I've used a few diodes that way as a temporary fix to provide a small voltage drop in RC planes/cars... but regulated is always best. I'm concerned about Teo's statement that the "5v dropped to 3.6v under load"; this seems to indicate either heavy loading of the 5v source or perhaps a current limiting resistor in series that just happens to be the right value to drop 3.6v across a 75ma (the rated current draw of the EM408) load. Either way I fear that Teo's choice of spots to tap for a power source may not be best practice, even if it DOES work, it could in actuality be something other than a power supply; might even be a TTL data circuit (Of course if it's the same VCC rail used for the OEM GPS, completely disregard that).

Has anyone here actually tried to tap into the 3.3v rail for RAM on the mainboard ? It seems it would be perfect; correct regulated voltage, plenty of current capacity for an additional 75ma draw, plus you KNOW it turns OFF in power off & suspend to disc modes, but stays on in suspend to memory mode.

Should be able to find it at either RAM socket or near one of the mini-PCI or PCI/e slots... maybe even on the sled itself.

Mnem... As I said before... Genius...

I may try that... I just hook up the the CN18 where the stock GPS goes so I think I am set... But I think the stock GPS also stays on when the laptop is off. So I may try that idea. It would be easy to find on the schematics! ;)

Toughbook you mention a bluetooth card for the pcmcia slot that allows the door to close. Can you reccomend a brand, model no. or site to buy one.

Ah I hope you 29ers don't throw snowballs at me for butting in on your lill chat. I have a question: Does the CF18 have an internal card slot?

That may be a question for the experienced guys who have opened them up. I know my 18 does have two pcmcia slots accessable from the outside. Internal I nooo nossink!
