Well just to update/continue the quest to revive the CF-29 in question. The box of parts came on the plane yesterday. Customs only held it for ransom for 2 weeks.
So The MB I purchased from Deere (thanks BTW) and the OEM charger and a new yellow tip batt were in the box (along with 4 more 29's).
First out of curiosity I put the new batt in and connected the new charger... Voila! Fired right up. Everything seems to be in working order EXCEPT the touchpad isn't responding. Touchscreen is working fine but no response from the touchpad.
So in an effort to not switch out the MB I am now wondering if there are any ideas as to what overvoltage could have done to the touchpad?
Well I will go put that carburetor in the Land Cruiser and wait for you guys to mull that one over...

Don't confuse your projects and put the carburetor on the Toughbook.
We all know Toughbooks are fuel injected!
I am glad all your stuff arrived safe and sound. -
ToughCruiser LandBook what's the difference right!
Yeah, I think the carb in the toughbook may let even more majic smoke out! Or maybe that is the trick to putting it back in.... hmmm
I had a thought on the touchpad. I may have missed a connection after taking the MB out during diagnosing. Am I right that all I need to do is lift the KB and take that little panel off to get to that connection?
Update, I would have thought at least the battery was fried from that 19v experiment... buuuut I have it in diagnostic in one of the new 29's right now and it seems like it is just fine. Took 4+ hours to charge and is over 2 hrs discharging now and hasn't hit 50% yet.
Brian -
All connections are accessible when the base of the toughbook is removed
It's an easy one to forget, and also to screw up the connections on the flat cable
As Teo would say...Ask me how I know lol
I had to trim mine back once as I pulled it out of the m/b connector wrong and damaged all the contacts -
Thanks Tomcat. I hate going in the wrong end of the horse!
So the battery is great. 4 hr discharge. Kinda amazed at that one.
Brian
BTW the landcruiser never sounded so good. prrrr ing like a kitten! -
ToughlandingCruisebook? -
Man the way the roads are here, I don't even know if the Toughbook would take that kind of beating. Naaa what am I saying of course it would.
Carb is in and hands are degreased so now into the Toughbook to see if i missed that touchpad plug.

Ok so I opened it up and found one wire that I did forget to connect. It was a white band 1/4 inch wide just under the Ram on the top side of the MB. Is that the touchpad? I reconnected it (which was a real pain in the butt) but the touchpad still doesn't work.
any thoughts?
Tomcat what did you mean by trim it back? I did notice that the end of this white strap had one wire that looked.... shall we say... un-normal. It could be that I have done what you are describing. And which one of you guys put the foam rubber on the top of that connector? That made plugging the wire in all but impossible..... correction, it made it impossible! I had to remove the rubber before I could get the wire in. -
Check the photo. The touchpad cable is the small one that goes under the mb.
It sounds like your touchpad cable has an issue. Can you post a photo of it? -
yeah that is the one that was unplugged. And no i can not get a pic. My camera is back up on the mountain in the village.
What I saw was, on the end of the band it looked like the wire at the edge had peeled up from the plastic band ever so slightly. Almost looked smeared. Hard to describe wish i could take a pic.
So about this trimming thing??? How does that work?
Brian
PS it goes under the MB but thats the top side of the computer cause you gotta flip it over to open it. so i was refering to normal opperation "topside" -
I never trimmed one yet, so I have no advice on that. I imagine use a pair of scissors and trim off the damaged part, leaving enough bare metal to make contact. Another temp option is to borrow a cable from another Tbook to see if that is the problem.
Did you plug the cable in the correct direction? The contacts only work on one side. -
They are small traces that are quite fragile
You can cut a bit off with scissors if the tips are missing from removing the cable without releasing properly
I wish they made these as durable as what the keyboards use -
Panasonic power supplies can be used with the 110v/60Hz in US/Canada/Japan/Americas, and the 230V/50Hz found in Europe & rest of the world.
*Note I know Japan is technically 100v but it still falls within the allowable varation of input for 110V, likewise for Central & Southern America which primarily use 120V
PS. I forgot to notice there were 6 further pages of conversation after I read the opening page - utter fail! -
ok, thanks everyone! She is back up and running!!!!! I did not replace the MB. only changes power supplies. The old battery is fine. So the only issue was the power supply which i was getting 19v out of. So 19v for 9 months and it only fried the powersupply nothing in the 29! Go figure!
On a further note. I did find a web cam here in my stuff so I took pics of the touchpad wire damage and trim. I will start a new post so it will be on here for future use.
Again thanks for all the help.

