I just completed the partial disassembly and reassembly of our 800MHz CF-28 and would not have attempted or successfully completed the project without the help and encouragement of Forum members.

The goal of this "invasive surgical procedure" was to upgrade from a single-connector modem panel to a dual-port modem & nic panel and to replace the modem board with a combo modem-nic board.

The whole thing went very smoothly and I learned some valuable things about the shell construction and internal layout of the CF-28 which will serve well as I go about more substantial mods to my 1g CF-28.

Thanks to all for reasonably priced parts and unreasonably generous portions of your time and knowledge here on this Forum!

I admit that I have been a little "afraid" to jump into the major changes in my 1g CF-28 so I have been gathering parts and courage and decided to start with the simpler of the two.

I also discovered that my usual tools were not up to the task then remembered some "precision" screwdrivers which handled the several tightly bound Phillips head screws with ease.

Depending on the flow of things tomorrow may be the day for my 1g CF-28; combo card, wifi, dual USB 2.0 pcmcia, and swap-out of pcmcia door (the other one has twisted hinges). Not sure if I will try to get at the USB port on the back - seems like a major disassembly project! Also need to explore the potential locations for a Bluetooth or GPS card. Definitely won't be messing with the cable up near the display - just read about Toughbook breaking them and he's been in lots of them before!

    Doc,

I broke the ribbon cable from the touchscreen that plugs into the LCD... Sort of. I broke it ONLY because I was removing the whole assembly so I could paint the screen bezel. You won't have a problem just poking around in there.

You won't have a problem! Good job!
