How to load Windows 7 on your CF-30 MK1 Toughbook

UPDATED ON 3/18/12

I know that there is another thread out there about this but I htought I would do this write-up about my experience for others. Feel free to add on or correct and we'll sticky it somewhere... Perhaps Creating a W7 Stick for all models... As I noticed there are several already floating around for various models.

First (obviously) back-up all of your important data that you will want to transfer.

Second… You will want to update your BIOS (if it isn’t already) to CF-30, MK1 Vista. You want this BIOS version...

BIOS v1.01L20 Embedded V1.10L11

Get it HERE! (As a matter of fact, get ALL your drivers here. You want drivers for an MK1 running Vista EXCEPT the touchpad! (See below!)

CF-30s came with either the XP downgrade BIOS or the MS Vista BIOS running Vista. Upgrade to the Vista BIOS. Download the PDF from Panasonic to specifically tell you how to do this. If you decide at a later time to go back to XP… You can always reflash to downgrade again to XP Pro.

The BIOS is easy to flash. I would flash it BEFORE you attempt to install W7... When you still have XP installed. If not, flash it first thing after installing W7!

Once you have flashed the BIOS to Vista you need to go into the BIOS and disable GPS is you have it installed. If you forget to do this you may immediately see the jumping mouse cursor and you won’t be able to click on anything. If this happens... Exit the installation, reboot going into the BIOS and disable it. I disabled everything just to make sure that I would not have any issues when loading W7. Then I went in and turned them on as needed to load the item. However, I think GPS is the only thing you need to worry about. Leave the GPS turned off until further notice as the GPS Registry driver MUST be installed with the GPS disabled in the BIOS.

Once you load W7 and get it to boot up you can either find the zipped files on Rob’s site or you can have them pre-downloaded. You want all the drivers for a CF-30, MK1 that runs Vista…. You want all the VISTA files NOT XP Pro. The ONLY exception is for the TouchPAD driver.... Dowload the MK3(K/L) Windows 7 driver from Panasonic's site HERE! As a matter of fact... You can get ALL drivers from here... It will just take you some time to download if you don;t get the whole thing in one zipped file from Rob's site.

Look on Intel's site to get the latest chipset driver! The video driver in W7 is a more modern version than what Panasonic offers…. So there is no need for that file either. So… I installed everything the following way and order;

1. Sound driver – Unpack it, go into C:/Uti2/Drivers/Sound and click on the setup file. Reboot

2. Hotkey driver – This needs to be installed via Device Manager and should be the bottom of the “Unknown Drivers” that show in Device Manager. You unpack the Hotkey driver to C:/Util2/Drivers/Hotkey… Then update the 2nd “Unknown Device” (At least it as on mine) Reboot

3. Unpack the Hotkey Appendix and then go to C:/Util2/hkeyapp and run the setup… Reboot

4. Unpack Hotkey Settings and then go to C:/Util2/hkeyset and run setup… reboot

5. DOWNLOAD and unpack the touchpad driver for a CF-30(K/L) MK3 touchpad driver. This should be the ONLY driver that you will need that is not specifically for an MK1 running Vista as all the prior drivers have been for the MK1, only for Vista instead of XP Pro!

6. Unpack the Touchscreen driver. It will tell you that you are going to unpack it to C:/Util2/Drivers/tscreen…. Let it go. Run the setup. Now comes the calibration. If you go into device manager you will see several items pertaining to touchscreen… “Pen & Touch”… “Calibration”… AVOID THESE FOR NOW! Go into “Tablet PC Settings and choose to calibrate there. If you calibrate any other way, at least in my experience, the calibration will either be WAY off… Or will not take upon a reboot. The calibration is different than what you are used to… There are no red crosses… There are four sets of black ones in each corner but the process is the same. Tap the center gently and only momentarily and move to the next highlighted cross. There should be 16 in total… This is a MUCH better calibration method than Panny’s. I think this is native to W7 but am not sure at this point… I have only now started to play around with the additional options.

7. Install your WLAN driver. If it is Intel… Make sure that you go to Intel’s site to get the latest for your model. I am running a Ubiquiti ABGN card so I installed that for me.

8. Unpack the GPS Fix to C:/Util2/Drivers/GPS and then go into that directory and click on the only file there. It is a Registry Entry that need to fix the Serial Ballpoint issues so you won’t have the jumping cursor. NOW… Reboot, F2 at boot-up and set your GPS to auto. You should now have full functionality of your GPS on COM3. (At least on mine it is!)

