Gents,
To preface, I'm not a computer guy. I know enough to use my computer but I don't know a lot of the technical jargon.
I got referred here and was told that y'all are pretty squared away WRT the information I need. I recently bought a used CF28 on ebay for $222. It needs a hard drive and caddy, and I'll need to swap in a DVD drive. Maybe not the most smoking deal, but hopefully I didn't get ripped off.
My goal is to use it in my truck (Toyota Tacoma) for off-road trips for navigation, mapping, file storage, trip management and journaling. I've got a Delorme LT20 with Street Atlas USA 2008 and Topo USA 7.0. I'm pretty rough on my equipment, I've gone to a Casio G-Z'one phone because I kept destroying cell phones, I ruined two laptops (Dell Latitude and Compaq notebook) in Iraq from dust and heat. I don't intentionally abuse my stuff, I guess I just am like a bull in a china shop.
I've booted into the BIOS management screen and am looking at all the information about this computer. Can you guys help me decode what I've got, whether or not it should work for what I need, and help me figure out which parts I may need? I've been searching and reading, and have learned the size differences between the 600, 800, and 1ghz caddys, copied the hard drive install sticky, etc.
Here goes:
Model No: CF-28PCJGZPM
Serial No: 2AKYA01265
Bios Version: V2.00L10B
System Time: 22:05:51
System Date: 01/19/2008
System Memory: 512MB
Primary Master: None
Secondary Master: None
NumLock: [Off]
Touch Pad: [Enable]
Touchscreen: [Enable]
Speaker: [Enable]
Internal MIC: [Enable]
Display: [Simultaneous]
Environment: [Normal Temperature]
Any help with decoding what options I have, etc and what parts I will need to look for will be very helpful. All I can tell so far is that it's an 800mhz PIII with 512MB RAM.

The best thing to do it enter your model number at this website:
http://www.config.toughbook.com/ -
Should also have a 13" touchscreen, built in ethernet, and it came with 256MB of ram on the board (So you can upgrade to a total of 768). Check out the next page in the BIOS, and see what options you have in there. Some goodies may have been added in, but it's unlikely.
Did it come with a CD drive? And are all port covers there?
If so, you didn't get too bad of a deal... but that hard drive caddy is gonna be expensive, and we don't have a secret source to get them super cheap... if you're lucky, you can pick one up for $70 without a drive in it. -
OK, I found a decode site for the model number that lists the basic options, www.config.toughbook.com.
P - Pentium III 800mhz
T - 13.3" XGA Touchscreen with standard keyboard
J - 30 GB HDD w/ 256 RAM
G - Floppy Disc Drive / Modem / Ethernet
Z - No integrated options
Q - Dual operating system - Win2K / XP
M - Destination North America
I guess what I need to do now is find a caddy and a hard drive, and figure out what optical drive I can use to switch out the floppy. If you guys have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them. Of course, I'm aiming for budgetary concerns, but I can't do a lot of homebrew work myself as I know nothing about computers. Soldering is about the top of my mechanico-computer skills.
Man, you guys are quick! I didn't even realize I had any replies yet before I posted again. Thanks!
Modly - All the port covers are intact, the screen isn't damaged, AC adapter included, some light scratches on the external casing. No DVD or CD drive. -
I've got no social life, very few friends, no girlfriend, etc... So that means I am here alot.
Also, if you don't have a CD drive caddy, you'll need one. The floppy caddy will not do you any good towards a CD conversion... (If you find a way to do it though, let us know... but we've tried). -
You need one of this, try to make an offer now: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270204685212
