So I was just wondering..... What if Panasonic didn't come up with the Toughbook or any tough products? How would you get by? What would you do? Break down and buy another cheap generic notebook? This thread is just for fun, I am sure you all have some great answers! Let's here them! :D

Funny that you asked this while I was getting my old Dull Inspiron 9100 ready for ebay.... ;) (In between plays of course!)

    GREAT HALFTIME SHOW!

And you thought a Toughbook was heavy? The A/C adapter for my Dull weighs as much as my CF-30!

Maybe one of Dell's 'rugged' laptops (haha). If I was in a position where I needed on I guess custom or boutique would be the only way to go.

Well, for certain, I would not be paying $200.00 for $30.00 parts. But I am used to that, I am driving a Landcruiser.

NO offense to Dell fans but their "Toughbook" is far from Panasonic's elite engineering standards. Compared to the price of a real "Toughbook" the Dell's version just isn't up to speed. If it was vastly cheaper than it would defiantly have some power in the market.

But does anyone have one of these new Dell TOughbook? I'd love to hear how they stand up to abuse we give to the Panasonics.

Yep, notice the (haha). I saw a review of one of the latest models. It held up to being run over with some cracks, but miraculously it turned on.

If Toughbooks didn't exist, I would have to be very careful... and pay attention when my laptop is under my hood.

I drove around with that thing under my hood once, pinned about 10" from my exhaust manifolds.

I was "hot wiring" the car to start it (I hadn't finished my wiring harness for the fuel injection yet), and once it was running, I was too excited to not go on a drive.

I also wouldn't get drunk and show off how tough my laptop is either.

There's actually a more modern version available, with a Pentium M 1.7GHz. Still, these things don't seem to have batteries.(?)

I can't remember where I read it but I saw something somewhere about a "Face-Off" between the Dell, Itronix, Toughbook and 1 or 2 others. ALL of them had something in the "Cons" column. All of them had multiple strikes against them except for the Toughbook which had something stupid against it like "It doesn't come in Purple" or something just as ludicrous. ALL the other "Rugged" laptops had some sort of major failure... Not the toughbook.

There are two types (For these purposes) of people who buy Toughbooks.

1.Those who buy them for the coolness factor and have no idea what's inside... They don't care because it turns on and works.

    2. Those who use them for their ruggedness and KNOW what's inside. We're usually the people who modify them also.

It never fails when I take one of these things apart I marvel at the planning that goes into just about every part. And... quite a few times I've wondered why they haven't incorporated different ideas... Some that we have done and talked about as well as other things.

Most rugged laptops. like the Itronix, seem to be regular laptops with rubber bumpers on the corners and, OH... let's take the handle off the Samsonite briefcase and stick it on the front! A few have magnesium... But none hold up like the Toughbook!
