I have a CF28 that has been on the work bench for months now.The original fault was a corrupted HDD,this was followed by a m/board fault-a new board was fitted.
Then I found that the DVD/ROM was not recognised, tried the suggested mod, with no success and finally changed the DVD/ROM for a new one,but didn't solve this problem.
Now I have reached a new problem, Wndows XP Prof, which is the installed OS,won't boot up. The boot screen opens but that is far as it goes.
I've tried all the options provided by the F8 button, but nothing works- can't start normally, get into safe mode or anything else and, as I can't use the DVD/ROM, I can see no way of clearing this fault without a complete reinstallation and can't see any way of doing this without using a CD.
Does anyone have a magic solution to this?
Mine is to trash it and buy a new one,but it has a lot of important data on it and a very expensive licence.

Remove the hard drive and put it in one of those external cases...
Amazon.com: USB 2.0 External 2.5" IDE HDD Enclosure Case Blue For Laptop: Electronics
something like that.
Access the data from the drive and see if it is corrupted. With all the hardware issues you have been having it is difficult to tell whether the problem spread to the software.
Good luck! I've lost more data over the years than I care to think about. -
There is a clumbersome (sic) way of doing this if the machine will talk to a floppy drive. BTW are you sure you don't have issues with the plug in the media bay?
1. Download ploplinux and install to floppy. see image for file I used. Ploplinux has a very informative site.
2. With floppy in drive and USB CD reader attached w/XP restore disc loaded, boot the machine.
3. Select USB, hit [enter] and bite your fingers as things start to whir.
I use this (Ploplinux) for machines that do not have USB in the boot order....to date CF-28,29 MK 1 and 2, 51 A. Granted I have not done it with a USB CD but I have used USB stick and USB Harddrive.
If you try this let us me know.
