    Hello all,
I have experienced a problem during a upgrade of one of our C-28's. It is a C-28, 800 mhz processor with 248 mg of RAM. The system had Windows 2000 installed and I went to do a upgrade to XP Professional. The upgrade went fine until the reboot. The monitor will only display in 4 bit mode and will not let me, or windows, to set the resolution to the optimum level. The highest color quality was 4 bit and the screen resolution is set at 800 by 600 pixels. The right monitor is displayed in advanced tab. I tried to search for a updated driver. Windows could not find a better driver. The proper adapter was displayed and I tried to update the driver...again without success. I am at a loss as I have done several upgrades and never encountered this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I searched for the updated drivers via the hard drive and the XP install CD.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

I've done a little more research and discovered that the drivers for my Intel 830M Graphics Controller are not signed. This cannot be good. The help screen says to go to windows update to try to correct the problem. Can anyone verify this or recommend another method to obtain a signed driver? Will installing Service Pack 2 help? Thanks for any guideance.

The graphics drivers are unsigned... Go ahead and install them. Some of the drivers you must install are unsigned.

SP2 may help... But I have never heard of this...

So when you first instaled XP... A box popped up that asked you to redo the resolution... You said YES... Then you right clicked on the desktop and went to the properties/settings and set it there and it still is at 4 bit? I've never seen 4bit resolution. I have 16 & 32.

    Not sure what happened there.

I had a similar situation with an 800 where the display properties went through the standard dialogs for the increase in resolution, but would never change.

After a reboot it all fixed itself for some unknown reason.

EDIT: This occurance however, happened during an upgrade to W2K not XP.

    Thanks for the responses.

Toughbook...Yes to your questions. During the update windows did state that the drivers were unsigned and I checked yes to install them anyway. Windows did ask it it could reconfigure the monitor settings to optimum level...I checked yes but they stayed the same. I also did a reboot but no change. I still have only 4 bit and cannot change the pixels, either. I've completed many installs and updates and have not seen this, either. I am trying Service Pack 2 now. Will I have better luck with a clean install. Im avoiding this since there are programs installed that will be a PITA to reinstall.

    Thanks again for any help,

    Kevin

I have seen this happen with upgrades before. If I remember correctly, it had to do with a registry problem. The registry was using an incorrect driver for the display and only a clean re-install would correct it. I suppose someone familiar with the registry, and with a registry editor, they could probably fix it that way, but I usually don't like messing with registry problems and just do a clean install. Because you went from win2000 to winxp, and the display works but not as it should, and most video drivers for 2000 are not used for xp, I would lean to that being your problem. I do hope this helps and makes sense.

I just went through this with my 800 two weeks ago. I was pulling my hair out. I never did find resolution. I finally just did a clean install rather than upgrade. It worked. If had just done the fresh install from the start, even with those PITA programs, I would have finished the project in half the time I spent screwin around with the upgrade. I think Doobi is right about the registry...XP is a PITA when it comes to that.

    Update:

Thanks for all of the input. I installed Service Pack 2, then did a power down and reboot. I had to leave for a bit and thought I had the problem licked. I returned and found only the background...No icons, no task bar...No nothing. I could not shut it down properly so I had to pull the plug and reboot. It goes right to the background screen. No Panasonic logo, no Windows XP logo, nothing. I cant even do a system restore. What are my options? At this point I'll be happy to do a complete and clean install but I seem stuck in this mode. Thanks again for any and all help,

    Kevin

    I'd do a clean install personally, but for the hell of trying;

    http://modly.net/cf-28/P/XP-Video-P.exe
    http://modly.net/cf-28/P/XP-Video-revised-P.zip

Try installing the first one first, and do a manual update just like we do with the touchscreen (Device Manager > Display Adapters > Whatever is listed), go into the Driver tab, update driver, and select where the driver installed itself to. Mine reads "Intel(R) 82830M Graphics Controller-0".

Also try updating the "Monitors" as well, to "Digital Flat Panel (1024x768)".

Can you get into bios (F2)? Can you try booting in safe mode...tapping F8 right after powering up? If none of that works I dont know what to tell you other than clean install...stick the disk in and see what happens. Sorry.

    Modly,
I downloaded the 1st driver file you sent and then selected windows update to check for the driver. It loaded and EUREKEA...I have a clear resolution. Not sur if the windows update found it or it was your driver. I checked windows update first when I had the problem and it did't find the update. Thanks you all soo much for he help. I am learning so much.

Thanks again to everyone who responded.