9. Unpack and Common Driver to C:/Util2/pcommon and run setup and reboot.

10. Go to Toshiba's website to find the most recent BT Stack for your Toughbook and install that.

10A. Unpack and install the Misc Driver. A lot of the drivers that follow this will NOT load unless you install the misc driver FIRST!

11. Unpack and install Handwriting App as described above

12. Install the Battery Recalibration (Brecal) as described above.

13. Install DMI as described…

14. Install PC Info as described…

15. I have tried to install the Loupe utility without success…. But I tried it on my old setup and not this one. If you feel the need (I never used it myself) to install it and get it working… Post back and I’ll include it here.

The only thing that shows on mine as not set up is the Pseudo Tunneling Device or some such thing that I don't really need. I just disabled it. If anyone has more info on this... Please let me know. (I think this was the fingerprint scanner on my original CF-30!)

As of this time I cannot get my fingerprint scanner to work. I think it is because I originally installed the incorrect software for it and now am having a devil of a time getting rid of all the old files. The new (hopefully correct) program that I have will not install until I remove the old one and the old one won’t remove few of the DLL files… So I’ll need to go in manually at some point… But I never use my fingerprint reader anyway as it is so much of a hassle. So it is low priority for me now.

That’s about it… If anyone has any questions… Please let me know. This setup works 100% for me.

I can say that the touchscreen calibration tool under Tablet PC Settings allows me to calibrate this touchscreen so much more precisely than ever before… But it does act differently… You’ll see. There is also a pull-out from the side that you can enable any time you want to use handwriting or onscreen keyboard. There are also gestures that you can set up… Flicks they call them…. So you can just flick your screen instead of using the slider bar on the side or the up/down arrows.

All in all… Pretty cool and I’m loving it so far.

Rick the Bluetooth program is not from Panasonic so they will have to get it from Robs download.

I'm not sure how much stuff you have installed after the finger print reader but the windows 7 system restore works allot better than XP. It might fix your problem if you can roll back. It might just be me, but it seems that windows 7 is allot harder to change and erases files. I don't have one to work with.

Yeah... Windows 7 is a pain in some regards. They seem to have made it more idiot proof and taken away the easy access to the files that knowledgeable users tend to use... Though I am learning where they all are.

Keith,

Welcome to the forum!

The MK3 already has W7 support... So you just need to follow the links in the stickies to get to the right Panasonic site HERE! Register for free and then... Look up your model and download the needed drivers. I WOULD start with the Inf, then video, then sound then the rest on the list as posted. The MK3 (At least some versions) have W7 support.

I have installed Windows 7 on my CF-30 MK3 and it works perfectly. I will qualify that by saying I installed the X64 (64 bit) version of Windows 7 Professional. Some of the drivers furnished by Panasonic will not work properly or even install as they are the 32 bit versions. NO BIG DEAL. First, the touchpad driver will not work. No sweat as the native win 7 driver works just fine. The touchpad comes up as a USB Mouse. The video driver will not install. Again, 32 bit version. The native win 7 driver works in all aspects as far as I can tell. The first time you run Windows Update, it will grab the 64 bit version of the Intel graphics driver and install it. The touchscreen will also work just fine in the tablet PC mode. Actually, I think it is much better than before and as previous noted in Toughbook's post it is much more accurate. I noticed a slight delay in the touchscreen reaction with the 32 bit version but none with the 64 bit version. You will find you now have the Tablet PC functions available. A bit odd I must say never having played with that before.

Two FYIs here. First, in the MK3 the processor is the SL9300 which is a 64 bit processor. I have had no problems running the 64 bit version of Windows 7.

Second, the "Pseudo Tunneling Device" mentioned above is actually the "Teredo Pseudo Tunneling Device". It is used with IPv6 and is needed if you want to use the Homegroup feature of Windows 7. The driver for this is normally installed when you install the drivers for the WLAN or WWAN.

Rusty... Thanks for the info on the tunneling device. Lot's of info and references about it on the web but none as concise as you put it ... Thanks!

I disabled Homegroup as I needed to network my Win XP stations together and Homegroup was getting int the way.... At least for me. As soon as I disabled and rebooted... I found all my network and printers...

Rick, can you post this as a sticky on my site as well under the CF-30 discussion?

Thanks man!

P.S, not that you're wrong but wouldn't it just be easier to have people download the big ZIP file from my website for the drivers so that they can get ALL the CORRECT ones at the exact same time instead of hunting for a bunch on Pany's site?

