After a hard day at the office I noticed that the ACPI in my CF-18 is running at 67 degrees C - The HDD is at 46 C

No effect on performance . . just wondered what is the average tolerances are for these types of devices

I used to get memory chips fail in Dell machines when they ran too hot to due the bad design layout . . and lame fans / thermals etc :p

Quite often due to heat expansion of socket etc I guess

We've discussed this before... I think everyone gets a little worried at times.... But they have a failsafe of sorts that when it gets a little too hot... The CPU throttles back to 80% power. (Check ou the BIOS! It will allow Auto or HOT) Think about all the police cars that have these installed... Yes they have AC... But they also leave them parked for long periods and then start them up and go. I would imagine it takes a 130F Toughbook a while to cool down.

I wonder what temperature triggers it though... Anyone know?

Hard drives typically spec running up to 55 or 60 C so you should have no problem on that score.

I remember one day we had flown into Dallas for a meeting at the actual airport. Every once in a while if you are working on a "special" case you boogie around the country in one of the smaller planes. There are 4 of us total. We get finished with the meeting, have a chat in one of the lounges for a little bit then walk back down, then outside to the tarmac to leave. That dumb pilot, if that's what you want to call him, thought we were getting onto another plane when we were finished. He had gotten a cart, it looked like a cart you use for food. Put all of our belongings onto this cart and just sit it there on the tarmac all by itself. Now, you have to think about this for a minute.........We walk outside expecting to see our airplane, and there is nothing but a cart with our stuff on it and one of our agents Toughbook on the bottom just soaking in the heat coming off of the tarmac. I wont bore you anymore about the rest of the story, but you should have felt how how hot that case was on that computer. I can only imagine what the temp was inside. I was dying to know, but was not in a situation to where I could have found out.
Sorry about the long one story! I am sitting here in of the A.P.D's rooms waiting on someone, bored to death. That's Atlanta Police Dept BTW.

Let me see what other thread I can write a book on

    Were you flying SouthWest Air?

They're the "We're not even #2, so why bother trying?" airline...
