I know this isn't a mod question but I could sure use the help. Just picked up a nice CF-31JEGAF1M with 7,800 hrs on it and Heartland sent me the image backup disk to load the factory settings. Install was a dream, Windows 7 Professional loaded without a hickup, but I went to Windows Update and got the dreaded "Check for Windows updates" outlined in red instead of green. The first time I ran Check for updates I got Error code: 8007000E. Checking online I found all kinds of possible solutions, including advice to delete all additional languages. Several more attempts at checking no longer give an error code, Windows update just checks on and on with no updates. I went to the Microsoft update page and downloaded the latest Windows update installer but that did not work. Automatic updates at 3:00AM is turned on and I'm hoping that tomorrow I'm find a zillion updates to install. Right now, the earliest updates I have are from 2011 and Check for Updates shows zero updates downloaded.
Anything else I can try?

See this website for a list of updates to manually install to fix the slow searching.

Unfortunately that's a temporary solution until the next patch day (October 11), but IIRC if you install the rollup KB3172605 (which will be offered in Windows Update) that contains the longer term fix for the Windows Update agent.Shawn and toughasnails like this. -
Yes! Thanks for the Help! Loading the newest update
KB 3135445 did the trick and I'm now downloading 218 Windows 7 updates. Both of the 2 replies really saved the day!Shawn likes this. -
Yes, I see what you mean, gotta be into this for at least a half hour now and only up to 84 updates installed. Into it this far so I'm going to see through but will certainly try the update pack in the future. Thanks for the suggestion!

sometimes that POS windows antivirus is turned on along with the av that you may have installed ...
turn the windows av off permanently and then disable your av and spy/malware checker .
by default , the windows av is turned on .
i use avast free ... do not try the trial upgraded version .
i did not look through the links listed but is that "updates-on-a-stick" listed ?
it is slicker than deer guts on a doorknob .
if you can swing it , get a ssd (128 gig will be ok) .
it makes an appreciable amount of difference in the speed of doing things .
there are several used units on cheese bay ... i have bought three from different sellers and did ok .
watch out for the samsung (and other brands) that have been customized for dell as well as other manufacturers ... the "migrate tool" (clone tool) from the manufacturer will not be usable .
(i don't worry about that , there are plenty of "blind transfer" (clone) programs out there) -

Updates started about 11PM and all 228 finished sort of "installing" at 4:30AM. Right after #228 a message flashed onscreen announcing that 98 updates loaded successfully and 130 failed. The CF-31 turned on and off several times while rebooting and configuring the updates. 2 additional updates appeared in WinUpdate after the reboot and this morning I get "no important updates" in Windows Update.
You're right CWB32, I'd just put the free AVG (not Trial) version oj before the updates so that probably slowed things down, but I getting updates now (10 optional so far this morning) thanks to all the replies and I will read or reread all suggested links this morning.
Just one more quick question: do I need to go into each individual driver now and check for updates, or were all drivers updated during the massive update download? -

pretty much all the drivers and stuff are upgraded ... there are options for the video side in the windows updates .
the rule of thumb is that there are some drivers that you do not want to upgrade unless there is a problem (say adding a new version of hardware) .
some drivers one can get from the windows update are best left alone ... they can gum up the works ... they are not good ... especially when it comes to the panasonic stuff .
maybe someone can make a "serving suggestion" list ? -
Appreciate all the help toughasnails and CWB32. Running smooth since the massive 5 hour initial update, no problems adding devices - found my old printer once the USB cable went in without even asking for a disc or making me go to the HP website.
Time to thin the herd and retire the CF-29 (been in the closet since XP passed away) and use the Vista CF-30 as a backup until April.
Eventually, I'll get brave enough to try switching out the keyboard on the CF-31 to an emissive backlit keyboard I have - broke the tiny ribbon connector locking clips switching out the CF-29 and had a heck of a time getting the keyboard ribbons securely connected.
All set to go, I'll stay away from the drivers. -
I recommend making a drive image of the fully updated win7 install.
Here is my favorite tool for jobs such as opening the cable latches.

Thanks Shawn, would never in a million years thought to use an orange peeler and just look at it tells me it would be an excellent way to release the clip instead not watching a Ytube vid to see how it's done instead of assuming the clip comes out - wrong!