@jclvsall.............That is truly good news.
@Pinecone..........I wouldn't call it utter fail. You always have good technical info for us. Even if it's late. -
mnem<~~~Glad to be wrong~~~<<< -
No worries MNEM! I never accepted! I figured as you did that my dollar was better spent on a MB.... Well at least I have a spare one in case one of these 29's needs it.
I can't figure what actually was the issue to be honest. The battery is fine the only damage to the 29 was from me ripping the touchpad cord. And I was getting 19v out of the tip of the power supply at the time of the problem. But alas here I sit posting this message from the very same computer so I am not complaining. Maybe the old dog just wanted to rest for 2 months in storage...
Thanks again! It was a learning experience. Now to try to fix the three units with non functioning touchscreens.

Ok, so.... 19v didn't kill it.... How about 1.21 Gigawatts!!!???
Today I am sitting here typing an email on the 29 and a thunderstorm starts. All of the sudden the house is crackling like crazy and WHACK a bolt of lightning shoots out of the TB and into my arm! Screen goes off and everything goes dead.... (except me thank God!) I then decide it might be time to unplug the rest of the equipment...
I wait a few minutes, all the while knowing that after all that trouble trying to fix my problem with the 19v that there is no way the old dog can handle a lightning strike like that. So with no faith at all i slide the power button and voila! Fires up and runs perfect. Modem and everything.
So here comes my next question. I have thought about this all day. There is a little curious thing with this 29. My wife and kids won't use it because they say it shocks them. I always thought it was pinching me but they are right it is a shock. If your arm touches the little recess near the power button where the nipples on the lid sit it will give yo a little shock. Today that is where the lighting came out and hit my arm.
What could be causing this kind of grounding? Could this have been a cause to my original problem?
Bartender: He's been struck by lightning... how many times has it been now, Reg?
Reg: S-s-s-s-s-s-s-six...
Chet: Six times?
Reg: S-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-six-sixty-sixty-six times. In-n-n-n-n-n-n-In-n-n-n-n-n-n-In-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n the head! -
You better check what year it is..You may be in the past and need to get Back to the Future...
The shocking is odd. Did/does it do it with both power supplies?
I have never known 16vdc to give that much if any of a sensation when getting shocked with it. I can touch both terminals of a car battery (13.6vdc)with dry hands and get no sensation. .
Maybe it has to do with the high voltage in the inverter or lcd? -
yes with any power supply i have ever used. I barely feel it. I always thought the little chrome ring in the recess was catching a hair on my arm and or pinching me. But the kids and momma insisted for 2 years that it was a shock. Then one day i felt it ever so slightly and could tell it was electric.
-
but hey don't get me wrong. when that bolt of lighting came outta there and into my arm this afternoon there was no mistaking that buddy!!!
Chet Sixty six times, that hadda hurt! -

Does it do it on battery only? I still say it has to do with the LCD and/or inverter. Check the lcd cable. Especially around the hinges. It may have a slight bare spot. Or the insulation for the inverter board is damaged.
-
Mr Fusion huh.... But does it work on 220v 50hz? I don't think i have a transformer big enough for that guy...
Thanks for asking deere!!! I am sitting here rubbing my arm on the place in question TRYING to get it to shock me! What kind of freak am I anyway???
And as hard as I try it dosn't seem to be shocking me on battery power. I will have my son try in the am. He seems more sensitive. Can't wait to see his face when I ask him if he will check to see if it shocks him! -

Do you have one of the 2-wire AC cords or one of the 3-wire ones on your AC adapter?
If it's 2 wire, you may have a non-polarized plug or the polarity is reversed (line vs neutral) try flipping the polarity at one end or the other & see if it persists.
If it's 3-wire, you may have improper wiring in your home causing a ground fault - get one of these to troubleshoot with.

Mnemnth,
I have used both 2 & 3 and the problem persists. I have lived in houses with bad wiring and houses with good wiring and the problem persists. The grounding and polarization here in Vanuatu is a topic to be discussed on a different forum!!! It defies logic and all laws of electrical current!!! But really this problem has ocurred every place we have ever lived so I doubt it is the house wiring. And the use of a ground fault tester like you suggested has caused days of frustration trying to fix house wiring here. Anyway as I said another discussion altogether.
And the boy says it doesn't shock him now. And I can not get it to shock me now. Maybe the lightning fixed it!!!

I suggest with all seriousness that you make it a habit to NEVER leave this laptop plugged in while everyone is away or asleep.

Electrons have a mind of their own... -
and don't put water on it right? or it may reproduce!!!
REally it is quite confusing this electrical issue. I still can't believe it handled the 19v for so long after reading all the testimonies on here. Now with the lightning strike too.... makes me nervous!!!
Seems to me something is grounding out to the frame and causing a buffer for the overcurrent issue.
Brian -
I read it somewhere that they say it never strikes the same spot twice -
