Sooo after many upgrades to my cf-28, touchscreen, wifi, hardrive, keyboard, motherboard, gps (still workin on that one). I (or someone) managed to swap powerpacks when plugging it in. The power pack in question was for a vaio 19.5 volts 3 amp , vs the toughbook's 16v 3.8 amp. My toughbook will no longer boot, no lights on the dash no nothing. What do you think i fried? whole mobo? single component? help :(

Hopefully its just a fuse. Ohlip seems to be the fuse expert. I have a couple of Sony 16v power supplies from the local recycle center, but if I had a 19.5 volt one around, I'd paint it orange or put some colored tape on it or something to avoid a disaster. One of the guys on the dredge plugged my CF-30 power supply into his Gateway the other day. No problem, the Gateway takes 19v. Thanks for the post, I'll have to be extra careful as it seems the Gateway supply will probably fit into my Toughbook. Gasp!!

One time I bought a lot of 15 CF-28's and they all came with Sony Vaio adapters, and I immediately called my vendor complaining and he said he has sold hundreds of them with the Sony adapters and he's never had an issue... WEIRD!

yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaa, about that (in lumburg voice) I don't know of any fuse on any laptop motherboards... I've taken apart THOUSANDS of laptops and I've never seen a fuse for that... I don't have a definitive answer so I'm not gonna say it doesn't exist without physically checking (which I can't because I don't have a 28 mobo at all), but based on prior experience, I don't think one would exist. also I've only seen an ac adapter fry motherboards a handful of times... most of the time the ac adapter breaks/frys before the board does.

I've used the sony ones too, only thing I noticed I don't like is it makes the unit run really hot, especially around the HD caddy area, never caused any "real" problems though I prefer to stick with the OEM ones....

Near the dc jack, you can enlarge the pdf file so that you can see it at the left side of f4 near the edge of mbo. It is mark F5.

Sony makes two different power supplies, a 16.5v and a 19.x volt. Both use a MP205 connector, the same as used on most Toughbooks prior to the CF-29. Inbredmonkey used one of the 19.x volt ones. As I said, I have a couple of the 16.5 volt ones which work fine with Toughbooks. Volts is volts.

This is a good lesson, just because the power adapter fits your power socket doesn't mean it should be plugged in there.

Like I said, I knew Ohlip would know the answer to the fuse question.

The Sony 16V adapters work fine. I've using them (and aftermarket replacements) for a couple years now.. zero complaints. Here's the best deal I've found so far.. I'm using one and pleased with it:

Never tried a 19V adapter, but I'm surprised it didn't work. The toughbook wiki says toughbooks have been successfully powered with up to 24-25VDC..

It did work, for about 3 minutes, then it shut off and wouldn't come back. :(

Well, the 4 fuses that are circled on the schematic are fine? Anybody have any other suggestions?

Have you tried plugging in a standard power supply into it to see if it still works?

I know, I know, captain obvious strikes again. Just curious :)

Yeah, i tried that right away. :(
I have found a tech manual
    http://amd751.ru/files/cf-28techmanual.pdf

in section 4.4.1 it's states "is 15v applied to pins 5-8 of Q53 if yes is 8-11.4v applied to pins 1-3 Q50 etc. etc.

I cannot find Q53 does anyone have an index to the fuse-1.pdf? It's driving me nuts. And when i do find Q53, can I have my naked motherboard plugged in while testing without doing any damage?

    @Inbredmonkey -

    Have you browsed Modly's CF-28 site: modly.org/CF-28/

It has a bunch of manuals/etc. on it.
