I think I broke something on my CF-28

I just got a CD drive today from a member here. I throw it in the PC to test and it worked great. So I start to get ready to do the CD-to-DVD mod, and in my excitement, I forgot to double-check the photo guide here and jumped the wrong connection (C202 if I remember correctly.) Unfortunately, I didn't catch this until after I had inserted the drive into the computer and it immediately cut off.

I then double checked my mod, noticed my mistake, and remedied it, however with the proper jump, it now just locked the computer up before it even made it to the BIOS screen, or if inserted when turned on, it just locksed the CF-28 up. I then removed the jump altogether and reinstalled the known-working Panasonic CD drive. It still gives the same result.

This is only with the CD drive, my floppy drive hasn't caused any issues, and the computer is otherwise fine. I didn't see or smell any magic smoke.

Did I just nuke something on my computer, and is it possible to fix it?

Triple check to make sure the R2 shunt is fully bridging the gap. The symptoms you have now sound like what happens if the R2 mod is not done right, or at all.

I tried it with the gap bridged and unbridged with both the DVD drive and the original Panasonic CD drive. The same thing happens; either the computer freezes if already on, or on boot it freezes after "Mouse initialized..."

Did the cd drive work good before you modded the dvd drive?
What model of dvd are you installing

I bought it from a member here NIW, and it worked fine before I incorrectly did the mod. Right now, I'm just trying to get it to work with the CD drive it came with, but the DVD drive I have is a Toshiba CD-RW/DVD-ROM SD-R2512 I pulled from an old laptop sitting around collecting dust. It still works in the other computer.

This one is the mistake, which I tried rectfying.

This is the correct R2 mod I did afterward: http://i49.tinypic.com/2yywk8y.jpg

If you have reversed the mod and the standard cd drive will not boot its one of two issues

You have a problem on the m/b or you have a problem on the caddy interface

I would not even take the chance that the caddy interface is safe to try in another Toughbook

Best to hope its just a caddy , and replace that first

Then see if the new caddy works
If not replace the m/b and sell the spare caddy

Looks like the interface circuit board may be damaged in the area of your first mod. Did you remove a capacitor from the C201 spot?
