I have a cf-29 mk3. My girlfriend was surfing when it blue screened. After a restart and the Panosonic title screen it reads: "A disk read error has occurred Press ctrl+alt+del to restart", which yields same message.

I did get it to boot up once after giving it a firm rap with open hand over the HDD area. After about a half hour another blue screen with same results.

I can hear/feel drive moving at the Panny title screen for a few secs.

I have wanted to upgrade the drive for a while, I just want to make sure that this is indeed the problem.

A search of the forum for this error didnt turn up anything of great use this time. Thanks to every one for looking.

Sounds like toast to me. :(

    For a replacement I'd suggest a Samsung HM160HC

Very unorthodox but sounds like you don't have much to loose - put your drive in a plastic bag and leave in the freezer for an hour. When back to room temp give it a try.

No, I thought it was crazy too but this fix worked on a drive over a year ago and it's still working.

You can boot with a Windows XP disk and run the recovery console, then run chkdsk /f this will try to fix any bad sectors and move data to good sectors then you can restore any mising system files and maybe it will give you some time to backup any critical data before you replace the drive. On the other hand it may just keep on working once the bad sectors are eliminated.

    Thanks again to all.

My TB is a refurb and did not include recovery disks. Is it true I will need these as well to install a new drive?...even if I have my own copy of XP and COA?

I installed xp without the recovery disks and it works fine, but it takes more work to install all the drivers individually rather than pop in the recovery disks and install everything in one shot.

With original, genuine Panasonic CD-29 Series Product Recovery CD-ROM sets being so readily available, both here in BST and on ebaY™, why waste all the time and effort "cludging together" non-OEM-Panasonic Win XP and all the necessary Toughbook drivers and utilities, just to save $25-$35 ???

I have Mk2, Mk3 and Mk5 CF-29s and bought the correct Panasonic CD-29 Series Product Recovery CD-ROM sets for each.

I believe the investments more than paid for themselves.

Not having the proper discs lets you have plenty of time bonding with your machine.

W/O discs, love is not the feeling you have as you continue to get the driver manager to get rid of those exclamation points and get the hot keys/touchscreen working. I gave up a long time ago on my touchpad trying to get it to scroll even with the disks. Wireless mouse easy button pressed.
