Ok Folks, so I purchased a used CF-30 MK2 on eBay. Turned out to have 24k hrs and a flickering/dead LCD. Found a MK1 on eBay with 1100hrs. Tried to swap using the ONLY video on YouTube that demonstrates the process from of course Mr. Silent Movie himself as a guide. As much as I enjoy the nostalgia of listening to the pseudo 80's Soundtracks on his videos, the lack of audio guidance and quick edit cut's can really cause some confusion. This dude knows whats up, but simply doesn't want to share all the secrets I think.
Furthermore just to swap out the LCD Mr. Johnson walks the viewer through a long drawn out process of damn near entirely dis-assembling the machine, when in fact all you have to do is disco the 2 LCD motherboard connectors, remove the top case screws and remove the connectors behind the LCD, it is a very simple 10 minute procedure.
FYI if swapping LCD's between a MK1 and MK2 the, "LCD Wire Harness" is different on the Motherboard end, you must re-use the harness from your, "good" machine, which makes all the more sense to only loosen the top panel screws to swap LCD's. Panel Serial numbers are the same on MK1 & MK2 1000nit TS models.

MajorDick... You should be a Major Addition to the Toughbook section. If you figured that out by yourself... Stick around.
Most would have read some of the posts and still not understood!
Good job! -
Thank you, I really nail 'em when I post drunk.
Didn't learn soon enough, my parts computer is just that. A bunch of parts, thanks to that dang video. -
Been there, done that. Try working on them while drinking... You can after you get it all down. LOL
-
On the other hand, Bob took the time to make the video. The truth is I have found some of them helpful.
But, I guess that there is always room for improvement, so I look forward to seeing your video on the subject! Let me know when you get that ready.
While I am being slightly facetious, when we ask others for free help it is hard to justify disparagement when they do their best.toughasnails and Shawn like this. -
You are absolutely right, it's pathetic that there is for all intents & purposes only one contributor on YouTube. I guess it may speak somewhat to the personality of the ToughBook owner (just saying).
Yes, I must give credit where credit is due. Not only do I appreciate the in-depth, (perhaps too much so) videos from Mr.Johnson, I can really appreciate the fact that he shaves his forearms (or is that his wife doing the work?) and again the sound tracks are unbeatable.
Fact is the dude is out to promote his company and generate work (no problem, this is still supposedly a democracy) but nevertheless I still must question his LCD Replacement video as it takes the Average Joe thru too many steps. I might just give up after watching his video and succumb to his advertisement to swap the LCD for the, "low price" of $XXX.00.
ATTN: Moderator Toughbook, If I post a, "how-to" on YouTube with my face showing, how many REP Points are you willing to give if I post the link here?
This is America, you can't expect something for nothing. -

And to jump in
to this thread, (While it's still open because I know where this thread is headed
)
The video sounds like it's aimed towards someone replacing the entire top lid assembly OR someone replacing just the LCD panel.
We have a saying in a group that I attend.."Take what you like and leave the rest" ....After watching the entire video... You did watch the entire video BEFORE you picked up a screwdriver, didn't you?..You still proceeded to disassemble the entire laptop. Didn't watching the video FIRST show you that you what you needed to do and common sense show you what you didn't need to do?
Some of the responsibility falls on the screwdriver operator NOT the teacher. I would never boil water to fry an egg. I don't care what the youtube video shows me..
.I have done many repairs while following the book or video. I always learn personal shortcuts to use the next time. It's part of the repair business. The guy that does the video or writes the book is usually not the BEST technician...If he was, he would being repairing things instead of writing books. Those videos and books are guides to help us learn how to do it ourselves..
.It sounds like BECAUSE of Bob Johnsons video, you took the chance and repaired your laptop yourself...While that took more steps than you would like...You learned how to do it and you saved hundreds of dollars...
I don't see the problem.. -
I'm speechless.Well put.
Just for the record I would have tried the repair regardless of the existence of the video, only because I am a notorious skinflint!
In reality Mr. Johnson's video's are quite informative and I am grateful that someone has taken the time to post. -
No Flames and welcome to the group. I just did not agree with you.
Perhaps it is just that many times we have folks come in, DEMAND help, are not happy with the efforts of the folks who try, and then turn around and use the information given freely by others to make a buck. Absolutely not accusing you of this.
Me, my biggest contributions here are as a researcher and a hardhead. -
My thought was that if someone takes the time to read here... They get the info they need. But not all are that patient. I used to be but not that much any more. I have to admit to scanning all the YouTube videos when I replaced the bearings in my front load washer a few weeks back. There were a lot of forums discussing it... But I needed to see what it was like.
A lot of people here either make their main living selling or repairing Toughbooks or at least part time extra income. Most if us have our own "trade secrets" that we sometimes openly and sometimes privately share. The last thing I would want to do is to compete against myself. I did that and lost.
Back in early 2007 it was just me and 1 other guy on fleabay selling custom Toughbooks. I started posting here and it attracted talent to the forum. That talent attracted others and so on... Until we have what we have today. Now look at all the "custom Toughbook sellers" on fleabay! Most of which have no idea what they are doing... Just spray painting Toughbooks to hide the wear. Most have never soldered in their life.
I've worked with Bob Johnson before and sold him parts... I have also bought parts from him back in my CF-28 days. Nice people though sometimes a bit overpriced!
*EDIT* I am not the moderator anymore, Blair is. (Toughasnails) and he is doing an awesome job! -

Hey, this is Ed from Bob Johnson's Computer stuff. Thanks for tuning in to our YouTube channel. Some of our old videos are a little less, uh, sophisticated. We are always trying to improve. I'll pass this thread over to Bob, as he'll probably want to make a new video for the LCD replacement (a "talkie").
And to answer your question RE: forearms -- Marisa (Bob's wife) makes many of the videos, as she's the repair rock star.
LCD Replacement info and youtube videos rant.
