional.

As I read that the Misc Driver is critical to everything else, I have ground to a halt. Help please!!!

    Kind regards,
    Ian

Yes the Misc Driver is critical to everything. Are you installing this from the device manager ?

Unless I am missing something, it doesn't look as though the released version of Windows 8 will be an option for the CF-18. Microsoft is enforcing the NX bit check, and the CF-18 chipset/bios doesn't appear to support it. I'm sure someone will eventually find a hack around it, but until then, it appears we are dead in the water. Anyone know anything different?

Following all the help, I am nearly there with my CF-18K touchscreen. Win 7 Professional running. Slow to load up, but can probably live with that.

Did not do item 23, as used the sp34739 for my 915GMS video card. Could not do Customize Tablet PC Buttons as not in Control Panel (probably as this is a touchscreen). But has installed and is ticked. Oh, and hated the Bluetooth driver, so removed it and using the generic one, which is fine for my needs.

So, problems - front buttons not working (except brightness ones) and soft keyboard not there at extreme left [or right] of screen until I select it from the taskbar.

I have now downloaded Win XP drivers for Hotkey Plus, Display Rotational Tool, Touchscreen, Panasonic Handwriting App, (& XP Software Keyboard, GPS & SD). But what do I first uninstall and what order do I install some / all of these please?

I have also downloaded the Wacon Pen Tablet 508-2a. From all the posts (yes - read the lot) not sure whether this is the better or worse option.

As I said, so far so good - but would apreciate some expert opinions before uninstalling / installing as detailed above.

    Many thanks,
    Aerovision

Update: CF-18K Hotkey Plus XP drivers don't load for 2nd unknown device. There are no "Vista Upgrade" drivers for Hotkey Plus! HotKey Plus Vista drivers for CF-19K load OK, but don't work.

I then tried the Wacon Pen Tablet 508-2a (with Tablet Button Manager / Driver back and Hotkey Plus removed), so exactly as post no.1, minus Bluetooth driver. It worked straight away and now front buttons all working fine!

So, I have a touchscreen machine (CF-18K) with the Panasonic digitizer drivers and the Wacon driver, which now seems fully working on Win 7 Professional, with all updates installed.

Next to see if Memory Map will install on it and talk to a Bluetooth "keyring" GPS.

Thanks again for this really useful forum!

Hi There, it's my first post on here. I stumbled across the forum whilst searching for info on my CF-18 mk5 CF-18NHHZXBM a bargain purchase on eBay last year for just under £300 with only 2200 hrs on the clock in a as new condition. since i've had it i've fitted a emissive Rubber keyboard, and tried to fit a WWAN pcmcia card.... but it wasnt untill a while after i noticed the touchscreen had stopped working (was when i first started playing with WWAN). after a bit of playing with drivers i decided on a re-install, it was as this point i discovered this thread and i must say it is a pretty amazing guide.

i just felt i should add my experiences on a mk5:

Sound card, failed to install the driver, so i used the vista driver from the panasonic site (for a cf-19 i think) this worked fine :)

Wireless switch utility failed to install (for factory WWAN??)

Lan Driver i left alone as win 7 had found a driver and updated once win update running

WiFi i used the intel Pro Driver for vista from intel's site

    Bluetooth skipped as not fitted

PC info viewer installed but with and error, on running error window pops up "c:\....\setdiag.exe the application has failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is incorrect....."

    dmi view installed and working

video driver, tried 945 driver without luck. then tried the intel 915 from there site which stated incorrect version of windows, then used the link to driver on HP's site earlier in this thread but ran as admin in xp compatibility mode as in thread (poss this would have worked for prev driver) this worked fine have functioning driver :)

as of yet no luck with the touchscreen though, the cf-19 driver wont install, tried updating the mouse driver with one from Fujitsu site but lost touchpad. tried the Wacon Pen Tablet 508-2a driver, this enabled all the tablet features of win 7 (including the tablet buttons all six now work, orig only brightness and lock worked)

does anyone have any other ideas or drivers i could try? i know that many will say the touchscreen has failed but i can't understand why, it was working under xp whilst the cf18 was on my desk, then last week (hasn't moved from my desk) is wasn't although i hadn't tried it since playing with sierra wireless drivers.

is there anyway to run diagnostics on the touch screen? may help to mention that touching the screen anywhere or running a piece of card under the edge has absolutely zero effect on the cursor position.

apart from that i have a fully functioning mk5 running windows 7 :)

what do u find in the device manager under input devices? there should be a HID-device and a USB input device or similar. One for ur touchpad an one for ur touchscreen. if not, reinstall the wrong driver.

there is a hid device but is from the wacom driver i installed (for digitizer not touchscreen) and the panasonic touchpad/touchscreen driver. although with just the later i have no working touchscreen. ideally i need a way of monitoring the port on which the touchscreen connects to too see if it's trying to communicate, does anyone have details of what model, type of connection the mk5 touchscreen is?

    Many Thanks, Jon

i just tried it as a long shot, touchscreen didn't work before or after... i am wondering about just re-placing the touch panel with and after market one, as they can be had for a fraction of the cost of a new one

Well just managed to do this on my Mk2. Much respect to rcx for the write up, how you managed to work through finding that procedure is quite amazing. Everything worked in the end although it took 4 goes of the process from start to finsih before I got it all working.

However, Automatic rotation was working and now it isn't, I think the sensor is FUBAR. Anyone know how to fix it. It doesn't respond to the magnet tric although the screen off on the left side of the pad works fine. If it's difficult then I'll probably leave it as is. Is the sensor on the MOBO or is it mounted to the case - I haven't had one of these machines fully apart.

Anyway thanks to rcx for that, was thinking of sticking with XP even after the drop dead date but Windows 7 is so much more tablet friendly.

Have also got my CF-51 Mk3 working with Windows 8 which is great and much faster than XP. Now to get Vista or Windows 7 working on my Itronix Duo Touch.

    Cheers
    Andy

Just finished Win7 Ult install on my new CF-18 Mk1. Took a few runs getting the video driver to take, but it's all good now. Thanks to rcx for the write up and all those that contributed.

With the demise of Windows XP I loaded Windows 7 onto my CF-18mk2 and followed the instructions, the only gotcha was the video driver, took me two tries to get it right, I now have everything working as it was under XP with a factory restore disk. The first thing I did was image my drive.

could anyone advise me how to get the dam video driver to install on my cf-18F digitizer, I followed instructions to letter in 1st post, everything working as it should all buttons ie fn+front panel buttons, only thing im stuck with is the dam video driver,, and obviously the rotation wont work till I solve video driver
after following instructions all goes well till the end process of driver, in device manager it just keeps refreshing (blinking,as if trying to install driver over and over)
also in device manager ive got 2 exclamation marks for video controller and video controller (vga compatible) but no display adapter section in device manager
someone please help me to resolve this issue, pulling my hair out (well whats left of it)

    thanks in advance
