Can't believe this topic hasn't been covered but I searched the forum and did not find. Here we go:

I've got a CF29 that came with a small adapter that says output 16v, 2.5amps.
Works fine cos I don't know any different. But apparently this is the charger from something else and I can put more juice in to the CF29 to charge it faster? Is that right?

The reason I ask is because I'm looking for a car charger. A cheap universal one will do me. But do I need 80W or 90W? Given that this seems to work with 2.5A, then 80W would seem to suffice.

    Any thoughts.

Also, anyone know what CF stands for?

    Andy

The CF-29 series OEMs with a 5.0 amp power adapter.

You can't go wrong with Lind; but I also use OEM Panasonic, Targus and a certain "twin-power" (110V AC/12V DC) IBM adapter, as well.

I've read that it stands for "Computer Factory;" but I cannot verify that to be a fact.

If the brick is small it sounds like the factory charger for a CF-18 or T/W series toughbook. With the lower amps it just charges the battery slower.

okay, this is a bit off-topic, but when i use a charger with the same voltage but with higher amphere, can that damage the laptop ?

You can use as low as the 3.75A charger (that comes with the CF-19) for the CF-29/30/31...

If you use a 2.5A "mini" charger, then you will SURE have problems with the charger being WAY to stressed and could overheat or even worse, catch on fire!

Master blaster: My understanding is that its the computer/battery that "requests" the charge it needs and the charger will provide what it's "asked" for up to the limit it can provide.

So in short, no. It will be like driving 30mph in a sports car. - An analogy too far?
