    Hey Guys,

I sought your expertise approximately 6 months ago in the rebuild of a cheap CF-28M purchased off ebay. And of course, with your help, I had a fully functional toughbook up and running. Last year was my senior year of college and I had finished most of my credit requirements in the fall and so I began to TA some very special classes ie Volcanology, Glacial Geology, Wildlife Management, etc. So in the last 6 months that old clunker guided every class via aftermarket internal gps (thanks again) and microsoft S&T across 37 of the 50 states including hawaii. It also allowed the students of each class to email home and talk via IM to friends and family via tethering to my phone. In that time the laptop has been sunk, snowed on, rained on countless times, and dropped 34 times (permanent marker tallies on the lid NOT my idea lol) It worked in temps ranging from -32F (Iceberg lake, GNP MT) to 94F (South Point, HI). Since I have graduated I now work for the Fish and Wildlife Service. Until recently I had been using it to perform ballistics data, and statistics data crunching. As of yesterday the laptop will no longer power on (power port worn out). Needless to say, I can't complain and I know for a fact without that gps mod several of those trips could not have happened.

Anyhoo I just wanted to share that with you guys and to thank the members that helped out. Now I guess I need to start shopping around for the next build......

Or....you could just remove and replace the power port to keep using that one, as long as that is all that is wrong.

What a great testament to the real-world toughness and utility of the CF-28 !!

If you're interested in a CF-28S Mk-3 (1 GHz) chassis to re-build for cheap, I have a few let me know.

This is one of the great example of how people appreciate of what this forum can do to help an individual to accomplished and used the modified toughbook first hand on the field.

My only regret is for those individual who are criticizing our effort and contribution to this forum but you can see unexpectedly that they(not even a member here on NBR) are the one who used a few designed and technique that came from here for their own benifits.

    Very Impressive story.
EDIT- Of course I mean about the Toughbook ...not that you found gainful employment after college. Although these days that's impressive too!
