I had my toughbook apart today to fix my DC in jack on the motherboard and I was looking at the speaker while I had it apart... it seems to me like it would be pretty easy to put in a better speaker if you could get one around the right size.

Has anyone put in a better speaker? Or are new OEM speakers actually decent? Mine sounds pretty terrible but that may be just cause it's old...

I had a "hoot hoot box" when I had my CF-29... it was a mobile rugged speaker system that hooked into the aux jack outta the back.

I simply fitted 2 crappy $4 speakers into a USPS box, glued, taped and n!gger rigged the hell outta it and it was nice :)

P.S, the name origionally came from THIS. Notice how my old CF-29 is upside down! LMAO!

you might find a better one.

you might also do well to add an op amp discretely placed in hot glue next to it. they are usually a small 8 pin dip package.... Might be worth a shot. then again, the speaker is pointing downward. I find mine is quite loud when I lift it from the pillow it sits on, on my lap.

Speaker location is the main problem with the cf-29

Panasonic a few years ago changed locations to the front on the cf-30's and on the lid on the cf-19's
    Much better than underneath

Four stick on rubber feet from Rat Shack will both make your CF-29 run cooler, protect it from drops on the base and make the OEM speaker louder...

All for about two bucks. :D

D@mn, son... sometimes the unbelievably obvious solution is the best. I've been telling people to do the same thing with their desktop PCs for years; especially with all those Compaq & Dell where they have the main intake vent at the bottom front edge of the case.

The rubber feet work too. My tower has 1 inch tall ones cause there is the power supply fan and a case fan on the bottom. I went beyond that and got the aluminum stand in my 1st post and it appears to asorb some of the heat when i'm not in an air conditoned room or the room with the fan pointed at it like in the picture.

Thanks! I have alway been amazed when I see a notebook that has been designed where an air vent or intake fits flush against the desktop. The speaker is not as big a deal, but no less compromised.

And of course, air cools the heatsink base a lot better then wood.

That speaker bar would probably work well for me. I really only need the speaker when I'm watching TV when I'm in bed or on the couch... in both cases the computer sits on a pillow so taller "feet" wouldn't help at all really.

Ahh, the pillow is what does it.

A "laptop cooler pad" or big A hardback book under the TB would solve the problem for you. i find that youpor.... I mean you tube videos are quite loud when my TB is on a tv tray.

I used to have a pair of USB speakers from an ACER computer monitor; they were neat in that they were not only POWERED by the USB port, but also had a USB sound controller built-in.

No extra wires & mess, just plug in the USB, wait a minute for Windoze to install standard drivers, & BANG! Sound at about 500mW per CH through 3" drivers with 1" peizo tweets. I used them on my test bench all the time but lost them in a move.

Another thing to add to my shopping list...

    The CF 29 uses a 45mm 0.8watt 8 ohm speaker.
I see the Icom IC-M604 listing a 45mm speaker with 5watt audio output.
If that speaker can handle the extra power, it may give better sound.
Would a 4 ohm speaker increase the sound output without releasing the magic smoke?

Gotta be carefull when dealing with audio components. 4ohm should be ok, but it may shorten the life of the audio amplifier chip.

4ohm means that more of the power is going to actually drive the coil rather than being sucked up as a loss. This also means more of the power is going to go back into the amplifier chip.

It's been my experience as long as you stay at 4ohm or greater, yo'll be ok. When you get down to less, the equipment must be rated for it.

Well some speakers are more efficient then others, you might find one that takes advantage of the available power better.

This used to be a spec that you could find on speakers.

spl rating as db/meter distance. Going w/a higher rated power speaker sometimes means (not always) that they are less efficient and thus need the extra punch to make them move. I think the stocker sounds rather nice for what it is.

Try parts-express, they may have a replacement that fits nicely. To be honest I'd rather have the speaker positioned elsewhere if I were into modding the stock sound system. Obviously stereo is kind of pointless when the spread of the speakers is less than 1 foot apart.

    Greetings,
I bought a USB speaker bar for laptop use some time back, a cheapie off eBay and it works quite well on my CF-29. The bad part is it just kinda hooks on the top of the display and hangs there so it can be knocked off quite easily but the concept works very well.

And yes, I'm a newbie here with a CF-29 and a CF-51. I use a USB audio adapter into external powered speakers on the 51 also, the sound is great! ;)

    My CF-51 is a CF-51QFDEEBM and the CF-29 is a CF-29HTM50BM.

Got the 29 off eBay, bought two and made one. The 51 was at a Hamfest. A seller had a table loaded with various models and I fell in love with the 51. Had everything except the hard drive. Put a loose drive I had in the caddy and tried Windows 7. With the Dual Core T2500 and two Gigs of memory, ATI X1300 video and 1600x1200 15 inch display what more could I ask for? :p JohnP
