    Why so expensive?
Can get em for about $500 less elsewhere..

    I guess I don't get it...
$1500-2K for outdated tablet hardware when I can pick up a $199-500 tablet with better specs, throw a griffin/otterbox/pelican on it for about $50 and have a better unit...

I think the name is costing $$ like Sony...

How is it to play with? Wouldn't you rather have the d1?

    I agree with gmgfarrand.
    Too expensive
Specs are funny - Android tablet market is too fast for Panasonic :))
I think Toughpad is dead on arrival :)))

Anyway, they will find their buyers - high price means high payoff to the chiefs of military/police etc :))

ALL Toughbooks are slow with outdated hardware. They are also ALL very expensive.
Take one of the cheap high speed tablets/laptops and drop it. Maybe go out and use it in the rain or a dust storm. I'm sure you'll be able to recover some of your losses by selling the still working parts on fleabay. Then go buy a replacement.
Anything with the Toughbook brand is designed for a specific market. That market is not the highest speed/lowest cost market. It's the industrial/commercial/military market. That market puts durability above cost and speed. In that world an equipment failure will cost thousands of dollars and possibly lives.
I have a otterbox for one of my old phones. They do work, but they are like a cond*m. It's just not the same when you use one.
Last year I bought a new cell phone. It's a ZTE 90. It is ugly and DUMB. It does not have a touchscreen. It does not even have a full keyboard. It is waterproof and LOUD. I went through about 8 SMART phones. This one works. I can actually hear it and don't need to replace it every month. I liked the fancier phones, but at the end of the day, I need a phone that WORKS AS A PHONE when I need one.
I am not planning on buying any tablet as I don't have a need for one.

    That's not true.

    Toughbooks are professional hardware really.
Android tablets (including this Toughpad) are not. Android is unstable, you can't rely on it.
And since it's just an entertainment device - it's more clever to buy one of the popular tablets. They are fast and cheap. It's easy to throw it out if/when it dies (or you want a newer one) and buy a new one.
I'm not interested in such expensive tablets, but want to know theory - does this Toughpad works with wet hands or under rain? I can't use either of my capacitive screens with wet hands.
If Toughpad has capacitive touchscreen - there is no sense in it's IP rating.
If Toughpad has resistive touchscreen - it's awful/unusable for Android :)

I still think they are very interesting little machines. Any idea what the starting pricing on the B series is going to be?

    A series

    Trusted Boot
The Trusted Boot feature verifies the unique signature
of digitally signed operating system load, prior to
booting the system. If tampering is detected, the
boot process halts, preventing any unauthorized
access to data. For added protection, it keeps
fraudulent OS versions from circumventing the data
encryption and software security features of the tablet.

That would make it pain later on if you wanted to try a completely different OS.

The multi touch and digitizer will be nice.

Optional gps, 3g, 4g, hot spot

    Android 4.0
    1.2GHz Dual-Core
    1 GB ram
    16Gb flash memory
use micro sd cards up to 32 gb
    1024 x 768
    500 nit LCD
    Docking connector (optional dock)
    Dual cameras
    3 Year warranty (hell yea)

I would still choose it over an Ipad.

"Take one of the cheap high speed tablets/laptops and drop it. Maybe go out and use it in the rain or a dust storm."
Did that with a Tegra 3 (12core Android tablet and rugged case)
    Total cost $250
Still worked, hell we throw em...
    Worked better than the Panny

I got rid of my Toughbook and got this last year:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic/639291-my-toughbook-has-been-replaced.html

    Some scuffs, some dings..
Still running strong with 2x 256GB SSDs in it.
Military has been using them and the local law enforcement are getting these instead of Toughbooks for a few reasons.
The Dell RETAILs for about $5,500 as I have mine configured.... Dell outlet price ~$1500 with 3yr warranty.
We can get parts next day, sometimes same day.
Specs... Panasonic can't touch the specs with the fully rugged line.. It just can't.

I hate Dell, but this thing beat my Panasonic in every single way possible...

Buying an overpriced, under powered Android tablet shows either fanboy-ism, or inability to do research for the best product.

If you pay anywhere near $1,000 for an Android tablet, you need your TECH card pulled, be groin punched, and dropped off to work at your Local Best Buy.. In short, you are an idiot...

And if someone still wants FZ-A1 - just found FZ-A1BDAAZ1M here 100 bucks cheaper :)
    Plus " You'll earn $27.58 in eBay Bucks" ;)

    P.S. FZ-A1BDAAV1M = 1799
    FZ-A1BDAAA1M = 1566

Or you can find even better offers.

Rob, your offer is... very strange ;)

I knew I would stir things up. I won't argue the reasoning behind Toughbooks. Arguing never changed anyone's opinion on anything.
I figure there are 2 groups of people, either you get Toughbooks or you don't. If you don't well so be it. I don't get Iphones. Palm OS was out years before the "super duper" Iphone, yet everyone thought Iphones were revolutionary.BAH!

    I liked the PALMOS!
I had the Palm Pilot, then the Palm Pilot Pro...
Then Windows CE, then Windows Mobile 2003, had several IPAQ models..
    Those were the days..
Had an Android phone, work went to iPhone, iPhone went in otterbox/griffin survivor and now resides snugly and safely in a LIFEPROOF case.
Between IOS and Android... IOS is polished, a polished turd...
    Android is evolving quite nicely..

Panasonic made a rugged tablet, OK, now they need to revamp the hardware to make it even remotely interesting or competitive.
Designing a tablet and releasing it in 2010 with an outrageous price tag 2 years later is FAIL.
