Mint 18.1 mate is running now on my main machine, I have quickly found that there is nothing I need in Windows, imagine that. And yesterday one of my customers found out he had been hacked big time with Windows 10, you know, the really safe Windows 10?

I don't use a laptop anymore but I have had Cloudready on a 52GUN and Lubuntu on several other Toughbook's running live while waiting on new hard drives. Worked live on that Getac V100X too. :D

still , one of the biggest problems is the back-n-forth compatibility of libreoffice and MSO .

They download fake audio/video/books with .exe extensions and run them, ignoring admin's and OS's warnings. Too many fakes through the web and they become smarter.
A week ago I've had to reinstall OS (the new one is Win10) for one of my relatives because of dozens of trojans. They couldn't really capture OS thanks to Microsoft Security Essentials courage, but 9 years old Vista didn't not survive this battle. Myocardial infarction in cosequence of consternation, you know...
So the only way to keep system safe is to prohibit any installations by user. It's possible to organize in Windows too. It's incorrect to give admin rights to users.

yeppers , i have been asked how a bunch of stuff got on a couple of business machines .
i did track it back to the times when a certain office gal was logged onto the machines .
she was downloading/playing online those cutesy *games* .
i showed the owner and he wanted to know what to do .
"i'll clean them out and then you need to research "keylogger" programs ... i cannot tell you to use them , but they are your machines"
he loaded the keylogger and called me in after the machines got borked .
i looked at the logs ... yessir , the gal was logging onto the other office gal's machine and going to websites of a dubious nature .
several programs had been downloaded and still showed in the "downloaded files" .
even the firewall and AV/AM confirmed end-running the protection .
    she got fired .
wanna guess who the SOB was ?
    heh heh heh

My only glitch now is my cheap printer, can't even get it to work in VMware let alone Mint. Does a beautiful test page and when I hit print,it shoots a blank page out. Going to completely uninstall it in VM and try again.....cuz I got that kinda time. :D

I have tried Linux a few times and got no where. It's just not user friendly as far as I am concerned. I had a Kodak printer and no way could I get that to work. If I am right Jeff had the same problem. When Linux runs like windows 7 then I will try it again.

On Mint 18.1 there is a list of compatible printers,I have a pos Epson X410 and it's always been a pita to get to work on Linux. I'm going to a laser printer anyway as I only do black and white printing. My business partner is a Linux guru and got the X410 working on Debian once so I know he can figure it out.

    It's all learning curve.

I can set up my Kodak (wireless 5250) in three minutes on a new install. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> After updates and upgrades of the new install.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Windows takes thirty and adds excessive bloatware when I can find the DVD...longer if I need to download.

Speaking of "bloatware" .....half a pound of hamburger and a package of Top Ramen has rendered me bloated.

    We'll argue later.

Kerry, I need to find a Mint 18.1 unit here and we will then continue...meanwhile ooooof.....plus I PM'ed some ideas.

Late afternoon tomorrow please...ewes threatening to lamb, eight inches of snow and torrential rain and wind. IOW I'll be back Lord willing. Is snow classified as torrential?

    yeppers ...
been in winds like that combined with the aforementioned precipitation .
it'll knock the stink right off of ya .

i have left my printer(s) hooked up to a/the *host box* and put in a new HDD , then loaded mint 13 .
after all the normal install stuff , the first task was to get the printers up and running ...
to my pleasant surprise , i found two printers ready to go .

and i have/had a high dollar 8 (?) color epson photo printer that i have/had to run on a XP box as there are no drivers in 'nix nor were the windows drivers *updated* to W7 (compatibility mode fails) .
i gave this machine to a friend as he still has a XP machine dedicated to photo work .

Just for giggles, this is what I'm running Mint 18 on. Lenovo S20 Xeon 3550 3.07, 24gb of ram, GTX 750ti, Crucial 525gb SSD as the main drive,3TB WD Green for the storage drive and a 60gb Kingston SSD to run VMware.

All that to watch movies, listen to music and fly airplanes online in World of Aircraft...and I suck at it. :p :D

So play a game and send me your printer. I've been pecking away at it.....Mint is the problem....and CUPS "probably/maybe" the answer.

Better yet bring it down here.....you know the route. Don't forget the pepper bacon.

Can't afford to drive that far right now, poor as a mouse. The printer is on its way out to run off an XP machine for a storage place.

Ironically owned by the same guy I got the bacon and steaks from.

Printer is working, turns out the printer's black nozzle was plugged,it would print a test page using all the colors but no B&W. So yes the printer setup in Mint 18.1 works! :D
