Most of you probably don't know or care, and that's ok. I just got curious about mine because according to the label, it has "Apple HDD Firmware". Now don't get me wrong, it has been working fine.. But.. I'm still curious if there's a different firmware image for this drive that might be better!

Unfortunately there's no firmware on the Hitachi website for our perusal. (Hitachi Tech support confirmed this) but they did say that if I was having problems with mine, they would try to set me up with different/better firmware.

So.. have any of you guys had occasion to upgrade the firmware on yours?

Grav's right in the short description; firmware is any software that resides in permanent or semi-permanent storage on a device; usually used as the first "bootstrap" software for a device, so that it can talk to other devices and operate on its most basic levels.

Almost every device in a computer has its own firmware; video cards, sound cards, NICs, hard drives, etc - even the Motherboard itself has firmware - we call it the BIOS. The difference is that it is designed to be NOT alterable or only alterable as a technician level service procedure - not as part of a software patch or automatic update for the OS.

But yeah, the short version is - think of firmware as the BIOS that's built-in to the devices on your computer.

Thankfully, certain devices such as wireless modems have upgradeable firmware. As mnem said though, most are intended to NOT be messed with because what they put into the firmware is simple and basic enough they got it right the first time.
