Thanks for the listing Rob I am kind of interested in one of these.
-James -
and if you can get it for anything under $400 you WILL GET A STEAL DEAL!!!!. I didn't check if it is RevA or not though, so check on that
-
Rob,
In addition to that unit, what is required to install in a non-wwan ready CF-30?
Cap -
From what i have read it is a lot of parts and not worth it.
You would need the ribbon cable at cn-18 the docking piece and all brackets and screws.
Then you would need the bump out cover on the lcd with all brackets and screws. The antenna and tube and the wire to go down to the card.
Then there is a few switches and cables that are on the front of the toughbook as well. Really it is a lot of stuff.
After looking up all the part numbers it is alot of parts to order from heartland and may really not be worth it unless you have a wwan ready 29.
If i was to get one i would save it until I found a wireless ready TB on fleabay and then sell my TB.
-James -
This kit is for wireless-ready CF-29's, basically if your model has 'Z' on the third last digit of the model string you're out of luck.
Anyhoo, this is Verizon EVDO Rev. 0, list $499.
The Verizon Rev 0 kit for non-wireless ready CF-29s is CF-WEW29006VR, list $778.
And of course, add installation on all the prices above. -
LOL, what james said!!!! forget it!!! I tried once on my 29... got half way through and gave up lol... until somone buys almost every spar part from heartland (assuming he could get them) and puts together a huge doc on what he did, we will all pretty much be clueless on how to install this card into a non wwan laptop

What is the differance between Rev.0 and Rev.A
-James -
Rev.0 is between 1.5 - 1.8MBP/s download and about 150kbps upload... Rev.A is MUCH BETTER on the upload with it being bosted to 600-800kbps and a little better download around 1.8-2.4mbps. now their is best cases in every city... in vegas for example i was able to achieve 3mbps (320kbps file download) and i was able to upload at around 1.2mbps (125 kbps file upload). see below for more info:
http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/37/61/ = general info
http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/96/64/ = sprint coverage
http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/27/64/ = verizon coverage
All in all sprint has the largest EVDO footprint in the U.S. than Verizon has. Verizon on the other hand has their entire EVDO network Rev.A (meaning that if they have EVDO, it will be Rev.A, but if EVDO isn't available then it won't be Rev.0, it would just be 1xrtt (which is about 150-200kbps down and about 80-100kbps upload)
Hope that clears some of it up... It's hard to explain, but I know this stuff like the back of my hand -
Well I have a chance to get a rev.0 for pretty cheap (about $150) would it be worth it or should i hold off for a rev. A and pay alot more.
-James -
I personally have used them both and for $150 thats a STEAL! get it... For the average user to check email and serf the introwebs, that should cut it
If you are like me and administer servers all day long and are CONSTANTLY uploading BIG files to them, or if you do ALOT of VPN work with files over the VPN, then Rev.0 MOST DEF WON'T CUT IT. -
No i dont do alot of uploading so i guess the rev.0 card will be good for me.
Those links you gave are great I am still looking at it right now.
Thanks Rob

Ok well i got a question. If the TB i am getting has GPS installed then how do i add the wwan card?
I have not seen a OEM gps unit but i though it was installed where the wwan card goes.
Any idea's
-James -
AFAIK the GPS unit is in a different area (IE, not where the WWAN unit would go)... I looked up your unit, and u got a great one
.... anyways that WWAN card would go in above the battery on that machine if I can remember correctly. Fully loaded ideally would be (working simultaneously): 1) GPS, 2) Bluetooth, 3) WWAN, 4) WLAN, 5) Dual pass-through antenna for the mounts, & 6) fingerprint ~OR~ smart card reader (who use's those anyways lol)
-
Ya the wwan card goes above the battery but i though the gps was there as well.
Guess i will find out soon enough -
The GPS module is tiny and fits alongside the wireless modem on the sled ,and the patch antenna is mounted in the little bunp out of the plastic cover. pretty much like the CF-28 and sorry to say just as crappy
-
If GPS is on the card that is in the TB and it has no WWAN card I can just swap the parts over from one card to the other right? or do i have to get a wwan with gps built in?
-
Can the Mini pci-e card be changed ?
Reason i ask is you can get say dell mini pci-e evdo card and put it in the sled or is something like this not possible.
I will see soon but i think the TB i am getting has a sled already so maybe i can just pop a mini pci-e in there and be set. that would be greatbut my luck is not that good.
-James -
James, if you are referring to the mini PCI-E under the keyboard that houses the Intel WLAN card, then yes. However you would lose WLAN capabilities, & I don't know if the 2.4GHz designed antennas (2 of them) would work for 850MHz/1900MHz EVDO.
-
No i mean the pci-e card on the wwan sled. I noticed in the picture you have it is just a mini pci-e card on the sled.
the wlan is a mini pci but not mini pci-e card. I need wlan cant live without it -
-
Oh really well i am not lucky enough to own a cf-30
lol But on the cf-29 it is mini-pci. looks like they upgraded on the cf-30 to mini pci-e. I am glad mine is mini pci so i can have the card i do.
I hope that i can just pick up a mini pci-e card and fit it into the sled thats in there and i will be good to go. I mean it will be much much cheaper that way.
-James -
O sorry lol... I didn't realize u didn't have a CF-30 DOH, maybe I should read ur d@mn signature lol
If anyone is looking for a Verizon card for a CF-30, theirs one here
