So here's the deal, (and normally I wouldn't ask because 99.99999% of the time I can just figure it out), however this one has caught me dead!![]()
Laptop: CF-30CQQAXBM
History: started happening about 2-3 months ago (and have been troubleshooting that long lol)
Problem: Internet just dies. When browsing for a random amount of time, (could be 1 hour, could be 3 days) the internet randomly dies and the only way to fix it is to reboot the damn laptop (which is a pain because it usually happens when I need it most and don't have time to reboot DOH!) Funny thing is: it doesn't matter what connection I'm using. It can be the internal Sprint, the hardwire line or the wireless. When the internet dies I CAN STILL PING external sites (Google for example) and I can ping my router, my server (if I'm connected to the VPN or to the internal network), and I can also use remote desktop and whatnot. Also if the VPN is connected then it STAYS connected. Now I have upgraded my internal WIFI card to a 4965ABGN card but only connected 2 antennas, and that card has been flaky since day one, but this problem only started happening 2-3 months ago and that card has been in their for over a year. (On a side note I had to paint nail polish over one of the pins to work with the WIFI switch and whatnot)... I figured that out by studying the schematics on PCI-Ex slots for laptops.
*I know that it isn't effected by the internal Sprint card as I have tried removing it and it still happens
*It isn't effected by the VPN being connected as I have my VPN router set up in split-tunnel mode
*It isn't effected by the onboard LAN because I've tried disabling it and running only on the Sprint or only on the WIFI
*I thought at one point it was this "webblocker.exe" program that got on my system because of a Sonicwall I was configuring, but after uninstalling this, no avail!
So with that being said I DON'T WANNA WIPE/RELOAD!! What do I do???
Thanks in advance!

At a CMD window run the following command.
"netsh winsock reset"
It will replace the winsock catalog and fix most problems like this, if it does not work I have a few other tools I can share... but this will probably fix it.
Jay -
I think I might have done that.... but I will MOST DEF try that again
Thanks!!! -
Are you using Internet Explorer?
-
Doesn't matter which browser... they all go STRAIGHT (VERY Quickly) to page cannot be displayed...
It's almost like it isn't even trying to get out to the internet. -
Can't remember which one, but did you check your services to see if one of them has changed? Maybe an auto getting changed to manual?
-
Let me know if the problem is not fixed by the winsock repair.

Okay, I did it and rebooted... we'll see how it pans out, I'll keep ya informed. Thanks again
-
Did it work?
-
I think it might have worked, but I've only used my toughbook a handfull amount times since, because I was on vacation outta town... I'll report at the end of this new week and we'll see

Okay so today (4/14/08 @ about 9:20AM) it happened again when I was making an Excel doc on all of our servers "U" count, then when I went to email the doc to my co-worker, POOF!!! No internet, but could still ping my website and my VPN was open and I could access my VPN... had to reboot the **** thing
Any more ideas? -
It sounds like an issue with DNS (hence why you can ping but not access sites via their DNS name)
The next time it fails try to access in a web browser http://64.233.167.99/ (google)
If it fails then you have something else going on, I suspect it will not fail but will open google.
Jay -
Okay, I will try that, however why would it be accross multiple connections (which use entirely different DNS's) if DNS was the issue?
Thanks -
If its DNS service on your machine, then it would not matter the connection.
-
Anyone got any other ideas?
-
What were the results from the last test I had you do?
-
Sorry...The sites still don't load even if I navigate to them directly (74.94.97.165 for example is my static IP to my server and should load up claesotopes.com, but it doesn't go, so it can't be a DNS issue

Well ****,
The next tool I'd throw at the problem would be combofix.
Do a google search for it, download it from Bleeping computer.
Its a long shot, but I'm getting close to stumped.
Jay -
I've used combofix thousands of times before on customers machines... didn't think of it honestly lol, I'll try it. Thanks
-
Its my first line of defence on many problems, and a last line of defence for others.
If nothing else post the log and I'll poke at it with a toothpick later.
Jay -
Well I ran combofix... hopefully that will fix it... attached is the log
.
Thanks again for the help!Attached Files:

Now that I'm thinking about it, I think IT MIGHT HAVE WORKED!!! because I was terminaled into it through the VPN (from work) and the internet just died and I couldn't browse network stuff (just like in the origional post), but I could ping... etc etc etc... and after I ran combo fix I havn't even rebooted and the internet works again on it!!
... cross your fingers!!! w00t w00t

Good luck with it,
Now go install SP3, and find me a CF-18 for my niece!
Jay -
Well after what... almost 2 weeks, still no problem... don't need to reboot or nothin!! BADASS!!! As far as I'm concerned this ticket is CLOSED! thanks again Jay!!!

Glad to hear it!
My pleasure to help you out Rob. -

"When the internet dies I CAN STILL PING external sites (Google for example) and I can ping my router, my server (if I'm connected to the VPN or to the internal network), and I can also use remote desktop and whatnot. "
This is not a hardware problem. If you can ping then the TCP/IP stack and network interface card are working correctly. The problem is software or secruity related. You authentication to the network or router may have expired or a problem with the browser?
