    Hi ALL,
I have just received my CF-28 (CF28PBJ12FE) with windows 2000 Professional installed. There is a sticker on it which states it was made for XP,so a bit confusing?.

A couple of questions. Each time I boot the system,I get three messages that New Hardware has been found,UGX and asks to continue the installation.I have no idea what a UGX is and under Device manager it is shown as unknown. If I unistall it ,it comes back at each reboot.Anyone know what it is and how do I get rid of it?.

I would like to install a WIFI pcmcia card and have read the posts concerning this.As I dont want range other than in my house to my router,is there a card I can install without having to mess about installing an antenna?
    Thanks
    John

UGX is a bluetooth device. At least it is for a Cf 29.

    Try installing bluetooth drivers.

    Welcome to the forum, John!

A standard PCMCIA WiFi card doesn't require external antennas; they're built-in. The downside is they hang out the side of the laptop, and you have to leave the side door open for it. There are some older PCMCIA WiFi cards that used a small whip and were short enough to fit inside the case under the door, but I believe they were Wireless B only.

We usually do a different mod; we replace the MODEM & NIC Mini-PCI cards (install under the HDD cage) with a combi MODEM/NIC card and a WiFi card. The Atheros Wireless G models are very popular, but you WILL have to install some sort of antenna, even to be able to use it 20 feet away from your Wireless AP. You CAN do a quick & dirty install of one of the generic flag antennas inside the case; there's a plastic side cover right there where the MODEM/NIC jacks are. Installing one there will usually work within 60-80 ft, and it's right where you'd be installing the new cards anyways.

Otherwise, you're going to be looking at some soldering to do the CDPD antenna WiFi hack. There's plenty of detail on both procedures in the FAQs and Resource stickies at the top of the forum.

Thanks Shawn, will have a look inside and see if there is any hardware for bluetooth. Will probably remove it if there is ,as I dont anticipate using it.

    Thanks Mnem,
Will open up and familiarize myself with the interior.I have read the WIFI posts and will probably follow the good solutions posted.I have just tried a Netgear usb wifi dongle, but couldnt get it to work.it also seemed to cause the system to periodically reboot for some reason. There was a message on the screen ,but it went too quickly to read. Not a potential long term solution as i dont like things hanging outside the case.
When you say you replace with a combi modem/nic card and a wifi card,is it necessary to have the modem/nic component as well or could you just use a wifi card.Excuse the ignorance.

I get fairly good results using the 3COM wifi PCcard, the XJack model with retractable antenna, part number 3CRPAG175. The PC card slot door will close with the antenna pushed in, which also acts as a switch to turn off wifi. Open the door and extend the antenna to use wifi. Reception is OK for use around the house with a router nearby.

You can get them on Ebay for around $10-15

Welcome to the nut house John. There is very low probability that Bluetooth is present. If it is you will most likely find it in the "secret" pcmcia slot or a mini dongle in the USB port. It has been a while, but I don't recall anyone here installing BT anywhere else in a CF-28.

There were a few of us who were using the internal USB bus hack to install a USB Bluetooth dongle and placing it in the plastic side cover along with the MODEM/NIC jacks. As you can imagine, reception was VERY directional.

    hi Guys,
I have just removed the battery and hard drive and under the HDD there seems to be two PCMCIA slots with cards in.one appears to be the modem and the other I dont know.
Also under the battery there is a card with what appears to have a socket for a Cell phone Sim card on it.Presumably this for GPRS?.
What would the second pcmcia card likely to be.possibly a buletooth card.As the system says I have 3 x UGX ?.Any ideas?

First if you haven't already done so read this:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic/210510-cf-28-f-q-read-me-before-posting.html

Then go here and download this service manual:

    http://modly.net/servicemanuals/CF-28M-Service-Manual.pdf

It is for the 600mhz CF-28 but most of it still matches your 800mhz Toughbook. It will explain what and where each of the card slots are and hopefully it will help you out.

    Bob

If you ask, someone here may have or be able to help you find some restore disks, with all the correct drivers, for that model...
Also if you search this site you will find all the drivers for your toughbook:

    Toughbook File Source

And lastly,,,, welcome to the insanity :twitchy:

I suggest you take a look at the stickies where you will find answers to all of these questions. Under the hard drive you will find the modem and the NIC, under the battery it sounds like you have the RIM modem useful only for the daughter board if you want to install a GPS. Please read the ***READ BEFORE POSTING*** sticky, its there for a reason.

    FYI
I just installed a Intel 2915 abg in a beater cf-28. The antenna is from a cf-29 and glued to the inside of the plastic piece under your left pinky facing to the side.
I grabbed the drivers from a Util2 pkg. I copied UTIL2 and then ran dpinst32.exe.
    Worked pretty good for M$.
3 walls and thirty feet from the wireless.
    Totally FWIW.

Jeff i wanted to put it in the lid. BTW I'm typing this on it. CF-28MCFGADM 128 ram.

    Genltemen,
Many thanks for your replies.Just for the record, when I join a forum ,I always read the stickies.I have learnt a lot already by doing so and from the posts to this thread, which I duly appreciate. Some of the speak is way above my pay grade, but I am learning and trying to understand what is being said.
I obviously not found all the answers I am looking for,or am too inexperienced to interpret it correctly.I have downloaded manuals etc.
My main issue at the moment is that each time I boot the system,it says it finds new hardware ie UGX(which I now understand is probably bluetooth.)It pops three windows each asking for drivers.Form research and posts I dont seem to have a blue tooth device,I have unistalled these in device manager, but they keep coming back. How do I prevent this from happening?
I have read there is selector switch bank on the motherboard, but it is not clear if this enables one to select bluetooth or not.?

Thanks for the welcomes to the nuthouse!

Myself I would put XP Pro on this and once you updated to SP2 it would load the drivers for the bluetooth (UGX). I run into this same problem with my CF-29 (SP1) and it never went away untill I updated to SP2. I do know the restore disk (4 cd set) for the MK2 has XP Pro and W2000 on it.........I think :D

Thanks,I dont have XP Pro and it came without restore discs,so not an immediate solution.I will keep it in mind .I just wonder why if it does not have UGX installed, why does it think it does?
