You guys might have already known this, but it appears that our elusive AC adapter plug is called an MP205 connector. I read this in an ebay listing. A quick google search turned up many interesting hits, and this DIY kit was the first:

 Well, now... if that little circuit isn't just... elegant. I've built more than a few DC-DC converters in my time, but never used the regulator IC as the actual oscillator; I've always used a couple of transistors in a push-pull arrangement feeding a transformer which is then full-wave rectified & regulated. This circuit's output is only half-wave rectified, meaning it's probably got a lot of ripple in the output. I don't know if that 2200uf brute force filter he's got in there will be enough for some more sensitive devices; but that pulsating DC output would be great for charging NiCd & SLA batteries.

thanks! i hoped i'd find an electronics distributor with "MP205" in their catalog but no luck yet
 I know radio shack HAD these.. maybe i need to find a well-stocked store with knowledgable staff and i'll be all set