Hit the F2 key at boot. You can then get your model number. It will be listed there along with the serial numbers. Don't change anything unless you know what your doing.

Generally speaking..

MK1 = 1.2GHz
MK2 = 1.3GHz
MK3 = 1.4GHz
MK4 = 1.6GHz
MK5 = 1.6GHz

Yes... SOME drivers are for the SPECIFIC MK#... So go HERE to get the proper drivers... And let us know what else you need in the way of User Guides (Which I think are available on that site I just linked, free registration) or Service Manuals, Schematics, etc...

I dont believe you will have much luck with 64 Bit, but you can try!

Rob, great thread. It will help alot of people for sure. For some reason I have found that if I DON'T use Panny's Video Driver my Hotkey Functions will not work properly. On my last install, I did as you desribed a well and stayed with the Windows video driver. Yet again, my Hoykey would not function properly with it until I changed. Wierd....

Rick, I noticed that you did not instruct or mention the Toshiba Bluetooth software. On my last install I did not load it and use the Windows BT. No difference in my opinion and alot less processes going on. That is the one negative I have seen with the Toshiba BT is the amount of processes that run in the background. Do you load it on yours?

Rick, I did some googling about the W7 Calibration to find out why I only had 4. Come to find out that if you click on Start~Type TABCAL~ you will then get all 16 points.
And then I found out afterwards that if you click on Reset that will give you the 16 as well. Didn't try that though after I did the TABCAL.

At least I am not crazy!!!!!!!!

Ok, so I just finished to install W7 on my CF-30 MK1.
I got all the issues that you all had on the threads and I solve them all but 2 issues;
1. Internal GPS - I can't to stop the mouse from jumping when the GPS is enable in the BIOS. I tryed 3 files but only this "GPSRegistryPatch_v2.00l11_30K_30L_W732_ss6983" file from CF-30 MK3 could be installed on W7. Any idea how to get it work?
2. Fingerprint - I found the driver and the software for W7 and it's all works fine on window platform and it sees my fingerprint. But, it can't see my fingerprint when it boots from the BIOS. Is there any way to reset fingerprint in the BIOS?
The rest works no problems, my CF-30 is like a rocket!

I never got my fingerprint reader to work either. But I think it was because I installed the wrong software first... And then I couldn't completely uninstall it to install the other.

The GPS is a nuisance. I can't remember (And I didn't even read my own post above to see if I mentioned it) the driver that I used... But I think I needed to unpack it with WinRAR and install the registry entry manually. -BUT- The directions say that you should disable the GPS in the BIOS FIRST! (This will also stop the jumping cursor while you install the driver) Then once the driver is installed.... Set it to AUTO in the BIOS... I think it appears on COM3. (And always at 4800 Baud for your programs!)

Hope this helps...

Quite frankly... I think I am about to switch back to XP Pro. Networking issues and IE8 are enough to drive me to drink!

Thank you for your help TB.
You were right, the GPS working now! I had to install the registry entry manually.
What is it with your Networking issues? Mine works perfect. (I have Intel Pro 3945 A/B/G)
And the IE8 have issues on every computer/laptop with Windows XP/Vista/7.
(or maybe something is wrong with my 2 Tablet-PCs, 5 laptops and 4 desktops?)

The fingerprint is a piece of cake as long as you update the software to Eikon Protector Suite 2009 - Windows 7 Update .($19.99) My CF-51 would not work untill I upgraded it. I tried the free trial first and never had a problem so I upgraded it. Is the fingerprint reader in a CF-30 a Upek fingerprint reader ??

Where did you get the drivers from ? When I installed Windows 7 on my 30 MK1 I used the drivers from toughbooktalk Index of ./CF-30 Windows 7 Drivers - Darrin Gartrell/ and never had one problem. Did you update the BIOS first before the install ?

Hey folks, looking for some hints on getting Windows 7 working on a MK2 (CF-30FADAQAM) CF-30.

I've tried following the instructions at ~Toughbook Talk~ Toughbook Discussion • View topic - Getting Windows 7 to work on a Mark 1 CF-30, but am having problems on nearly every step.

Using the MK2 Vista drivers downloaded from Panasonic's site, except for the couple of MK3 Win 7 drivers recommended in the linked posted, the list of stuff below is not installing for one reason or another - generally errors relating to OS version, as well as some oddball errors. Additionally, for steps where you select Update Driver in the device manager, I usually get a message that the driver Windows already has installed is more current and it will not take the Panasonic drivers.

