Is there a guide on how to disassemble a CF-74?

As the title describes, is there a guide with pictures, step by step on how to disassemble a CF-74 for a processor upgrade?

I did a quick search but didn't find any thing here.

It would stink as much as the "shocker", but I do believe I am correct. Hopefully TB knows something I don't.

 

If it's anything like the 73, which I would imagine it's pretty close design-wise, it is soldered to the board. I took one apart last weekend and it was a humdinger.

 

Yeah... You can't upgrade the processors on the Toughbooks... Any of them as far as I know.

Crap....well I will take it apart just to look.

 

First off, I just found this forum, great info here. Second, apologies to all for kind of going slightly off topic, but Toughbook seems to have the answers or at least have lots of toughbooks, so here is what I am faced with.

I have 2 CF-28's - I will have to go look up the CPU speed - but I did upgrade the ram to 512 MB. They were needed for a product display which was just a flash movie and nothing else, but we needed toughbooks or ruggedized laptops to show case the overall product we had as the laptops are part of the product. The issue is, the CF-28's wit 512 MB are too slow and the movie crawls. Can we switch mobo's or anything to keep the chassis? Is there anything else we can upgrade to get a 1 GB of RAM?

If not, where is the cheapest place that might let us trade these 28's or whatever to get the bare bones machine to meet our needs? We don't need CD-ROM, WIFI, etc. We are looking for rugged case (we like the look of the 28), daylight readable touchscreen, at least 1 GHZ cpu, 1 GB RAM, spill resistant keyboard, and wired LAN only. The keyboard isn't that critical.

Ok, again, apologies for the hijack, but this was the only topic I found talking about switching cpu's and stuff.

check out the for sale forum. I have a few cf-29s with 1.3ghz pentium M cpus on there for a low price and I can through some extra ram in there to give you 1gb.

btw the best 28 only comes with a 1ghz cpu

 

Not trying to push his units, but the price that Dan has on his 1.3's is a fairly decent one. I have been watching the prices on Ebay and while there are those 29's on there for $250-275, they are usually without HDD and caddy. By the time you find one that is seemingly a good price, you would have as much (if not more) in one after you add all the necessities. Plus, dealing with someone on this forum helps to perpetuate the species and you are more prone not to be stuck with "junk".

Not true, plenty of toughbooks have socketed CPU's though most are in the semi-rugged category. It would be worth a look into your CF-74 and you may be pleasantly surprised. Here are some models that are known to have replaceable socketed cpu's: CF-71, CF-72, CF-48, CF-50, CF-51 It should be noted that some versions of the same model had the CPU soldered in. Good luck and let us know what you find.

 

Sorry... My experience is with the rugged line. I've never looked at anything other than the CF28, 29 & 30... I like rugged.

As far as the guy who bought the 28s for movies... I think you'll need to either upgrade to a CF-29 or maybe put the movie on a DVD and play it that way? I used to play movies on my CF-28 with 512MB RAM with no issues. Of course the battery wouldn't last the whole movie but that is another story.

Your other area might be to strip out every other thing you don't need... But the video chip in there works okay at best in my opinion. You need to make sure you have the correct drivers installed as well. You could also try bumping up the ram to 768MB total.

 

He was asking about a CF-74 which is SEMI-RUGGED.

 

Like Rick said, he is mostly experienced with RUGGED, not SEMI RUGGED. Huge difference.

This thing has a million screws holding it together.

Anyway I pulled it apart and it looks like it IS soldered to the board. Sh*t.

 

How can something so wrong feel SO-O-O-O-O RIGHT?

Can I ask for that too, my CF74's screen has gone too. It was often going off calibration but has gone altogether now.

 

HI, i have run into some issues with a cf-74 mk-1
need to replace certian parts.. im lost my job recently and im just short on funds to send to heartland for repair.. i am hoping to figure out the part numbers and just have them ship it to me so i can repair it my self..

the primary issue right now is the connector cable which connects the wwan expansion module to the cf-74 ts pcb - the cable is bad.. pins are bent etc.. need a new cable... can i ask you to send me the Service Manual +schematics +board diagrams ? ive looked every where online.. i was able to find the service manual but it was for the wrong cf-74 and did not have the part number or information for the TS PCB OR THE wwan expansion connectors /wires..

id appreciate any help ..
