I had the opportunity to repair a GoBook III for a local PD (board level repair) that required me to strip the machine down. Interesting to compare it with the CFs I've worked on. HDD is NOT removable or easily replaced in these, and they use two latches for the access doors - this means you can not open them with one hand. And, boy-howdy are they ugly. They use a sealed fan system for cooling, so they are not as quiet. Still, they are fully featured, have a nifty "indiglo" backlit keyboard and touchscreens.

I can post picts if anyone is interested.

EDIT: HDD is easily removed via the battery compartment (thanks db).

Sure... Just make sure they are 800X600 or less...

Yeah... They look like a mini briefcase with bumpers and a PC inside...

Are you saying the HDD is hard to get to because you have to disassemble the laptop? The HDD is accessed thru the battery compartment. Remove battery, remove caddy locking screw, slide caddy out. Not nearly as easy as a TB, but not too bad.

I'll be danged, see what you get when you do not pay attention? Fixed above. Not as pretty as a TB, but easy to remove.

I would say it might be better than a Dull.... But that would be the best compliment I could give it. But then I have never had one in my hands or apart on my bench in my shop.

    I'd pass...

Has anybody seen a Miltope Corporation laptop? They're manufactured for the US military in Hope Hull, Alabama.

From what I've read, the US military uses them for servicing weapons systems, and for other tasks.

Any one interested in purchasing some GoBook III notebooks? If so I have a dozen of them, most of them are in good working condition but without power adaptors, however they can use the same adaptor as the TB.

I am familiar with the company, but they are very low profile and if I am not mistaken they deal only with the military. According to the specs they come standard with windows 2000, other operating systems are optional. As reported above they are purpose built machines for running diagnostic tests on military hardware.

Check out the Armadillo Tablet on their web site. Pretty tough looking machine. One of their laptops is running a 15" 3-D screen on a Core-Duo 2.xx processor with Vista downgraded to XP. Not exactly an engine tuning up unit.

The laptop units that Miltope offers is available for purchase by the public. Their biggest customer just happens to be the military and Miltope caters to their specs. Their computers are tested to mil-spec standards. The 15.4" laptop is their newest design and has many great features that rival consumer laptops but still retains the ultra rugged characteristics. They are not as mainstream as say itronix or panasonic but their products can out perform the competition anyday.

No, they use a 19v 90w adapter. Some Gateway adapters will work.

Pricing is comparable to the original pricing of the CF-29 series Toughbooks.

I'd PM you, but you can not until you have a few posts under your belt.

How much are you asking for them? Backlit keyboards? Condition? With handle attached?

We might be.... But then you would have to follow the rules of the BST forum and post there.

What are they? If they are modern... You may have a few people that might want to play around with them... But if they are 266MHz models.... I'd say take them to the dump.... Or use them as a door-stop...

Where can you buy them from? Do they have a reseller, or does one contact them directly?

    GoBook III's are Pentium M 1.8. Comparable to a CF-29 Mk4-5, but with a smaller screen.

CDW sells them. Just search for Miltope on the CDW's homepage.

Ouch, here I thought some Toughbook spare parts were a bit overpriced, but this is a whole different level. $1,700 for a cable, $9,000 for a 100GB hard drive...

    Heh. That's a 100GB drive with a 2GHz processor ;)

Somebody needs to clean up the CDW database.

Ah, you are right, hidden in the specs it turns out this is a whole computer. Weird, their other notebooks are clearly marked as such right in the title.

Ok, that's better, then. Hefty, but for the military I guess it might be ok. Still, that cable is pretty bad. Maybe it comes with a main battle tank attached.

Sorry for posting in the wrong area, I just happen to see some interest in the GoBooks and then posted before seeing that there is a for sale area. I will try to put up a post tomorrow in the proper area with a little detail and perhaps a pic or two if I get a chance.

Or not, I just read the rules of posting and I need 17 more posts after this one inorder to post an FS item. Unless there is an alternative method I have to post more first. Perhaps we can talk about my CF-18's for awhile, LOL.

We use the GD8000 notebooks at work when we are out in the field. Run a VMWare server and our needed software on them.

They replaced Panasonic Toughbooks (which we have had nothing but issues with in the field)

So far we have not had them that long but they are a great piece of kit, fast, reliable and do the role we need them to do well. So far they have survived some rather hot and dusty locations and some brutish treatment too

It was cool to see what the inside of something similar looks like, wondered about that - ours a sealed and not to be tinkered with of course ;)
