    -Good morning-I'm a new kid on the block/w a MK1 CF-29-

I've been using HP PCs for about 11 years and strictly for enjoyment--no business, although I've sold a bunch of Jeep stuff on Jeep forums-

Please forgive me if I ask questions about things that are normal to you--

I've already found MANY differences between the PC Keyboard/functions and the CF-29-

I hope you'll accept my membership !and I'll be glad to answer any questions you might have about me-

First question--How do you control the touchscreen size-No I got this laptop from a relative--no manuals and I've looked in most of the ref's

On the PC--it's ctrl and +/- keys--don't work on the toughbook !

Second question, although I have set mine up for Wireless, on my AT&T modem for my TV/DSL/internet-what do you suggest for an "express card"/PC card-without paying $50 bucks a month---use or not-

    This CF-29 ref's F12 for LAN ???

Thanx for any info good/bad I plan on using this CF-29 on Sierra treks and Nv desert travel--thanx

    welcome!
check the 29 faq and you may want to look in the cf29 thread as well

what do you mean by "control touch screen size"?
as far as the ctl -/+ keys: are they not working at all, or do you mean for "controlling the touch screen size". They won't do anything for the touch screen, or the size of the display. ONly for zoom inside of various programs, like any other computer.

fn+f12 will control the brightness of your keyboard (if your keyboard is backlit)

and there is no express slot or pci-e on the mk1.

you may want to look at a sony erricson gc89 or sierra wireless 860 pcmcia cards.....

OK, when I log on a forum, like this one--the IMAGE is "ZOOMED" out, how do I reduce it, so I don't have to keep moving the image from right to left, just to read a sentance. ??

My CF-29 has a PCMCIA Dbl slot and a PCMCIA FAX MODEM--init-

OH, then yes, ctrl and the +/- keys should do it. I use firefox, and never had a problem with zoom with it. I know it sounds silly, but make sure it's the ctrl key you are hitting, and the +- keys by the backspace key.

I never just assume posession of a laptop and start using it. I reload the OS and put in my own progs/tweaks, just so I know exactly what's in there.

And yes, double pcmcia slot on the side, and the modem may be pcmcia standard (I don't know) but it is not a PCMCIA card.
Your only real choices for wwan with an MK1 is with the OEM sled, which I know little to nothing about, a pcmcia card, or a usb dongle. I"m using a sierra wireless 860 right now, unlocked w/voice, on tmobile. It runs at 3g when you use it with Att/cingular, but only edge when with tmobile. I'm currently experimenting with trying to be able to use a pci-e card in a usb adapter for 3g wwan.

Does your unit have the antenna on the top left?
    What's your full model number.

-Heh Heh, whata Monday huh ? the Ctrl +/_ keys have no effect--OK, I can live withit-

    Nope, no antenna-CF-29CRKGZKM-

I read about a Sierra Wireless Lightning 305 AT&T GSM USB card and I'm favoring AT&T, because I've already gotta account with them for DSL internet--here in Nevada--no satellite internet--

I just was asking if you guys had a favorite aircard for the -29 !

    Thanx for your help-

Cool. a USB stick is certainly easier. I naturally assume that everyone wants to take the pita road, like me. I went for built in becuase anything else would get destroyed.

    CF-29CRKGZKM-
Pentium M 1.2GHz (Centrino), 12.1" Transflective touch screen, 40GB HDD, 256 MB RAM, 56K/LAN, FDD, Intel PRO Wireless LAN, WIN XP

I've never seen one of the transreflective screens in person, only pics. How's it look?

Well it's pretty "touchable" and bright enough to see outside, not quite as bright as my HP PC, but It works great in my jeep-

I've gotta RAM No- Drill vehicle mount on order and we'll see how it works in my '08 JKUR-

I'm calling AT&T to find out what there cost is for thatUSB aircard-

Seems like they want $25 bucks a month EXTRA for a 2GB acct, which isn't outrageous, but I'm gonna wait onit !!-

I've got some Delorme TOPO CDs (5-CD USA)comming and I'll try them first !!

Scroll down, at the bottom of the browser window set the style to "vBulletin Default Style". If that doesn't work, try the other styles.

    Ah, a CF-29CRKGZKM.

    Model Number:
    CF-29CRKGZKM
    Status:
    DISCONTINUED
    MSRP:
    $3,847
Description: Pentium M 1.2GHz (Centrino), 12.1" Transflective touch screen, 40GB HDD, 256 MB RAM, 56K/LAN, FDD, Intel PRO Wireless LAN, WIN XPes.

You are limited to 800x600 screen resolution and you will probably not be able avoid scrolling side to side. If you zoom out the print gets really small.

    cool. take pics.
totally check ebay. I just scooped up an sierra 881u usb dongle for almost nothn. I think I saw one for $17???? They also have a gps receiver built into them. Then just sign up without a contract, pop the sim in, and be on your way.
$25 for 2gb isn't bad. do they just slow down service for overage, or charge you more?

I tried delorme, but it didn't do what I needed. Streets and trips (2007 w/2011 map data) works great on my MK1 for certain navigation, and I have Iguidance for directions (like a regular car gps). Iguidance reads street names and what not. the poi selection sucks, but he rest of it is top notch.
I've also used McGuider, which is ok, but the maps are out of date.

-Heh Heh, I'm not to interested in the city streets/locations, I'm just getting the Delorme 5.0 for the topo maps--same as google and I can use them without an aircard-

The AT&T new aircard is $29 bucks, but how can you signup without a contract ??

Here's the jeep I'll be usingit in-

    Nice whip.

To sign up with a new line on a device that you have, you can call 611, and give them the sim card # and iemi # and they can activate it.
If you don't already have a data line for the aircard, signing a contract might be a good deal, especially if the modem is new 3g/4g for that price.
You may also want to look at using your cell phone, or getting a cell phone, android perhaps, and just using your phone as a wifi hotspot. That would be my most recommended suggestion, however would cost more/month.

Also, look into Goops for google earth. It looks like something you might like for off roading (and it's free and legal, so far as I know).
