Just got a used CF-30CQS92BM, WinXP. On front right side of the screen, looks like it has the GPS receiver (the square inch size "bump"). I opened it with screwdriver, it does have a small device in it, but there is no mark or model number on it (it has a black line attached to it). And in Windows XP, there is no software that mention anything about GPS. Any idea? Thanks.

    Some more updated information:

I went to the BIOS, and it says "GPS - Auto".
Then I went to the Windows Device Manager, in the Ports section, it says:
    BT Port (Com 10), and also the same for port 11, 12, 13, 14, 20, 21, 22, 6, 7.
Communication Port (COM1), and also the same for COM2, COM3
Novatel Wireless Expedite HSDPA Status Port (COM23)
    Pinter Port (LPT1)
RIM Virtual Serial Port (COM15), and also the same for COM16.

    1) Which software do I need to install to see the GPS siginals? (say, get my latitude and longitude).
    2) Do I need to sign up for any cell data plan in order to use the GPS? -- I see on the left side of the keyboard, there is a slot and there is a dummy AT&T sim card there.

    Thanks!

you need to download WinFast Navigator. It's what I use to see how my GPS is working. Yours should have GPS in it...at least when it left the factory it did.

I assume you mean the "TOOL for Windows (the file size 1764 KB one)". I tried it (called Leadtek GPS Monitor Rev 1.1). But looks like not working.

-- which port do you use in the "setup -> Data source"? In my laptop, it only allows me to select port 1, 2, 15, or 16. I tried them one by one, and the software doesn't complain anything but I don't see any change in the UI output.
-- and which "Baud Rate" do you use?

    Thank you.

It should be Port 3 at 4800 baud. To set that baud rate in Navigator you click on the rate, it starts with 9600 so you have to scroll UP to select 4800. Hit Connect then you should see NEMA data in the upper right window, lots of numbers and commas.

If Port 3 is not available, there may be a port conflict. Go into the BIOS. Write down or take a picture of current setting settings on each BIOS page, then use the last page to Get Default Values. Save and reboot, then look for the GPS on Com 3. You can also use the Terminal program to snoop the different ports and look for NEMA data.

you can try Franson GPSGate as well - it won't show you data but it does a really good job of hunting down GPS streams from various sources.

    Still no luck. :-(
On start up, GPSGate tries to scan all ports, but it finds nothing. (BIOS is default setting). I also tried advanced setting. For COM3, it says "Comm port does not exist. No data is coming in". For COM4 (under "virtual com"), it says "running OK! No data is coming in".

You can also try GPSInfo, downloadable at the USGlobalSat web site. It too will scan for a port connected to a GPS. I have no experience with internal GPS, but I have never had GPSInfo or GPSGate fail to find a connected GPS. I can't help with starting an internal GPS. For general GPS viewing you can't beat VisualGPS. These are all free programs.

... hmm.. does COM3 exist in the Device Manager? Are there conflicting IRQs? (IRQ7 is COM3 IIRC)
