Hello all! Long time no see... errrr... or type! How is everyone? Well, I hope!
I sold a CF-30 to a good friend of mine about 4 years ago and it *accidentally* upgraded to W10... He hated it! (Who doesn't?) So I told him to send it back to me and I'd reformat it and fix it all up for him. It's been in the box for over a month and he has been bugging me to get on it. So I unpacked it last night, copied all his docs and pics off and reformatted it.
My Screen Brightness wasn't working and I knew it had to do with having the proper video driver installed. I needed to come one here to "refresh" my brain a little as I haven't built a Toughbook in years. This is strange since I have about 20 downstairs in my basement of various models... Most of which are still valuable and work well. Anyway... I needed to get the Vista Video Driver installed and now all is well. I also needed to fix his touchscreen as it was only partially working at best. By the time I finished loading stuff... It had crapped out entirely!
So a lot has happened since I moved to VA in 2014. I rented a house, built my dream home on 12 acres beside the Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg, VA... I fell down the stairs and severed my Quad tendon going to my knee (THAT was fun!)... My house flooded due to a bathroom faucet breaking (manufacturers defect) and it pumped water all over my hardwood floors... It flooded the basement also. Good thing I had just about everything stored in sealed plastic bins (especially all my Toughbook stuff!)... Then... I got a divorce! My Trophy Wife wanted to run a few laps with someone else. So... If you have a hot sister that needs fixing up... I'm your guy!
I've been focusing on my job a lot lately and doing well at it. I have enough projects to last me 20 years! I STILL need to build my shop in the basement... That's on tap for this Fall. Then I can unpack all my stuff and get back to playing around.
I rebuilt this Toughbook for my buddy... It needed a few things also aside from the tscreen fix... And I think I have the bug again. So you guys may see me around more.
Just wanted to stop and say hello! I miss the camaraderie here! You guys are about the best group of people on the planet and I have always been proud of being associated with you!
Rick

Welcome back..sorry for your woes..
I am up and down with lifes challenges. I have not touched any Toughbook repairs in about a month. Too many mental tepairs going on. -
"So... If you have a hot sister that needs fixing up... I'm your guy!"
no hot sister ... she's 9 years older than i am and i aint no spring chicken .
why am i reminded of a saying i heard more years ago than i care to remember :
"the only thing all my relationships have/had in common is/was me"
man ,
a severed tendon is painful and slow to heal .
right now i am looking at a possible *situation* in my upper left arm .
i tore something up in the bicep or i have a "green fracture" of the bone .
i will know more when my appointment with the imaging department comes up .
for the '30 ...
i have loaded the crap on a '30 the hard way ... that's what got me here in the first place .
(and that is what they refer to as a "mixed blessing" ...
it's like watching your (now) ex-wife behind the steering wheel of your shiny corvette as it goes over a cliff .
)
a restore disk is the easiest way .
that said , welcome back . -

My guess it won't take you too long to get back in the swing of it. Nice to see you.

heh heh heh .
i recall when i put the run on a guy that was chasing after my niece .
my brother-in-law thanked me ... he was too close to it ... he would have been the *bad guy* .
ehhh ... what are crazy uncles for ? -
Welcome back Rick.

Well... I officially feel older now... I just noticed that I passed my 10 year anniversary of being a member here back in May. A lot of posts and a lot of fun over the years! Plus a lot of cool stuff built!

Here are two random for fun questions..
What are your answers?
How are girlfriends and Toughbooks the same?
How are ex girlfriends and Toughbooks the same? -
I will start off..
A Toughbook with a gps and a girlfriend both always tell you where to go.Kent T likes this. -
and an ex girlfriend and a toughbook with a gps know where you've been , hence question number one .

They are fun to play with!
I can wear them out and they always come back for more.
I enjoy them and turn them on often!
I have many of them in different types.
How are ex girlfriends and Toughbooks the same?
They come in generations... I am presently on Gen2
When you see the newest one come out, you lose interest in your old one!
I have about 20 down in the basement... Um... Wait...Kent T, ADOR and toughasnails like this. -

" I have many of them in different types."
sort of like this ? :
i'll leave it to you to make the connection between types .
how are they the same ?
you'll always remember the first one you ever had .
most of us get them second or third hand .
we were the high bidder .
someone took pity on us and tossed one of their less-important units our way .
we got one because someone else *cleaned house* (not the same as immediately above) .
the (major/important) parts are pretty much in the same place between models .
accessories are expensive and sometimes difficult to install .
one makes the mistake of thinking that there are no differences within the model line .
ports are well engineered ... will perform adequately for a reasonable length of time .Last edited: Jun 20, 2017Shawn, Kent T, ADOR and 1 other person like this. -
Rick, you've sure had to overcome adversity. Hope you get better and healed up. And I am happy as can be to see you back. Since you've been gone I wound up scoring a cheap CF 30 in nice shape for my own, and now have a CF-C1 on the way. And in working life went from one CF 31 to two of them.
