Ok so my CF18 is coming along... Got a temp power arrangement using a CF-28 adaptor I have spare with the cut-off end of the dead CF18 power adaptor joined to the CF-28 DC plug... Wifi is working and it's sucking down Windows updates.

I have noticed that the speaker is really bad. The master volume is only set to half way yet any time the system outputs a sound, it sounds like the entire speaker cone has become detached and just flaps around. I took the speaker/memory cover off yesterday (nice to find the RAM is very easy to get to) and didn't see anything immediately wrong with the speaker. Is this a common thing with the CF18's (maybe the CF19's too?)?

I'm sure other people have had this occur (!) and can hopefully tender some advice on getting the speaker sorted out.

    Craig.

See! I told you that will gonna work without damaging the good one thats my master power suply at home for toughbook.
Anyway, check the speaker cover maybe it is dent down to much and when the speaker vibrate it touches the metal and the sounds is creepy. Dismantle it but be careful coz it has an O ring seal and then push it backward to have a gap. Or if you have a buttom cover of cf-29 that has still an speaker on it. Its totally a match. How do I know that? Its another story to tell. Lol

    Very common issue Craig
    Look for a replacement speaker
    These speakers blowup real easy
Find a thin replacement , as the back of the speaker sits on the add-on ram module
Or find something to limit speaker travel so it won't limit out

Only the speaker not the housing. Just to clarify.

Oh ok lame, well I have the same problem as this thread it sounds blown out so Ill try bending the cover back out and if that doesn't help its probably a bad speaker and Ill use the one out of the 29

thanks for all the tips on this. I'll take the speaker and cover apart carefully when I'm back in Adelaide on Sunday (just started work so on train until Sat afternoon). If it's no good I'll track down one from a CF19 or try to repair the one I have.

BTW the CF18 has Windows Xp tablet edition (2005 date) so it'll need to spend a day pulling down patches (slow since my net connection is shaped to 64 kbps until the start of April).

I fixed one by using a small precision screwdriver and I pried up the metal grate/cage that the speaker is housed in. A poor design on Panasonic's part actually. The speaker may not be blown... Just reverberating against it's cover. Try prying it up a little it may fix it.

Teo... Good to hear about the speaker itself. I just happen to have an spare CF-29 speaker that Stiffnecked gave me a long time ago. I'll keep that in mind!

    Yup -

Another "tool" for such things can be made by taking a large safety pin and bending a hook in the end - get the hook as tiny as possible by gripping the least length of the end (like the last 1/16" or less if possible) as you can get a grip on with your pliers. Only bend the hook to 90 degrees, or it can break.

I tried bending the cover up but it seems like the speaker is actually attached to the cover? Or is mine just smashed up that bad. I was worried because when I started prying up it seemed like it was going to tear the speaker in the middle area

Why not just remove the speaker from the grill and push the dent out? only two screws holding the speaker.

That's what I will be trying initially. The cover is easy to remove (since it's the RAM access cover too).

I tried this with mine, and discovered that the speaker appears to be attached to the grill fairly securely with some sort of adhesive. I stopped when it wouldn't come off easily, as I didn't want to damage the watertight seal. Ended up sticking a dental pick under the grille from the outside, and using that to pull it out.

That's what I thought when I opened it up. I had no need to take out the speaker since I had already straightened out the grill but it looked like it had a secured membrane to block moisture from the speaker. So I didn't go further. I would imagine that it would be a .50 cent part from Heartland (+20 shipping)...

If the speaker is similar to the one in a 28, I have two extras, think I paid 10 bucks......