Video, Modem, Touchpad, Touchscreen, GPS registry patch, LAN, WLAN... stopped at this point since I don't expect this install to work right.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using W7 32bit ?
My gps works without the patch ,It did not install anyway
My mk-2 worked sorta ok without additional driver's and I just downloaded a few
Some features that worked in xp/vista did not work though
Look in device manager for issues and report what is marked with a !
The mk-1 is far easier to run W7 on for some reason
Btw the trick seems to be you start with the factory vista ,and upgrade to W7

A Different Approach

So I've got this new MK3 which has been sitting around for a while with 0 hours, installed W7 with the restore disk when I got it and haven't felt up to the hassle of learning a new OS. The MK1 had a hard drive failure the other day so I put some applications on the MK3 and started learning my way around. Got to thinking as I was putting the new hard drive in the caddy for the MK1, I was kind of liking W7, "I wonder". So I stuck the MK1 caddy in the MK3 and restored with W7. When I put the drive in the MK1 it booted right up with a message that the "Panasonic Misc Driver" had not been installed. Clicked <close> on that and then on similar messages for, Sound Max, Power Saving, Wireless Switch, Concealed Mode, Network Card, Wireless Adapter, and a few more, access to all not available due to missing Misc. Driver. Rebooted and reduced the list to Power Saving, Wireless Switch, and Concealed Mode. I then discovered that I had to update the BIOS, "before installing W7". Actually you don't, I updated per the instructions found over at Rob's place and all went well after I figured out how to "run" stuff in the W7 world. There are a lot of changes in W7 which I find aggravating, do you really need 50 icons in Control Panel? I still can't find a bunch of stuff, but I digress. So now we have no pop ups about Misc Driver, it all fixed itself on reboot and everything works, everything! All I need now is to find where I control my desktop so I can get some smaller icons on there. I think its a control panel issue not a screen resolution one, everything but the desk top looks fine. Any help finding all the stuff that used to be under "Display" seems to have been moved to multiple new locations.
EDIT: This is not a touchscreen model so YMMV.

I have got a lot better on windows 7 since I have it on three of my machines right now. I have got to where I like it as much as xp. If you mess with vista and 7 I highly recommend this.

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-v2-a-tweak-ui-for-windows-7-vista

This link is to the ULTIMATE WINDOWS TWEAKER.

It puts all the hidden settings of vista and 7 in one location. Lets you choose how much time till it ends unresponsive tasks, you can change computer name, factory logo, who made it, etc. It has a LOT of settings that you normally have to dig around for all in one place. Just make sure you hit apply on each page before you go to the next page of stuff.

Thanks guys, I'll look into those. I forgot to mention that the MK1 is running W7 fine with only 1GB ram. I pulled the two 2GB sticks out while diagnosing the hard drive problem. Don't get me wrong, I really like W7, I just think MS made the learning curve much higher for long time windows users than they had to. Maybe its not so bad for people who used Vista in between.

I know the feeling Cap, I went from XP to W7 too. Every time I go to remove a program I look for "add and remove" in the control panel and am lost :confused: ...after a few minutes it hits me "programs and features" :mad: . Not sure if I will ever get use to it.

I think we should add to this Sticky now that we have all had time to install~uninstall~cuss like a sailor~then do it all over again :)

The biggest curiosity I have is the video driver. Am I the only one that has problems if I do not install Panasonic's driver? My Fn keys to control the on screen pop up for F1 and 2 will not pop up no matter what. It is a huge benefit if we could use the latest video driver from Intel. The video driver is so important since these do not have a very powerful video cards to begin with. I can get my ext monitor much higher in resolution if I don't use the OEM driver.

Where are we at with 64 bit? For the one's that have installed it with everything working please tell.

Not really; and here's a possible "cure" for "Iconitus" ;):

Ultimate Windows Tweaker, a Tweak UI for Windows 7 & Vista

Now, I cannot say if this utility is "Good" or "Bad," or even what its capabilities are. I still use Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Media Edition (a Multi-Media version of "Professional") and, therefore, use the genuine Microsoft Power Toys Tweak UI.

The Microsoft utility allows you to add/remove icons from Windows Control Panel; hopefully the "Ultimate Windows Tweaker" does as well.

Or set the control panel to display it in a list, that way you can look at the list for what you need.
