    I have a CF-18
It has a 40gb hardrive on it,
I believe it a MK2, but not sure...
    http://toughbookcentral.com/decoding-panasonic-cf-18-model-number/
According to the decoder above it is a MK2
    CF-18 DH
    As far Antivirus program
    What is the best program?

The laptop had Avast! Free Antivirus on it, I removed it.
I am was running Norton 360, but I removed because It was slowing the computer...
    I have AVG free Antivirus
    Avg any good?

Is the Microsoft Security essentials any good?

I use Avast and AVG on all my computers. I was a Norton user but I too found that it slows it down a lot...never tried MS essentials before

I used AVG for years without incident. Now I run security essentials and, of the freebies, it's considered the best. A true heuristic AV is always going to be better. The ESET and Kaspersky offerings enjoy wide support. Of the two I believe Kasperky has the lighter "weight."

Stay off the pr0n sites and you'll be fine.

On the hardrive, I think it IDE ATA-6
What would be best upgrade it can handle?
Would bigger hardrive create more heat?

    Hello,

I recently upgraded the hard drive in my CF-18 MARK 1, the drive I went for was a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320gb PATA drive which works fine in my CF-18.

If you do go for one make sure its a PATA drive you order and not SATA otherwise it'll not work. (My limited understanding of hard drives is PATA drives are the same as IDE - SATA is a more modern hard drive system).

    Bob.

Yes I would back everything up first. Windows 7 will take a lot of work to get it running. There is a few threads on this, I will get back to you on this but I would stick to XP myself.

    FOUND IT
    TEST site:forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic - Google Search

This is how we search on here....type what ever you are looking for and this in google site:forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic

Anything that I have read is that you cannot run 2 antivirus programs at the same time. It seems that they are like brothers and sisters when we were young; just can't get along.
Try googling "running 2 antivirus programs at the same time".
    Good luck

What I have found is running NAV 2011 and MS Sec Essentials will be okay. Running both on a CF-19 MK IV with 64 Bit Win 7 now for quite some time and they get along well with one another. XP is okay, but Win 7 32 Bit is a great system and yes, does take some work to get all of the drivers in and you will lose some functionality with buttons and some others. If you download the drivers from the Panasonic along with the install instructions, follow it to the tee, you should have no problems. I have a CF-18 MK II and I would switch between Win XP Tab, Win XP Ful blown, and Win 7 32 Bit, on all HDD's that were quite large and worked fine. I don't believe Win 7 64 Bit will work on the 18's due to the processor not having dual capabilities for it like my CF-19 MK IV. Good luck! One last thing, when you get Win 7 installed and running the way you want, burn the disk image at the point you have all of your software installed. Big time saver if your drive goes out or it gets ill! Do your regular back-ups and save them so if the need ever arises to re-install, your ready to go, pop in the systems restore, burn the saved image, run your restore back-ups, have your computer back up in less than 2 hours, instead of much longer with complete install of all Panasonic stuff, your stuff, back-ups, etc.... Good luck!

Depends on your space needs. The biggest Samsung is 160gb. WD is available up to 320gb. I have several Samsung 160gb that work great.

As stated in the F.A.Q the Samsung drive works great. I have them in my CF-18's , 29's and 51's..7 in total and never had any problems.
Below was taken from mnementh CF-29 FAQ that he started, there is a lot of good stuff on the first page .
but I also have a WD Black 320GB drive in my CF-52 but its faster than the rest of the toughbooks I have and can handle the bigger drive better. I find the bigger drives on the older toughbooks slow them down way to much

One option on having two anti-virus is you can always have certain ones inactive on a usb drive. I keep spybot search and destroy on my usb drive and up date it about once a month. It helps for rescue and just having a second option.

Not sure if that will work, what are you using for backup software? I use Acronis True Image Home 2010 . I have the new drive that I am going to use in a external case then I run Acronis which puts a image of that on it and then take that drive and put it in the caddy :D . I am not sure that it will boot to this external 1.5 tb drive  or even find that image.

Well all you can do is try it ;) . I have tried to use the USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Cable for 2.5-Inch adapter but no go and xp would not load the drivers for it, thats why I always have a spare external case handy. Let me know how you make out

I tried to back up the old drive, but will not copy some files,
Windows said it could not copy/open.
If I try to install with out the files, then use a restore CDs
I had HP Compaq XP computer before, I still have the recovery disc,
    Will they work any computer?
    Or Buy the CD online?

I am not sure about the HP Compaq XP disk but others have used the Dull disk and it worked. Do you have a external cd-rom ? Is your CF-18 MK2 a touch or Digitizer ? You will need to know this if you look for the OEM restore disk. The digitizer disk are the hard ones to find.

Update, I forgot the password for the site, after long search I found the password,
Well I updated the toughbook to
WD Scorpio Blue 320 GB PATA drive. little pricey at $104.00
I used the WD acronnis version and cloned the old drive.
All I had to do was hook the new drive with enclosure, hook to the toughbook, then I used the WD version of Acronnis and I cloned the old drive.
    thanks...

Believe it the same for all models of CF-18.
Cool! I didn't realized they made any CF-18 with dual Touch+Digitizer. I have a CF- 19 Mk3 that's dual and it looks like a CF-18 Touch with the smaller pen slot.
