I am wanting to install a GPS unit on my 30. I am of the understanding that there are 2 different one's I can go with? The 1st being the stock Panny unit, the other I have read from Toughbook, or maybe it's just the antenna setups?

Has anybody attempted this yet? Where does one start to do this mod?

Lets see if we can make this work. I am more than willing to put mine in the guniea pig arena :D

As we discussed, unless I missed it, I don't think anyone has installed a true aftermarket GPS into their CF-30. I've done it to a ton of 29s, 28s, and a few 18s... But I only have one CF-30 and use it too much to take apart.

Can someone clarify exactly where the stock GPS engine is located? I know this has been discussed somewhere before. We know that the patch antenna is perched on the top right LCD corner. (I'm trying to avoid taking mine apart as I use it all the time.)

I am working on it for my latest cf-30 mk-1 that was purchased without gps
    My thoughts are cf-30 stock antenna+ bump-out
Then an aftermarket gps engine module

I have just been away from home a lot lately , so its been on hold for a while

    Alex,

I'd go custom all the way with the stock bump-outs. Toyo's issue is that he has the Gobi modem so it cannot go in there. I could swear that we discussed/decided that the stock GPS engine as under the keyboard.

I would use the Jim Gray patch antenna in the stock bump-out. The patch antennas come with (I'm pretty sure) a 24" lead so that should give plenty of room.

However... I still want to develop an easy and elegant switch to turn off power to the GPS off when the laptop is turned off. I was thinking about adding another magnetic switch. Either that or a small pressure/momentary switch that the base of the screen bezel would push down on to break the connection. But I think I'd go with the magnetic switch for ease of installation.

I'll jump in on this one since I wasn't here for the development stages of the 28 and 29 aftermarket GPS. Send me some manuals and I'll try to get my grimy mitts on 1 or even 2 of the cf30s for test subjects :)

I like your idea about the pressure switch but I would think the magnetic switch would prolly be a bit more effective. then again I can't make any suggestions because I haven't even put my hands on a cf30 yet. I am definitely excited to get one or 2 :D

Rick, My MK2 is the one we were discussing about putting a GPS in,which doesnt have Gobi, but now I need one in my MK3,which does have Gobi. Like I had told you, I could send you my MK2 and you could play around with it since we now have an extra one to use as a tester.

Well... I need to make sure that it can go in without disturbing your Gobi. I want to make sure that I can do a plug and play operation like I have done for the CF-29... Everything is pre-built and then it takes about 15 minutes to install.
