I am trying to locate the right version of XP (or revision, whatever you call it) that works with our Panasonic COAs. If anyone has an ISO of a version that works, please pm me. I've tried 3 different versions I have here, none of them seem to accept the Panasonic key on the COA, though (2) of them are purportedly OEM versions... I don't want to have to buy yet another copy.

    Thanks very much.

PS I cracked open my case today, it's easy. I moved parts between two machines and it went very very well.

Did you try the key that came with either of your CDs? You should have 30 days to activate it. When you do go to activate it, XP give you the option to change your key which should allow you to use the one on your machine.

I will give that a shot right now, thank you. I'll update when I've tried that.

That didn't seem to work (as in it never gave me an option to change the key at activation...)

I just got XP installed on mine with the COA. I pulled the i386 folder from my Dell so it is an OEM version. That one worked. Two others I tried (update XP with the 28 COA and another manufacturer's XP).

I fought with it for about a week before I found the right version to use.

I ran the WINNT install app after booting the C: drive to DOS - used a WIN98 boot floppy from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and that worked finally.

I then activated through M$ with no problem.

How I got my copy, I took a Compaq xp disk and used N-Lite to pull off the XP operating system from the disk. This took out all the Compaq stuff. Try using N-Lite . It may solve your problem. I used it to copy it over without removing anything from the program.

On the first page it asks you whether you want to activate over the internet, on the phone or log off. Select over the phone. Hit next. On this page there is a button towards the bottom to change the product key.

Hi... the machine with the COA is an MK2 (800mhz)

    Thanks

ZaZ, I had a feeling it was something like that. I'll try to reload soon, and see.

Would it be software piracy if (someday) I get a set of recovery disks for our machines, and then made copies available to people with COAs? I get confused about M$ protocols.

I think it might be, but screw microsoft. The license was paid for, so I don't see a problem in using it, regardless of how the CD was obtained (Which for all of us Toughbook people, was probably an OEM CD laying around and using the license on the bottom of the toughbook).
