Thought I would give this a bash as I could do with a bit more range over the 5100.
Bought a card from an Acer but decided to do the pin 20 mod as I was pushed for time. Its the full size one rather than than the half size as I thought the half size might cause cable routing problems.
I noticed that the MK3, at least in the UK, had a bluetooth antenna mounted above the right hand antenna for the WiFi. Unfortunately its not possible to access these without seperating the case which is not that bad if you are familar with the CF-51 construction. Basically I removed the screen complete, the keyboard and the speaker mounting. Its just a case of flipping it over and removing all the screws you can see including the two underneath the battery cover. Turn it back over and then remove the two screws at the top centre. Be careful at the lefhand top as you need to manipulate the cover and its pretty thin there. I removed the screw from the plate to allow a little wiggle room.
Once seperated you will see the BT antenna. I used another WiFi antenna from a dead CF-51 with the black lead which is long enough to reach the card as the BT replacement. The grey antenna was a bit short but if you unstick it there is enough slack to attach to the card. Once you are satisfied with the cable routing you can secure the cables down with some tape. So thats the 3 antenna all fitted without much fuss!
After reassembly the Intel Pro does not recognise it at all. I installed what I think was the Intel 5100/5300 latestest driver which I got when trying something on a CF-74. That seemed to pick it up and its shown in the Device manager as working. All this is on XP3 by the way.
Early days at the moment as I have not had the opportunity to test whether it will accomplish what I was trying to do. It now has a 144Mbps signal as opposed to 56Mpbs with the stock 3495 card.
So apart from the amount of disassembly and lack of recognition by the Pro Set, it seems to be a worthwhile upgrade especially as the third antenna can go in the space of the unused BT antenna to give an OE looking fitment. I'll report back on whether it achieved my aims!
